Climate Being a tropical country close to the equator, rain falls throughout the year in Malaysia. The country’s weather is influenced by winds from the Indian Ocean and South China Sea. There are two monsoon seasons. One runs from November to April from the Northeast and other blows in from the Southeast from May to October. Dataran Merdeka (Merdeka Square) As ”Merdeka” means independence in Malay, it is fitting that the square, which commemorates the country’s independence, is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The square stands in front of the beautiful Sultan Abdul Samad Building which is used for official purposes. The waving Malaysian flag atop a 100 meters tall flagpole, is a constant reminder of the country’s freedom from the British. Every year, the square is used for celebrations and parades. Putrajaya The country’s largest mosque was also built here to accommodate religious ceremonies. It was planned as a model for an intelligent garden city. The result is a city that has a modern technological center as well as numerous botanical gardens and places to relax amid nature. One of the most important landmarks in Putrajaya is the Dataran Putra (Putra Square). Food With a rich blend of ethnic groups, there is a wide variety of food in Malaysia in terms of the use of ingredients, cooking methods and tastes. All these differences create an alluring culinary identity. Malaysian cuisine is outstanding for their use of herbs, spices, chili and liberal application of curry powder. Rice is a staple food in every meal. When we refer to Malay food, it is food that predominantly caters to Muslim people so there is no pork or alcohol in this cuisine. The most popular meats used are chicken, beef, lamb and seafood. Nasi Lemak This is the most popular dish in Malaysia. It is rice cooked in coconut milk and spices served with fried anchovies, sliced cucumbers, hard boiled eggs, roasted peanuts and sambal or chili dip. Sambal This spicy dip is similar to the Thai shrimp paste dip or nam prik gapi in Thai. It is made from pounding fresh chili with shallots and tamarind juice. Satay This well-known dish usually comes in the form of grilled skewers of marinated beef or chicken. Did you know?  Malaysia is one of five countries that founded the ASEAN Community in 1967 under the belief that “unity” among these countries would become the “power” that drives the development of ASEAN.  Papaya is Malaysia’s national fruit.  Malaysians who live in the south prefer to used coconut milk in their cooking while those who live in Penang (Northern island) usually use curry powder.  Multiracial Society is a society that can be broken down into smaller groups on the basis of their languages, ethnicity and religion. Or it can mean many different ethnic groups coexisting together.  It is impolite to use your fingers to point at places, objects or people. The correct way is to form a fist with your right hand and extend your thumb in the direction you need to point to.  Tourists should dress appropriately when entering mosques or temples. Women should wear skirts below the knees. Tee shirts, tank tops, shorts and slippers are prohibited. Men should wear shirts with collars and long trousers.
