SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin-683106 PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SCHOOL STUDENTS UNDER ROSHNI PROJECT IN ERNAKULAM DISTRICT Introduction In the educational world inclusion has become a major movement in the 21st century. Inclusive education can reinforce the idea of social justice in education. It is essential to recognise the diverse needs of learners and address those needs through appropriate educational provisions in order to include marginalised learners in the educational process. In this way, inclusion has emerged as an ideology for looking after the needs of all children according to their level of ability irrespective of age, sex, religion, ethnicity and socio- economic or disability background. Therefore, this has become increasingly a process of awareness to be able to meet the diverse needs of children . Project Roshni by Ernakulam District Administration is an honest step towards being inclusive in education. ROSHNI project aims at the educational development of migrant workers’ children in Ernakulum District. The project is implemented in 20 selected schools across the district. Roshni Volunteers assist migrant students in acquiring proficiency in Malayalam, English and Hindi using the strategy of code-switching through special packages. Code-switching is the main pedagogical tool used in ROSHNI. Code-switching occurs when a speaker alternates between two or more languages, in the context of a single conversation. The technique is such that their mother tongue and the targeted language (Malayalam/ English/ Hindi) are mixed in a particular way which gives children a way to experiential learning. It has been proved that code-switching can scientifically take care of more than one language. The Roshni teacher interacts with the students and gets them to produce sentences on their own either in Malayalam or in their mother tongue, whichever they were comfortable with. The teacher megaphones and then codes it into Malayalam. Then she writes sentences on the board by uttering it syllabically. The child reads it graphically. The class progresses with the same process and it helps the learners to develop a phonemic consciousness and gives them an understanding of the graphical representation of each phoneme. And this graphic reading is crucial for making a connection between the sound and the orthographic 1

At the end of the academic year 2018-19 once again the Project was assessed and a performance analysis was held with the data was collected from the schools all the 20 schools where this project is being implemented so far. 2

Native State and Attitude towards studies Roshni aims at helping the students from the migrant families and it had the major challenge in getting the students attend these extra sessions before the regular class hours . The challenge has two factors , one is to understand the students keenness in learning and two is to get the parents send these children regularly to these sessions. The data collected to understand the trend was analysed in the following way : A. Student’s Attitude towards Studies It can be seen from Table 1.a that students belonging to West Bengal have a problem in their attitude towards education. 63% of the students who don’t like studies belong to West Bengal. On the other hand children from Bihar , Jharkhand and TamilNadu show 5
SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin-683106 their liking towards education . This again needs further exploration as there can be more contributing factors to this. And this is very evident from the success of Roshni project in general . As in most of the cases earlier the children of migrant labourer’s were never reaching schools due to lack of interest by their parents but now there is a sea change in the scenario with these labourer parents showing keenness in their ward’s studies and that has definitely helped a project like Roshni. 6. Occupation of Parents Table 3 shows that a lot of the parents work as coolie (98), then there are labourers , shoe makers, workers in plywood industries , hotels and gardeners while some are into business likes selling clothes, tools , home appliances, mehendi cones, food stalls etc. Table 3: Parent’s Occupation Occupation Frequency % Valid % Cumulative % .2 Valid 1 .2 .2 .5 .6 AutoDriver 2 .3 .3 Automobile Business 1.7 Bag Maker 1 .2 .2 2.2 Battery Godown 10.4 Business 7 1.1 1.1 10.6 Car mechanic 11.2 Carpenter 3 .5 .5 12.0 Catering 52 8.2 8.2 1 .2 .2 4 .6 .6 5 .8 .8 7

Student movements during the academic year 2018-19 In the study of Roshni in the year 2017-18 students who were present during the first half of the year were missing in the second half and similarly new students were joining in in the middle of the year . This movement had some negative impact on the overall effectiveness of the program due to lack of continuity. To see the movement this year too the data was 9
SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin-683106 collected and tabulated as given Table 4 below. The data indicates that this year the movement among the students was minimal overall and none in most of the Schools. GLPS Malayidamithurth being the most effected school and the reason for the student leaving was mostly due to parent loosing the job due to Kerala floods. GUPS Kandanthara and GUPS North Vazhakulam recorded re-joining of some students. This trend is again can be seen as a positive for the project like Roshni . SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin-683106 Learning Assessments of Roshni Students 1. Status of students prior to Roshni The Roshni Project has been running for the last two year and in this second year the project it has been running in 20 schools in the Ernakulam District . To assess the student’s learning clearly the data was collected twice in the year , once in the beginning of the academic year and then at the end of the year. The data indicated that prior to Roshni the students were not very proficient in Malayalam Language with the following status . A. Speak Malayalam Table 5 a : Prior to Roshni Malayalam Proficiency – Speaking Frequency % Valid % Cumulative % Valid No 186 28.0 28.0 28.0 Yes 485 72.0 72.0 100.0 Total 671 100.0 100.0 72% students could speak Malayalam prior to Roshni . 11

