This month in Central Park lots of our plants had beautiful names as well as some unusual characteristics. For example, rewarewa can grow up to 28 metres and were favoured for their reddish-flecked wood. Māori used them for palisade walls and river posts but apparently, they’re rubbish for burning and have the nickname of the ‘bucket of water tree.’ The orchid-like flowers of kohekohe spring right out of the trunk, and the fruit (that look a bit like figs) take almost a year to develop. Kohekohe were also one of the first specimens taken by botanists aboard the Endeavour, and in Rongoa – kohekohe leaves are used to treat hormonal imbalance. BROOKLYN ORCHARD OCTOBER IN THE ORCHARD After a wet winter, the orchard is now showing signs of spring. Our Hawera plum is in blossom and the pears are in bud.You can feel the promise of new growth and warmer days.We have been very lucky to spring some extra funds fromWCC,The Vogelmorn Foundation, and the Resource Centre Trust, which has enabled us to build some much needed steps and garden borders. We are hoping this will make it a safer trip through the orchard. We have also been given a fridge that will soon become a library of seeds and gardening books, another reason to visit the orchard. And, if you needed another reason, we have weekly working bees on Monday nights from 5.30pm. Everyone is welcome. Please join us, the orchard is a community space we can all enjoy and contribute to. We are also running a workshop later in the month to help inspire you to grow your own kai, see details on the poster. This workshop is timed for our soil warming up and knowing what to plant in Brooklyn. 12 OCTOBER 2022 BROOKLYN TATTLER
