Shabbat Dinner A COMMUNITY CELEBRATION June 2, 2023 HONORING Jennifer Dubrow Weiss 10 Years as CEO
Jen, June 2, 2023 Words do not properly express or do justice to how we all feel about what you have accomplished. Quite literally, you worked your way up from the bottom, starting as a student intern, becoming a full-time social worker, then Executive Director of JFCS, and, finally, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey. For the last decade, really, for the last thirty years, you have helped improve the lives of innumerable people here and abroad and enriched those who have worked and volunteered with you. You have been and continue to be a role model not only for your daughters, but also young women and men everywhere. As evidenced by the accolades you have received and the respect garnered throughout your career from other Jewish community service professionals, industry leaders, and government officials, you have raised the bar for how to do not just your job, but any job. If all you had done was become CEO and kept Federation on an even keel, dayenu. If you had only built Weinberg Commons, dayenu. If you had just started Aleph, flown to Ukraine, helped our community get through COVID, or become a “rockstar” in your field... You have traveled a path laid out by your parents and theirs before them on a journey that is not, by any means, complete. What you will accomplish in the future is limited only by your imagination and we can only wonder and watch what that will be. You inspire us all and have made the world a better place. We could not be more proud of you. Congratulations! We love you. Jim, llana & Emma Linda & Josh Rande Rachel, Kevin, Erin & Zach Andy, Rebecca, Emily & Alison
“The meaning of the Sabbath is to celebrate time rather than space. Six days a week we live under the tyranny of things of space; on the Sabbath we try to become attuned to holiness in time. It is a day on which we are called upon to share in what is eternal in time, to turn from the results of creation to the mystery of creation, from the world of creation to the creation of the world.” -Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel Shabbat Shalom Your support and participation at tonight’s Shabbat Dinner – A Community Celebration helped raise dollars for endowment funds specifically built for the older adults and special needs communities.
A Message From President Ed Rivkin The Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey’s (JFSNJ) rich history spans over 100 years; an incredible accomplishment for our community. What began with 29 local leaders, whose mission was to make a difference in the lives of others, was the spark that inspires us. Since then, JFSNJ has evolved into a household name with programs and services designed to support so many in South Jersey, Israel, and around the world. In particular, these last 10 years, led by our CEO, Jennifer Dubrow Weiss, have been transformational. Jen’s understanding for the needs of our community and her vision and passion for how to achieve success have not only kept that spark alive, but also ignited it in new and impactful ways. We are extremely fortunate to have her to lead us through the last decade’s triumphs and challenges. We’ve seen so much transpire in the last decade - from the establishment of cornerstone offerings including Aleph Home Care, the Aleph Adult Day Care, Weinberg Commons and JFed Security, LLC - all of which were driven by Jen’s keen strategic visioning. We’ve also weathered difficult times - navigating the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve watched how the true spirit of our dynamic community has rallied to support each other during these challenges. A great leader recognizes how to rally those around them to deliver during the good and the tough times, and Jen has shown us that strength that perhaps we didn’t know we had in ourselves. Jen is a believer in the big picture and that includes the Federation and agency staff, lay leaders, volunteers, donors, clergy, program participants and beyond. Each and every one of us are a thread woven into the tapestry that makes the beautiful, blended, one-of-a-kind piece that makes Jewish South Jersey so special. Thank you Jen for this incredible journey you’ve taken us on. We are so proud of all that’s been accomplished in the past decade with you as our fearless leader of the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey and our family of agencies. You have encouraged us to take risks, celebrate successes, learn from our losses and look for ways, both big and small, to make a difference. We are looking forward to reaching new heights with you in the next 10 years and beyond. As a community, may we go from strength to strength. I look forward to experiencing the journey with you all. Ed
A Message From CEO Jennifer Dubrow Weiss Dear friends, It is truly surreal to acknowledge that 10 years has passed since I began this journey with the Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey. I am so humbled and grateful to be celebrating tonight with you all, just as I am every day of these past 10 years. There is nothing more important to me than recognizing each and every one of you who have been a part of the decade-long journey thus far. I have learned that a true leader is someone who is shepherded by those who came before, learns from their successes and failures, and builds upon them. Today and every day, I am called to lead by example and through the gift of life lessons my parents, Ellen and Ron, taught me. My mom encouraged me to find the varying strengths in each and every person and bring out the best in them, whether they can currently or still have yet to see it in themselves. My dad had the incredible quality to understand all the viewpoints of everyone with a seat at the table, then find a way to bring all those views together. Their combined love of philanthropy and helping others in the community are my driving force as we work together to make the South Jersey Jewish community better than the day before. Family is at the heart of it all for me, and there are not enough words to fully express my deep love for them. To Jim, Ilana and Emma, “thank you” will never be enough. You are the reason for it all and I’m so thankful you are mine! Thank you for your sacrifice and understanding, always. Thank you to all of you who played a special role in making this Shabbat Dinner so special. I am so touched to have so many friends involved in ensuring this is a memorable evening for everyone - your friendships keep my life so vibrant and joyful and I thank you for being with me through all of life’s ups and downs. I couldn’t and wouldn’t be me without you all! As we look to the future, the next 10 years and beyond, may we continue to dream big together. Let’s build on our strengths and find new ways to solve challenges. We will aim high and achieve our goals, because there’s no alternative when we work to meet the needs of those in our community, in Israel and around the world. I am so incredibly blessed to work with such talented and dedicated people - thank you to our past Presidents, board members, committee members and the most unbelievable staff. You have taught me so much, have been my teammates along the way and are the real reason for our success. On Shabbat, we pause and give thanks for all that we have. We slow down, take a moment to be aware, to breathe and just be present in the moment. I am so thankful to be here and present with all of you. Shabbat Shalom! With all my love and gratitude, Jen
