Koh Kret Pottery Koh Kret pottery, one of Thailand’s Geographical indication handicrafts, or GI possess a long history of uniqueness. Koh Kret Pottery is a non-coated traditional pottery produced in Nonthaburi Province. Its unique locality features are the processing, the exquisite carvings and perforated framework performs by the hand of local specialists. It is produced in Nonthaburi Province, Central Thailand.

Koh Kret is an island in the lower Chaopraya river which is a part of Partkret district in Nonthaburi province. Partkret district

Majority of its population inherited from Mon ethnic group who mainly make pottery for living.

History Our terracotta pottery has been passed on for more than 200 years when our ancestors settled in this area in 1774 A.D. Once we finished our pottery production we rowed along the rivers to sell them the central area. Another Mon settlement at Sam kok, Pathumtani province often came directly to buy our potteries. They transported our goods on boats and sold them all over the region. The pottery were accepted.

Process Making Kohkret Pottery ➢ Kohkret Pottery production process begins with earthen clay dug from central plain of Thailand, and separated all the pebbles, silts and organic matters. ➢ To increase the viscidity of the clay, the clay is dewatered prior to shaping on a spinning wheel.

➢ The resulting clay is then air dried before being engraved. ➢ The potter will put the engraved wares into kilns at suitable temperature. ➢ The resulting wares are truly distinctive of Kohkret.

“Kohkret Pottery” is registered as Geographical Indication, where it is defined as follow. “Kohkret Pottery” refers to unglazed earthenware made in Pakkred district, Nonthaburi province. Its outstanding characteristics consist of its traditional method of production, and delicate engraving style.

Its had been symbolized as Nonthaburi province emblem, a terracotta water pot with decorative motif that includes pottery lid, pottery body, and pottery stand.

Kohkret is a famous tourist attraction located in Nonthaburi province where traditional Mon culture has been well preserved, where traditional Mon culture has been well preserved.

Variety of pottery styles have been developed to reflect demands of people. All of which have generated income for Kohkret people.

Kohkret Pottery is a geographical indication of Thailand, an exceptional art with traditional value which will be kept and passed on for generations to come.
