PAVIORS IN TOUCH FEBRUARY 2021 As the year progresses and there is no sign of rugby - YET. This month we travel back to the time when Paviors changed from being Old Paviors to an ‘Open’ Club - PAVIORS. Ron Clements reflects on that time and selects his Paviors XV, as does Steve Effingham. We are reminded of the great work that is being done on the fundraising front and how current players are keeping communications going in these difficult times. WHAT CHANGED FOR PAVIORS IN 1970-71 Fortunately for me the club decided to go OPEN. Pre 1971, Paviors were Old Paviors, and they guarded their heritage with a fierce pride. In 1971, I was invited, by Paul Ward to join the new, Paviors RFC. I remember being taken up to the Carlton Hill Ground and training on a field, with grass about two feet in length. At a later, General Meeting, I handed over my cheque. It was here that Ron Rossin said, as he accepted the cheque (the first of many). He looked at my cheque and said, “I am Ron, Benson’s Ronnie, you are Ronald!” As my family always call me Ronald, I was happy to join the Pavior Family. Neil has asked for some memories Club colours were green jersey with one red band, navy shorts, and green stockings topped with red. Things have changed! From Carlton, the club moved to the High Pavement School, then later to Burnstump, thanks to Ron Rossin. In the early 1970’s I cannot remember any ‘open’ member in the Paviors first XV, they were that strong. Players who arrived after 1971 were: Rod O Brian, Ian Reynolds, Paul Majewski, Phil Molyneux, Chris Eggleshaw (all Old Paviors). Clive Rossin, Michael Latter, and Clive Whitworth were not old boys, but they soon proved their worth. Clive Whitworth was the first non - Old Pavior to gain a first XV position. He jumped at No2 and he must have had spring heels the height he gained. I first met Old Paviors at the Oxford Sevens, in the late 50’s early 60’s. They reached the Plate final and played Rosslyn Park. The Park had two international players in their seven, but the ground was cheering the O.P’s winger, who was quite speedy. I believe it was Lance Wright. (John Elliot will be able to correct me.) John Elliot, called me Robin for many years, and when I said, ‘My name is Ronald, or Ron’, his comment was, ‘I am not changing now’. I wonder if Mel Sudbury can recall the 3rd XV game at Derby. Ron Rossin was playing scrum half; Ron Benson was open side and they put me at blind side. RR picked up the ball at the base and went, we all went with him. He then wound himself up and sold the most outlandish and slow-motion dummy I have ever seen. The Derby pack bought it.
We have all been bought a drink by the opposition, however, the best one I remember was the skipper of Syston Vets, coming up to Paul Ward and filling his glass, with the comment, ‘’You were alongside our stand-off so much during the game, I assumed you were one of my team.” To the old, Old Paviors. Remember Kesteven in January?? Joe Cast and I came off the field absolutely blue. We experienced rain, sleet, snow, sunshine, and a gale all in 80 minutes. With one cotton shirt. Ron Rossin was not very sympathetic to injury. We were on The Red/Green barrel pitch, a very young Clive Rossin was in the XV. He got caught in a heavy tackle and landed heavily. He complained that his leg ached or hurt. Dad said ‘’run it off’’. He limped about, but he was obviously in pain. Joe Cast, John Ludlum, and I, suggested he should go off. The diagnosis later that weekend was a broken leg. I had to stop playing because of a spinal injury. I took up the whistle, and ruined many players Saturday afternoons, but even then Paviors gave me some very good memories. A cup game, Nottingham’s ground at Ireland Avenue, Beeston. Paviors scored a good try, when suddenly, I believe it was led by Rod O’Brian, the whole shed erupted, not into cheering, but into their school hymn. Mel Sudbury’s Drop Goal from near the half-way. The London Welsh game. The good memories are there. From your first open member, Robin to John, and Ronald to R.S.R. THANK YOU PAVIORS! Ron to those who know me. Floreat Paviors. RONALD CLEMENTS - My Paviors XV From those I have met: LHP: Ron Rossin: anyone who could hold their own against the infamous COVENTRY, and Warwickshire, front three of, Godwin, Judd, and Maclean, all internationals, gets my vote. Hooker: John Elliot Leicester, Captain of Nottingham, led them to their most successful season ever, and a Barbarian. Reserve would be the young Wheeldon. THP: Must be young Paul Majewski. he played against Public School Wanderers at Trent College. Powell of Northampton told us,” the finest technical prop he had encountered”. His size stopped him going up the highest ladders. SR: Clive Whitworth, Best No2 ,I have seen outside first-class clubs.
