WELCOME from Artistic Director Tom Trenney Dear friends, I pray that you and your loved ones remain safe and that you are finding your way in this new wilderness of these past several months. Though it may well be awhile until we can gather together for Abendmusik events at First-Plymouth, we are grateful to be able to bring some Abendmusik into the sanctuary of your home. We hope that the music will bring you some peace and hope and joy, even at this difficult time. Our virtual summer concert series begins with a reprise of the unforgettable Nebraska premiere of the American Spiritual Ensemble, recorded in January 2020. This inspiring event was offered in collaboration with the Malone Center, and today’s virtual program is offered as an online fundraiser for the good work of this important non-profit that benefits so many in our community. To make a donation to support the Malone Center’s mission and outreach, please visit: https://donorbox.org/malone-donations It is a privilege and joy to share once again the powerful music and the meaningful message that the American Spiritual Ensemble brought to us. We hope that this performance will inspire you to a deeper commitment to support and encourage the ongoing work of the nonprofits that help our neighbors and communities to prove that Black Lives Matter! Grace and peace, and all blessings!

The American Spiritual Ensemble The American Spiritual Ensemble is a critically-acclaimed professional group composed of some of the finest singers in the classical music world. The vocalists have thrilled audiences around the world with their dynamic renditions of classic spirituals and Broadway numbers. Tenor Dr. Everett McCorvey founded the group in 1995 to honor the American Negro spiritual, as he found many people did not know the difference between spirituals and gospel music. Spirituals date back to slavery, while gospel music came about in the 1930s and 40s. In the words of Dr. McCorvey: “The American Negro spiritual is the mother music that gave birth to jazz, blues, gospel and pop. The spiritual was born in America during the most difficult time in our history, and helped America find its voice. Even as our country was being formed, slaves were not allowed to cover their own music or speak their own language, and in many cases, they were separated from their families. They had to learn a new way of communication. The melodies they sang in the cotton fields, in their homes and at camp meetings became the American slaves’ musical expression. Some of these songs date back to the 1500s. As single melodies performed a cappella or harmonized in different ways with accompaniment, from hauntingly beautiful and poignant melodies to up-tempo songs of praise and glory, the American Negro spiritual is an important part of Americana that helped shape and define our musical identity in the United States. Performers and audiences alike know this music is as relevant today as it was during the Civil War. We all feel this music deeply and viscerally, from our toes to our hearts, from memory to marrow.” The stellar members of the ensemble have performed in venues such as the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Houston Grand Opera, San Francisco Opera, Boston Opera and the Atlanta Civic Opera. They have also performed abroad in England, Germany, Italy, Japan, Scotland, and Spain.

Dr. Everett McCorvey, conductor A native of Montgomery, Alabama, Dr. McCorvey has performed in many venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, Radio City Music Hall in New York and in England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan and the Czech and Slovak Republics. During the summers, Dr. McCorvey is on the artist faculty of the American Institute of Musical Study (AIMS) in Graz, Austria. Dr. McCorvey currently holds the rank of Professor of Voice and Director of Opera at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY. Most recently he was elected as a faculty representative to the UK Board of Trustees, and awarded the Kentucky Star for Literary Arts.
