Ghost earned five nominations at the 63rd Academy Awards • Misery – It is a physiological thriller film based on Stephen King’s novel. It is about an obsessive fan who holds an author captive and forces him write a story. Bates the Academy Award for Best Actress at the 63rd Academy Awards for her performance in this film. It is the only Stephen King’s novel to win an Oscar. • Goodfellas – It is a biographical crime film. It is a film adaptation of the 1985 nonfiction book Wiseguy by Pileggi. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards. The film won five awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Tv Shows • Cheers (Season 9) - Though it experienced early low ratings, the show became a part of mainstream culture. Follows a crime (usually a murder), usually adapted from current headlines, from two separate points, the police investigation and the prosecution in court.

Literature • The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan – published January 15, 1990. First book of the fantasy series The Wheel of Time. This books tells the story of a mysterious nineteen-year-old boy Rand’ al Thor. • The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan – Published November 15, 1990. Second book of the fantasy series The Wheel of Time. Based on a quest to retrieve the Horn of Valera. • Four Past Midnight by Stephen King – Published August 1990. It is a heart-stopping horror novel. Second book of the series, first was Different Seasons. • Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch by Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman – It is a horror comedy about the birth of the son of Satan and the coming of the end times.

Person of the Year • Person of the year goes to George H.W. Bush for his efficient ways of dealing with foreign and domestic policies. After Iraq invaded Kuwait, George Bush convinced the president of Saudi Arabia to increase the United States troops so that they can protect Saudi Arabia from Iraq’s invasion. George Bush forced Iraq’s army out of Kuwait without directly involving in a war that could have caused a high number of causalities. He signed a treaty with Mikhail Gorbachev, Soviet Union’s president to halt the production of nuclear weapons. Even though in his election campaign, George Bush said that he will not raise taxes, he did but it for the sake of United States economy as the national debt was tripled.

Symbol of the Year • In the year 1990, there were many technological advancements, the main being the development of the World Wide Web (WWW) which was created by Tim Berners Lee. This was significant as now the internet was open to public, and it became much easier to access information and share it. • NASA also launched the Hubble Space telescope; it was the largest and most versatile tool for research. • Also, in the 1990, Microsoft releases Windows 3.0, which had new graphical user interface as now the applications were available as clickable icons rather than as a list of file names.