SR: Roger Street, A gentle giant. Reserve Howard Walker, (or H as he is commonly known). He also played on the flank. Back Row: Openside: Paul Ward, any player who can play the offside line as he did , year in and year out, and not be pinged off the park, has to be there. The refs included Don Jones, Brian Head-Rapson, and David Williams. NO8 John Pallant, if your country caps you, then you make the XV. Reserve Steve Forrester, only the Oldies will recall him BSWF: Phil Molyneux. Should have gone to Nottingham, or Leicester, in my opinion, to further his playing career. Their loss was our gain. Scrum Half: Probably Peter Aldwinkle Outside half: Terry Lee: he played when the kicking stand off was supreme. Danny Graney for a running player. Centres: Roger Moakes, Trevor Mantle, and young Dave Sneath. All three could come off either foot, and they could really accelerate. Wings: for me it has to be Lance Wright, the first Pavior to show the Oxford crowds that he would run at anything. Ian Reynolds : Sorry Ian ! I am choosing you for your strong running. If they did not hit you, you went on. No sidestep, pure power. Full Back: Mick Latter, excellent under the high ball, and a lovely boot to ball technique. Running full-back: and knowing when to join an attacking line, Patrick Billam. But my BEST TEAM has to be the team that beat Durham City, and then played London Welsh in The John Player Cup. They worked for each other, and they jelled as a team. STEVE EFFINGHAM’S SELECTION XV 15 C. Ball 14 P Bastow 13 S Brace 12 G Oliver 11 S Effingham

MARTIN ‘BUTCH' STINCHCOMBE It is with some regret that the club has learned of the recent death of Martin 'Butch' Stinchcombe a school friend and acquaintance of many ex-players. A former player, Butch played centre for the club in the era before we moved to Burntstump. At school he played back-row forward. A ferocious tackler who often would throw the ball to his opponents in order to try to smash them!! 'Butch' hailed from a sporting family- his father Archie won an Olympic Gold Ice- Hockey medal in 1936,and was later Coach of the highly successful Nottingham Panthers Ice Hockey team of the 1950's.His mother Gwen was a successful skater, a one-time rival to, and friend of, the great Norwegian skater and film-star Sonja Henie. The family opened a sports shop, 'Mercury Sports' on Alfreton Road and many ex-players will recall getting 10% discount when they bought sports equipment there! 'Butch' went on to become a highly successful Chemical Engineer in Birmingham before returning to the area, to live in Papplewick. He was still in contact with several fellow ex-players until the time of his death. Our sympathies and thoughts are with his family.
PAVS POD On July 11th, 2020, we (Tom ‘Goat’ Ryan and Phil ‘Eggy’ Eggleshaw) released the first ever episode of the ‘Pavs Pod’ podcast. Interviewing First Team Captain, Doug Billam. Now, every Saturday at around midday, the Podcast is uploaded onto YouTube, Spotify, Apple, Google Podcast etc. The listenership is no longer just friends of Paviors, but due to recent guests such as former Glasgow Warriors prop Stuart Corsar, and Saracens winger Alex Lewington, we have listeners from around the country (and a few splattered across the world!). We hope it will only continue to grow with some exciting episodes coming up, and the possibility of some live ‘ticketed events’! The podcast has become a great way to draw attention to our club, while keeping listeners engaged in grassroots rugby. Regardless of the guest, we guide them through a journey to reminisce about the playing career, which in turn encourages others to do the same. As much as this is a podcast hosted by two Paviors player, it is a platform that (tries) to increase and maintain people’s enthusiasm for the sport, regardless of club. The podcast is no longer a notice board for Paviors, but hopefully plays a part in encouraging players to return to playing (regardless of club) when we eventually get through these uncertain times! (Also, we really enjoy what we do!). Hopefully see you all soon(ish) at the Stump! Stay Safe,
