Medaille launches Entrepreneurship Academy in Albania More than a quarter of modern slavery victims in the UK are from Albania. Over the last 10 years Medaille Trust has worked in Albania with the Mary Ward Loreto Foundation to raise awareness of modern slavery and the dangers of being trafficked to the UK. However, the number of Albanian victims referred to the NRM (National Referral Mechanism) last year almost doubled from 1,876 in the year to June 2021, to 3,571 in the year to June 2022. The problem persists because poverty forces many Albanians into the hands of ruthless traffickers. This year Medaille decided to tackle the problem at its source by teaming up with seven Albanian NGOs to launch The Entrepreneurship Academy. Medaille CEO Garry Smith said: “the NGOs will identify enterprises which will work with a team from Angello, a private development foundation, to receive training and work with business coaches. The hope is that they will develop sustainable local businesses which can offer employment opportunities to Albanians so that they do not become victims of modern slavery in the UK.” 7

Christmas at Medaille Trust Christmas is a very special time at Medaille Trust. Our late founder Sr. Ann Teresa began her work befriending people just like Aria. At Christmas time she would invite women who had been trafficked here and on the streets to come to celebrate Christmas at the convent. She once said “The convent became a second home for some. We celebrated Christmas and birthdays with them, took them to the theatre: anything that gave them a bit of happiness”. At Christmas Medaille has always remained true to her vision and our staff will this year go all out to ensure our safe houses are happy festive homes. On our social media pages, Facebook and Instagram, we will tell 12 Stories of Christmas so look out for these in December as we approach Christmas 2022. Here are some pictures of Christmas at Medaille in years gone by. Happy Christmas everyone. 15
