The Sydney Harbour Bridge The Sydney Harbour Bridge is located in the Sydney Harbour in New South Wales. It is one of the most famous bridges in the world. It is one of Australia’s most famous landmarks.

History of the Sydney Harbour Bridge For a long time, the people of Sydney needed a bridge to connect the northern and southern shores of the Sydney Harbour. In 1922, the New South Wales government began accepting designs of a possible bridge. The bridge they chose was designed by Dr John Bradfield.

Building the Sydney Harbour Bridge The Sydney Harbour Bridge is made of steel. Steel is a difficult material to use. When steel gets hot, it expands (gets bigger) and when it gets cold, it contracts (gets smaller). This can be a problem in Sydney because the summers are hot and the winters are cold. The engineers made special latches so the steel can move.

Building the Sydney Harbour Bridge Building the bridge began in 1925. They started on both the south and north sides at the same time. It took five years to build the bridge to make it meet in the middle! The road and platforms were built in 1931. In 1932, it was completed and officially opened.

Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge In 1998, the Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened to climbers. It is now very popular for people to climb. People wear a special jumpsuit and harness for safety.

Purpose of the Sydney Harbour Bridge The Sydney Harbour Bridge is a very busy highway that many people use every day. It is often used for events throughout the year. The most popular event is the New Year’s Eve fireworks. Many thousands of fireworks are set off from the bridge.