AGE WISE ANALYSIS OF MALAYALAM PROFICIENCY Roshni aims at Lower Primary and Upper Primary mainly , but there students from ages 5 - 15 . To check the proficiency in Malayalam language an analysis of their language proficiency recorded was tabulated age wise. 2.A. Age Vs. Proficiency in speaking Malayalam Cross tabulation was done to check the proficiency in speaking Malayalam age wise. The row wise percentage analysis is used for interpretation. The following table shows the results. The students age ranged from 5 years to 15 years. Table 6a : Age Vs. Which indicates that children with age the proficiency in speaking another language is showing improvements . The factors can be many but 13
SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin-683106 Roshni’s initiatives are definitely a major contributor for sure as most of the children between the age 10-15 were part of Roshni for more than 10 months. 2.B. Age Vs. Proficiency in reading Malayalam Table 6 b : Age Vs. Proficiency in reading Malayalam Read Malayalam Yes No Total Age 5-9 years Count 148 271 421 % 35.2% 64.4% 100.0% 10-12 Years Count % 107 111 218 13-15 years Count 49.1% 50.9% 100.0% % 13 18 31 41.9% 58.1% 100.0% It is evident from the table that the mostly more than half of students in all the age groups are not proficient in reading Malayalam. 64% within 5-9 years, 51% within 10- 12 years and 58% within 13-15 years are the percentage of students who are not proficient in reading Malayalam. Atleast 35 to 40 % of those who could speak Malayalam in all the age categories were found to be able to read Malayalam. 2.C. Age Vs. Proficiency in writing Malayalam From the table 6 c it can be seen that 62% within 5-10 years, 51% within 10-12 years and 61% within 13-15 years are not proficient in writing Malayalam. Table 6 c : Age Vs. Proficiency in writing Malayalam Write Malayalam Yes No Total Age 5-9 years Count 158 262 421 % 37.5% 62.2% 100.0% 10-12 Years Count % 106 112 218 13-15 years Count 48.6% 51.4% 100.0% % 12 19 31 38.7% 61.3% 100.0% 14
SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin-683106 From tables 6.a,6.b and 6.c, it can be inferred that though the students are able to speak Malayalam, they are not as proficient in reading and writing Malayalam. The children in the age group 10-12 years indicate better proficiency in Malayalam language than 5-9 years as well as 13-15 years . The factors contributing to this needs further exploration though. 3. English Proficiency among the students – PRETEST & POST TEST GRADES - LP Section Proficiency in the English Language was measured for the Roshni students by collecting the data abut their performance just at the beginning of the English Sessions and then post (by the end of academic year) the sessions . 3.A. Writing The English writing test shows that pre Roshni the students were lacking in English writing skills as the majority of them were getting C , D and E grades and very few were getting A and B. The same kids when given training in English were found to be scoring much better with the majority in LP Section scoring A, B and C grades and major drop in D and E grades were observed. 200 English Grades - Writing Pretest 180 Posttest 160 BCDE 140 120 100 80 60 40 20 0 A 15

SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin-683106 Analysis of Annual exam grades Roshni project started early during the academic year and the volunteers trained the students to improve their proficiency in both languages- Malayalam & English. The previous section shows the effectiveness of Roshni by the change in the performance in pre assessments and post assessments. Further the performance of these students in Malayalam and English in their term end exams is also analysed. The following graphs shows the performance of the students school wise. 1. The grades in the annual exams on the other side shows that the grades have improved considerably. The number of students scoring grades A & B have increased while the number of students scoring grade E has reduced to zero. This shows the effectiveness of Roshni as the students are performing well in their term exams also. Conclusion As mentioned earlier the ROSHNI project has their volunteers training the students using Code Switching Techniques to increase their proficiency in Malayalam and English. The project also provides breakfast for these students. The results of the analysis clearly support the success of the implementation of the project. The proficiency of the students in handling Malayalam- reading, writing, speaking and understanding has increased considerably. Similarly , in the case of English also , students under the Roshni project show considerable 22
SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin-683106 improvement in reading, writing and Speaking in English. This has reflected in their performance in the terminal exams too. The attendance of these students is seen to be high and stable another indicator of the success of the ROSHNI as it has been proven that students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. Roshni in its second year clearly indicates positive results overall, as this can be considered as project which can be termed as one off implementation in State towards being inclusive. The Parents’ attitude towards studies and support to bring them regularly to School is a clear indication of acceptance of the project and understanding the value that it is adding to their lives. 23
SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin-683106 APPENDIX The appendix shows the mid-term performance analysis of students under the ROSHNI project 24
SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin- 683106 PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SCHOOL STUDENTS UNDER ROSHNI PROJECT IN ERNAKULAM Introduction ROSHNI project aims at the educational development of migrant workers’ children in Ernakulum District. The project is implemented in 20 selected schools across the district. For the performance analysis, data was collected from the above mentioned 20 schools. To measure the performance, two sets of data were collected- one at the start of the academic year before implementing the project at the schools and second after 6 months of implementing the program. The data was taken as two sets- one from LP section and second from UP section. The proficiency was categorised as two- complete and partial. Further, the BMI (Body Mass Index) was also calculated before and after implementing the program since project included providing breakfast to these children. Flow of analysis The analysis is divided into two parts- Part 1 compares the proficiency, and BMI before implementing Roshni and after implementation taking a span of 6 months. Part 2 takes the terminal exam into consideration and compares the performance of the students thus ascertaining the success of the Roshni program in improving their academic performance.
SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin- 683106 Analysis Part 1: The proficiency of the students are compared with before implementing the program and after implementing the program taking a span of 6 months. The proficiency is measured as partial proficiency and complete proficiency for both LP & UP schools. Further the BMI is compared. SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin- 683106 The mean attendance of students in 20 schools is 85.9%. It is evident from the chart that all the schools have a good percentage attendance. This can be attributed to the classes as well as the breakfast provided. Further, the proficiency can also be seen to be increased due to this stable attendance. Part 2: Analysing the academic performance in the terminal exam ROSHNI project educated the students off the class hours. The objective of the program is to make at par the students of this program with the rest of their classmate, by improving their proficiency in Malayalam language as the medium of instruction is Malayalam in these schools. Hence, the analysis of the performance of these students in their terminal exams becomes mandatory to measure the success of the project. The performance of these students in the terminal exams are taken and consolidated for this purpose. For analysis, the two sections LP & UP are handled separately. Section A shows the analysis of LP schools and Section B shows that of UP schools SECTION A - LP Section ROSHNI: Pretest June-July 2018 and Terminal Exam Dec 2018 Grade Consolidation Performance ABCD Pretest - LP (% of students who scored the grade) 5.18 18.32 22.26 54.12 Terminal Examination - LP (% of students who scored the grade) 26.10 39.56 20.41 13.90 Table 1: Grade consolidation of LP section
SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin- 683106 Figure 5: Grade consolidation – pre-test and terminal exam Major improvement shown in the grades A and D , as the students who were scoring D grades have drastically dropped from 54 % to 14 % whereas as it can be seen with A grade scoring pattern has improved from meagre 5 % to 26 % . There is almost 50% increase in the performance of students scoring B grade, though students scoring grade C the change is not substantial. On a school wise performance analysis of the School under the ROSHNI Project we find the following trends depicted in graphs below. The figures below denotes separately the grades A, B, C & D scored by students

SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin- 683106 Figure 8: Consolidation of Grade C across the schools Figure 9: Consolidation of Grade D across the schools From figures 6, 7, 8 & 9 it can be seen that the percentage of students scoring grades A& B have increased in the terminal exam when compared with that of pretest and the percentage of students scoring Grades C& D have come down. This can be attributed to the success of the implementation of ROSHNI

SCMS GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS Prathap Nagar, Muttom, Cochin- 683106 Conclusion As mentioned earlier the ROSHNI project has their volunteers training the students using Code Switching Techniques to increase their proficiency in Malayalam. The project also provides breakfast for these students. The results of the analysis clearly supports the success of the implementation of the project. The proficiency of the students in handling Malayalam- reading, writing, speaking and understanding has increased considerably. This has reflected in their performance in the terminal exams too. The attendance of these students is seen to be high and stable another indicator of the success of the ROSHNI as it has been proven that students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently.
