March 6, 2019 GREEN TYLER 6:30PM Worship Service Ash Wednesday Prelude Call to Worship Hymn 543 (Please rise in body or spirit, and sing.) God, Be the Love to Search and Keep Me stanza 1: children’s choir; stanzas 2-5: all Our Brokenness The Brokenness of Anger ONE: W hen relationships fracture and dissolve, and we are caught in the wake of disagreement and anger, our spirits absorb the shock, and our hearts break with confusion. It is in anger we feel broken and lost. ALL: Heal the anger in me, O God, as I walk closer to you. The Brokenness of Despair ONE: When sadness consumes us – sometimes for no visible reason, we long for the uplift of joy and the consolation of normalcy. When we lose loved ones too soon and cannot find anything to ease the emptiness. We long to hear your voice in the darkness of our solitude and hopelessness. ALL: Comfort me, O God, as I walk closer to you.

we need to hear in them an ongoing call to be alert and faithful. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hymn 205TEXT: Taizé Community, 1982 STAY WITH ME MUSIC: Jacques Berthier, 1982 Irregular Text and Music © 1984 Les Presses de Taizé (admin. Whether in S Matthew 15:29-31criptureEnglish or Latin, it is most effective when sung unaccompanied and in parts. In many ways it is a miniature equivalent of “Will You Let Me Be Your Servant” (see no. 727). _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Jesus returned to the Sea of Galilee and climbed a hill and sat down. Those who hadn’t been able to speak were talking, the crippled were made well, the lame were walking, and the blind could see again! And they praised the God of Israel. Message All the Broken Pieces Offertory Charles Villiers Stanford For a Closer Walk with God O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heavenly frame; A light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb! Return, O holy dove, return, sweet messenger of rest; I hate the sins that made thee mourn, and drove thee from my breast. So shall my walk be close with God, calm and serene my frame; so purer light shall mark the road that leads me to the Lamb.

the Brokenness of rejeCtion ONE: When we feel overshadowed and eclipsed by others – when what we have to offer is rejected and overlooked – when our envy and longing to be included pulls our souls into despair and dejection we feel broken. Our hearts break; our spirits break. Our relationships are strained; because of these, we feel separated from you, our God. ALL: O God, in the brokenness of rejection, remind us that we are loved, as we walk closer to you. the Brokenness of stress ONE: When the burdens of our responsibilities feel like too much, and our time is overburdened, even with good things, we long for quiet. But instead, we are lost in the brokenness of the stresses of everyday life. In our brokenness we wander away from you. ALL: When we feel overwhelmed by life, O God, help us to walk closer to you. the Brokenness of shame & guilt ONE: When we make mistakes so grave they result in true casualty; when our shame and guilt seem to take our ability to breathe away from us. We wander away in shame and doubt. We turn away in pain. We leave behind the wonder and awe and deny the very gifts we need the most. ALL: When we are broken, O God, mend our spirits as we walk closer to you.

time of Prayer Call to Prayer Prayer through Music Lord, Lead Us Day by Day George Frideric Handel Silent Prayer The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Closing hymn 415 (Please rise in body or spirit, and sing.) Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy RESTORATION stanza 1: choir; all join on refrain; stanzas 2-4: all invitation to ashes & Communion imPosition of ashes Worship Leaders: Hollie Schmidt, Patrick Messer, Jim Keck, KJ Langlais, Maggie Everman, Collin Nick, Tom Trenney, Ariel Merivil, Alleluia Choir (K-2nd grade), Choristers Choir (3rd-5th grade), MidSingers Choir (6th-8th grade), and Plymouth Choir. * Although the Bible and traditional prayers most often use the male pronoun to refer to the divine, it is helpful to remember God is beyond human gender. Consequently, feminine pronouns are effective metaphors as well. * Immediately following this evening’s service, everyone is invited to receive communion in the chapel. All are welcome to simply walk in and receive the elements from one of our clergy.
