“Looping A Performer Through A Tempo” In a “House Of Ranked Fishy Escapade” DN 1962 Studio Geralyn Toh 192902Z The Villagers & Their Dwelling

My persona is a skillful Fishmonger who owns a store in Tekka Centre Market for more than 30 years. My magic sentence is looping a performer through a tempo. The keywords are looping, performer and tempo. Looping is derived from my mapping of the \"subservient performer's\" looping movement when collecting fish to be brought to the back before being scaled, de-gutted and filleted. The word performer is derived from his \"act\" which is his skillful demonstration of preparing fishes in front of a public audience. The word tempo is derived from my mapping of the categories of fishes sold and the everchanging wave-like form created by the sales of the various categories. The form for my \"House Of Ranked Fishy Escapade\" was directly inspired by the constantly changing form created by the \"tempo\" as well as the mechanism of a weighing machine. At the start of the day, all tanks will be filled to the same height with live fishes. During the day when transactions are made, the form will slowly rise upwards. This will then show the popularity of the fishes by its ranks as well as create an intriguing every-changing netted playground overflowing with merriment within its architecture.

ENTERTAINMENT: Popularity Stands END OF THE DAY/CLOSING (no more fishes) Similarly to a weighing scale, the more the weight of the MIDDLE OF THE DAY(Rankings can be seen by the height difference) item placed on the weighing scale, the more the height of it decreases. This same concept is being used in this building. When a certain category of fishes is being bought more than the others, it will weigh less and will rise up, towering over the others just like a ranking system. Showing the popularity between the types of fishes being sold. Being located at 1 of the points at a cross junction, it can be seen from afar as well giving the viewer a clearer depiction of the popularity of a certain category of fish. It can act as a basic gauge of time for the other stores near it as the ranking of the fishes can depict when it is peak hours or when it is closing (usually 6pm like other stores nearby)

REST/SLEEP AND ENTERTAIN: Moving Netted Playground The netted playground is very stretchy, tied onto columns as well as the moving exterior of the house. When fish is sold and the architecture rises, the net will morphe to account for the change in height. In turn making its shape unpredictable. It is not only fun to play on, it is also very comfortable. Doubling up as a rest area, allowing the “subservient performer” to sleep or take a break.

EAT: Dried Seafood Facade On the exterior facade of the western facade of the building, seafood is hung to dry on the sides of the “netted playground”. The sun from the western facade is very hot and will shine directly at it from the morning till the afternoon at around 3 pm. Giving it enough time

ENTERTAINMENT: Fish Cannon The fish cannons are located on the x-structures of the building. This helps to send fishes ordered from up and down the building, transporting fish to the “subservient performer” to descale and fillet or transporting it to the buyers. The allow help to load the fish in the tanks at the start of the day.

ENTERTAINMENT: Tunnel Walkway The ground floor of the building is open for visitors to walk through. It is 3m tall when the store is opened, however when the store is closed, it will collapse to prevent people from entering after working hours. At the top of the building, there are fish tanks made from glass on all sides, even the bottom. When sunlight shines through, the patterns of the fish will be seen in its shadow. When visitors walk through the building, they can look up and see the fishes, creating a fun illusion of being underwater and swimming with the fishes.

PERFORMANCE (TEMPO)

Study Model 1: Patterns in gutting, cleaning and filleting a fish. The orange foam pieces symbolise the cuts made in the fish.

Study Model 2: Scale 1:200 Stacking of the furniture, order of the placement of fish and their heights, as well as his “self-made stepping platform”

Study Model 3: Relationship between the “subservient performer” and the choreographer. The “instrument” made from white foam acts as a command station, when a command is shouted, the corresponding block will be lifted. The curved ramp made from metal straws, old toys and thin plastic tubing acts as the path of the “subservient performer”. When the block from the instrument is lifted, a ball bearing will be lifted by the elevator, rolling down the ramp, through the block and back to the elevator via the bottom ramp.

Bottom ramp, When a command is allowing ball given, the lever will bearing to be pushed down. return to the elevator. When a command is given, the ball bearing, symbolising the “subservient performer” will drop down the ramp and into the block that is lifted. When the command is activated, the block will be lifted. Within the block, there are 1 openings and a ramp, allowing the ball bearing to funnel through the block and down to the bottom ramp.



Study Ideas: Relationship between the “subservient performer” and how the shelter and space will impact him. Taking ideas from Sou Fujimoto Final Wooden House. How he used planks of wood at differing heights and transforms them into spaces.
