WELCOMEDear friends,We are grateful that you have come today toexperience the music and message of thisseason’s Christmas With Abendmusik: The WearyWorld Rejoices. As we find ourselves in the midstof a very hectic holiday season, as we arebombarded with the noise of the currentpolitical rhetoric, and as we face the real and truechallenges of our struggles in life, it becomes clearthat, even from the confines of our first worldprivileges, Christmas is not necessarily a time ofperfect peace or pure happiness. May this quiet moment today remind us, however, that God came to be among us at Christmas not to take away the trials and travails of life but, rather, to walk beside us and to struggle with us, offering us sure signs of grace and hope and love at every turn. Allow this moment when we pause to adore the child in the manger to reawaken our hope to the promise that each and every child among us brings to this world. May we on this day claim even a small portion of the joy that God came to offer us: “I have told you these things that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be full.” May your time with Abendmusik today end not at the applause but with a renewed hope for the joy that calls to you in the days to come. Grace and peace, and Merry Christmas! Tom Trenney, Artistic Director

Scripture CollageWake, Awake, for Night is Flying..........................................................................................WACHET AUFText: Philipp Nicolai; translation by William Cook Philipp Nicolai/arr. F. Melius Christiansen Wake, awake, for night is flying: the watchmen on the heights are crying, Awake, Jerusalem, arise! Midnight’s solemn hour is tolling, His chariot wheels are nearer rolling; He comes; prepare, ye virgins wise. Rise up; with willing feet, go forth, the Bridegroom meet, Hallelujah!Bear through the night your well-trimmed light, speed forth to join the marriage rite. Hear Thy praise, O Lord, ascending from tongues of men and angels blending With harps and lute and psaltery. By thy pearly gates in wonder We stand and swell the voice of thunder, in bursts of choral melody: Hallelujah! No vision ever brought, no ear hath ever caught such bliss and joy: We raise the song, we swell the throng, to praise Thee ages all along. Hallelujah!A reading from Luke 2: 1-5

Light dawns on a weary world: the promised day of justice comes. The trees shall clap their hands; the dry lands gush with springs; the hills and mountains shall break forth with singing! We shall go out in joy, and be led forth in peace, as all the world in wonder echoes shalom.Love grows in a weary world when hungry hearts find bread and children’s dreams are fed. Scripture CollageO Holy Night.............................................................................................Adolphe Adam/arr. John RutterText: Cappeau de Roquemaure Drew Duncan, tenor O, holy night, the stars are brightly shining; it is the night of the dear Savior’s birth! Long lay the world in sin and error pining, till He appeared, and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn. Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! O night divine. Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His Gospel is peace. Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother, and in His Name all oppression shall cease. Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we. Let all within us praise His holy Name! Christ is the Lord, then ever, ever praise we, His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim! His pow’r and glory evermore proclaim!Scripture CollageNo More Sorrow....................................................................................................................................Will ToddText from the Book of Revelation And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor crying, neither anymore pain, for the former things are passed away.Scripture CollageAntiphon (Five Mystical Songs) ......................................................................Ralph Vaughan WilliamsText: George Herbert Let all the world in ev’ry corner sing, My God and King. The heav’ns are not too high, His praise may thither fly: The earth is not too low, His praises there may grow. Let all the world in ev’ry corner sing, My God and King. The church with psalms must shout, No door can keep them out: But above all, the heart must bear the longest part. Let all the world in ev’ry corner sing, My God and King.Scripture collage
