50th Season of Gratitude th season of gratitude Fall Program 2021 3

Abendmusik at First-Plymouth 4

50th Season of Gratitude Abendmusik at First-Plymouth’s 50th Anniversary Season For fifty years, Abendmusik has brought inspiring, world-class musical experiences to Lincoln, and, thanks to the generosity of Abendmusik’s sponsors and donors, this season’s 50th anniversary concert series will feature eight performances, offered free of charge, both in person at Lincoln’s historic First-Plymouth Church and online. The season launch on October 3 marks the first live Abendmusik concert since the pandemic began: a chamber choir program poignantly entitled “…and so we go on…” On November 7, Abendmusik hosts the critically-acclaimed Jason Max Ferdinand Singers, a champion of music by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) composers, in its Midwest debut. Abendmusik’s annual Messiah Community Sing (November 28), Christmas festival (December 12), and New Year’s Eve Last Blast with the Plymouth Brass will be exceptional this anniversary year, but the highlight of the season will surely be the May 29 celebration when the Abendmusik Chorus and alumni members will sing together, conducted by both founding director Jack Levick and current director Tom Trenney. Abendmusik will continue to evolve and grow to meet the changing needs of this unique and beautiful community over the next 50 years—welcoming people to experience the hope, light, and joy that inspiring music can bring. Season Sponsors The Conant Family Jon & Joan The Estate of Norma Endowment Michelsen Somerheiser 1

Abendmusik at First-Plymouth …and so we go on… This concert is sponsored by The Trenney family and James and Christi Keim sounding light Tom Trenney, conductor Ariel Merivil and Lee Wright, pianists Program Ne irascaris Domine- William Byrd  (text: Isaiah 64:9) Do not be angry beyond measure, O Lord; do not remember our sins for ever. Oh look upon us, we pray, for we are all your people. Arise, Beloved!- Rosephanye Powell (text adapted from the Song of Solomon 2: 7-13 by Rosephanye Powell) Arise, beloved, fair one, come away; for lo, the winter is past. Come, the rain has gone; the flowers appear, the birds are singing. Come, your hand in mine; we’ll taste of the grapevines. And hear the turtle doves; their voices sing of joy and love. Hush! Do not awaken love. Do not arouse ’til it pleases. As the gazelles and does of the field, so is my beloved. Arise, beloved, fair one, come away. Arise, my love! Arise! 6

Three Latin Motets, op. 38- Charles Villiers Stanford 50th Season of Gratitude Justorum animae 7 (text: Wisdom 3: 1-3) The souls of the righteous are in the hands of God, and the torment of malice shall not touch them: They seem in the eyes of the foolish to be dead, but they are at peace. Coelos ascendit hodie (text: anonymous 12th century) Jesus Christ, the King of Glory, has ascended today into the heavens. He sits at the right hand of the Father and rules heaven and earth. Now all the psalms of David, our father, are fulfilled. Now the Lord sits with the Lord on the seat of God. In this greatest of triumphs, let us bless the Lord. The Holy Trinity be glorified. Let us give thanks to God. Beati quorum via (text: Psalm 119: 1) Blessed are they whose road is straight, who walk in the law of the Lord. A City Called Heaven- Negro spiritual/ arr. Josephine Poelinitz   Glen Thomas Rideout, bass Hold Fast to Dreams (recitative and aria)- Joel Thompson (text: “Harlem” and “Dreams” by Langston Hughes) What happens to a dream deferred? Or does it explode? Does it dry up Hold fast to dreams  like a raisin in the sun? For if dreams die Or fester like a sore— Life is a broken-winged bird And then run? That cannot fly. Does it stink like rotten meat? Hold fast to dreams Or crust and sugar over— For when dreams go like a syrupy sweet? Life is a barren field Maybe it just sags Frozen with snow. like a heavy load.

50th Season of Gratitude In the Middle- Dale Trumbore  (text from “Radiance” by Barbara Crooker) In the middle of a life that's as complicated as everyone else's,  struggling for balance, juggling time. The mantle clock that was my grandfather's has stopped at 9:20; we haven't had time to get it repaired. The brass pendulum is still, the chimes don't ring. One day I look out the window, green summer, the next, the leaves have already fallen, and a grey sky lowers the horizon. Our children almost grown, our parents gone, it happened so fast. Each day, we must learn again how to love, between morning's quick coffee and evening's slow return. Steam from a pot of soup rises, mixing with the yeasty smell of baking bread. Our bodies twine, and the big black dog pushes his great head between;  his tail, a metronome, 3/4 time. We'll never get there, Time is always ahead of us, running down the beach, urging us on faster, faster, but sometimes we take off our watches, sometimes we lie in the hammock, caught between the mesh of rope and the net of stars, suspended, tangled up in love, running out of time. Poor Wayfaring Stranger- American folk song/ arr. Alexander Lloyd Blake Lindsay Kesselman, soprano How do you keep the music playing?- Michel Legrand/arr. Alexander L’Estrange  (text: Alan and Marilyn Bergman)   Patty Kramer, soloist Jehovah Sabaoth (The God of Angel Armies) - Donald Lawrence (text: Donald Lawrence) Ariel Merivil, tenor Hold on!- Negro spiritual/arr.
