Welcome Dear friends, We are grateful that you have come today to experience the music and message of this season’s Christmas with Abendmusik: Guide Us to Thy Perfect Light. As we find ourselves in the midst of a very hectic holiday season, as we are bombarded with the noise of the current political rhetoric, and as we face the real and true challenges of our struggles in life, it becomes clear that, even from the confines of our first world privileges, Christmas is not necessarily a time of perfect peace or pure happiness. May this quiet moment today remind us, however, that God came to be among us at Christmas not to take away the trials and travails of life but, rather, to walk beside us and to struggle with us, offering us sure signs of grace and hope and love at every turn. Allow this moment when we pause to adore the child in the manger to reawaken our hope to the promise that each and every child among us brings to this world. May we on this day experience a small portion of the light that God comes to shine in our darkness: “The true light which enlightens everyone was coming into the world.” May your time with Abendmusik today end not at the applause but with a renewed hope for the joy that calls to you in the days to come. Grace and peace, and Merry Christmas! Tom Trenney, Artistic Director

To us this day it may not be clear, and we may not all agree whether what we do here is worship or performance, but, as a sign of appreciation and gratitude, applause is welcomed at intermission and following the program. Welcome Fantasy on “KINGSFOLD”.........................................................................................................................Dean Wagner The light shines in the darkness… A Scripture Collage from John 1 and 1 John 1 Night of Silence......................................................................................................Daniel Kantor/ arr. John Ferguson (Text: Daniel Kantor (and Joseph Mohr, translated by John F. Young)) Cold are the people, Winter of life, we tremble in shadows this cold endless night, Frozen in the snow lie roses sleeping, flowers that will echo the sunrise, Fire of hope is our only warmth. Weary, its flame will be dying soon. Voice in the distance, call in the night, on wind you enfold us you speak of the light, Gentle on the ear you whisper softly, Rumors of a dawn so embracing, Breathless love awaits darkened souls, soon will we know of the morning. Spirit among us, shine like the star, your light that guides shepherds and kings from afar, Shimmer in the sky so empty, lonely, Rising in the warmth of your Son’s love, Star unknowing of night and day, Spirit we wait for your loving Son. Silent night, holy night. All is calm; all is bright ‘round yon virgin mother and child. Holy infant, so tender and mild, sleep in heavenly peace. A Reading from Luke 2: 1-5

Please remain seated and join in singing. Carol: A Stable Lamp is Lighted (ANDUJAR)...........................................David Hurd/ arr. Zachary Leffew

Son of God, love’s pure light Scripture Collage from Luke 2: 6-7 and John 1 In Winter’s Night (SOMMAR PSALM)......................................................Waldemar Ǻhlén/ arr. Charles Forsberg (Text: Johann Rist, Charles Forsberg) In winter’s night a star appears to usher in the morning, The shepherds wake with one accord to hear the angel’s warning. In manger bed now wakes the child, the hold of Satan breaking, our peace eternal making. A midnight clear, an angel song of virgin birth rejoicing; the glorious song of peace on earth in glowing praises voicing. O’er all the earth the music stirs while child held close is sleeping, the mother watch is keeping. Oh, draw us wholly to you, O Lord, reveal to us your glory; The morning dew so soft and clear marks true salvation’s story. Prepare within our hearts this day a manger bed so lowly, to see you pure and holy. A Reading from Luke 2: 13-14 Glory to God in the Highest (from Dona nobis pacem).................................................Ralph Vaughan Williams (Text: Luke 2: 14) Caroline Kouma, soprano Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men. Dona nobis pacem. (Grant us peace.) The First Nowell...........................................................................................THE FIRST NOWELL/ arr. Mack Wilberg (Text: traditional English carol) The first Noel the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, on a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel! Born is the King of Israel! They looked up and saw a star, shining in the East, beyond them far. And to the earth it gave great light, and so it continued both day and night. Then, let us all with one accord sing praises to our heavenly Lord, Who hath made heaven and earth of naught, and with His blood mankind hath bought. A Reading from Luke 2: 15

Light and life to all he brings… Please rise in body or spirit and join in singing. Carol: Hark the Herald Angels Sing (MENDELSSOHN)- Felix Mendelssohn/ arr. David Willcocks Please be seated.

Glory be to Jesus Christ, Lamb of God, the Father’s only Son, O Thou who takes away all the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Receive our prayers. Thou who sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty in heaven, have mercy on us! For only Thou art holy, only Thou art the Lord. For only Thou art holy, only Thou art most high. In the name of the Father, in the name of the Son, In the name of the Holy Ghost, in the glory of the Father, Amen. Amen! A Reading from Luke 2: 18-20

Christiansen O Light everlasting, O Love never failing. Illumine our darkness and draw us to Thee; May we from Thy spirit receive inspiration that brethren together Thy wisdom may see. Make known to all nations Thy peace and thy salvation! And help us, O Father, thy temple to be. They looked up and saw a star… from Christus......................................................................................................................................Felix Mendelssohn (Text: Matthew 2: 1-2 (adapted by Henry Wilder Foote)) Rebecca Shane, alto Matthew Clegg, Trey Meyer, Jeff Keele, wisemen When Jesus, our Lord, was born in Bethlehem, in the land of Judea; Behold, from the east to the city of Jerusalem there came three wisemen who said: “Say, where is he born, the King of Judea? A Reading from Matthew 2: 9-11 Brightest and Best.............................................................................from Southern Harmony/arr. Shawn Kirchner (Text: Reginald Heber) Hail the blessed morn, see the great Mediator down from the regions of glory descend! Shepherds go worship the babe in the manger, lo, for his guard the bright angels attend. Refrain: Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid; Star in the East, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid. Cold on His cradle the dew-drops are shining, low lies His bed with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore Him in slumber reclining, Maker and Monarch and Savior of all. Refrain. Shall we not yield him, in costly devotion, odours of Edom, and offerings divine? Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean, myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine? Refrain. “Choose Something Like a Star” by Robert Frost I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes....................................................................................................................Adolphus Hailstork (Text: Psalm 121: 1-4, 6-7) Drew Duncan, tenor I will lift up mine eyes to the hills. From whence cometh my help? My help surely cometh from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber nor sleep. The sun will not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. I will lift up mine eyes to the hills. A reading from Isaiah 60: 4-6 Behold the Star..............................................................................African-American spiritual/ arr. William Dawson Caroline Kouma, soprano; Ariel Merivil, tenor Behold the star up yonder! It is the star of Bethlehem. There was no room found in the inn, for Him who was born free from sin. The wise men came from the East, to worship Him, the Prince of Peace. A song broke forth upon the night. It is the star of Bethlehem, peace on earth, goodwill to men. Alleluia, behold the star of Bethlehem!
