TTomrenney 10 YEARS AT FIRST PLYMOUTH & ABENDMUSIK The 2018-19 season is Tom Trenney’s tenth as Artistic Director of Abendmusik and as Minister of Music at First-Plymouth Church. To offer thanks to the Abendmusik community for their first ten years of support and encouragement, Tom and his husband, Brent, are sponsoring the first concert of the season to celebrate this tenth anniversary. We asked Tom to share some about his experiences with Abendmusik since his arrival in 2009, and what he hopes Abendmusik might mean to our community today.
In his words...As you look back at your first ten seasons of programming Abendmusik, what are some of the concerts that were, for whatever reason, particularlyspecial?I will never forget the first time I heard the St. Olaf Choir sing in our sanctuary-- thedeepest memory is of the tears streaming down my face as they sang KennethJennings’ “The Lord is the Everlasting God.” More recently, Conspirare’sperformance of “Considering Matthew Shepard,” our first Abendmusik-sponsoredevent at the Lied Center, was just so powerful-- disquieting and comforting, convicting and deeply moving. As an organist, what a once-in-a-lifetime thrill it was to be ‘home’ at the Liedorgan, accompanied by Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra (crammed into our chancel)in Samuel Barber’s \"Toccata Festiva\".I can remember the feeling of walking down the center aisle to the podium toconduct Mendelssohn’s Elijah, feeling both the weight of responsibility and joy ofpossibility to lead an entire village of singers and instrumentalists in such amonumental work. I also vividly remember a true feeling of wholeness as I stoodbefore the choir and orchestra at the end of the final ‘amen’ of Antonin Dvorak’sStabat Mater. These were profound experiences of unity and purpose. But, perhaps most of all, I will treasure having been here to celebrateAbendmusik’s 40th anniversary, sharing that special, historic moment withAbendmusik’s beloved founder and ambassador Jack Levick, who planted theseeds that we now harvest in such abundance. It was a true grace to have theopportunity to lift him up and to honor his legacy which continues to deeplyinfluence all that is possible for us today.
How has Abendmusik evolved since you have been here?Abendmusik began in 1972, at a time when the music and arts scene in Lincolnwas far less developed than it is today; remember the Lied Center did not comeuntil the 1990s. Over these 46 years, Abendmusik has gradually evolved to findits particular calling within what is now a vibrant and diverse arts community. Ihave sensed our calling to be a place where the spiritual dimension of music canbe honestly and authentically the essence of what we do; where singing from theheart and to the heart is essential. For example, our annual Christmas Festival is one of (if not) the only Christmasconcerts in Lincoln that shares the healing message of the Christmas story, and allare invited to become part of the music making. And, more practically related tothat, we have begun to live into one of my dreams: to make our mostspiritually-compelling programs free of charge so that we can offer thesemessages of hope and light to the community without the barrier of ticket prices.Standing on nearly five decades of tradition, we are one of, if not the only venuein the area that continues to regularly prepare and perform the choral/orchestralrepertoire-- inspiring collaborations between area collegiate choral ensemblesand our Abendmusik Chorus and orchestra. I am proud to have been part of thefounding of our Youth Masterworks Festival which brings together high schoolstudents (who most frequently get together to compete on athletic fields!) to singside by side with one another and with professional soloists and instrumentaliststo give voice to the choral/orchestral masterworks of the great composers of alltime. These epic masterworks tend to inspire a sense of awe and wonder in boththe singer and the listener-- again, awakening the spiritual voice within us.
What would you like for us to know about your experience with Abendmusik sofar that I haven't asked?I would like for you all to know how grateful I am to be the singularly fortunateperson who has the opportunity to share in this mission with you. What ablessing Abendmusik has been for me as a musician, as a minister, and as aperson. I would like for you all to know how thankful I am for the many goodpeople who have worked tirelessly beside me over these ten years-- our boardmembers, our volunteers, our choir members, our advertisers, our donors, andour sponsors-- but especially my former colleagues Jeremy Bankson andRebecca Shane, and my current colleagues, Drew Duncan and Ariel Merivil. Itmay well be cliche, but it is also quite true: it takes a village to live into a missionlike this. And, I would you to know how thankful I am that you have chosen tobe here with us today as you are reading this. There are so many beautiful andgood things we can choose to do with every second of the 168 hours we aregiven each week. For the investment you are making in us today, I can only hopeyou will find an extra measure of hope and joy to carry with you into the daysahead. What do you hope Abendmusik will mean to those who experience it?There are a lot of concerts one can attend to be entertained; I'm not sureAbendmusik will ever exceed anyone's expectations for entertainment. There area lot of concerts one can attend to be impressed; I'm not sure Abendmusik willever exceed anyone's expectations of being impressed. However, I would hopethat the content and message of the music we offer at Abendmusik will sustainour musicians and our audiences long after the applause fades away. I wouldhope that we will leave an Abendmusik gathering with a renewed commitment tobecome, in our own, unique ways, instruments of grace and peace in ourneighborhoods. I would hope that Abendmusik might soften our hearts andopen our minds to more compassionately and courageously serve our world. Ifthis transformation happens for even one among us, the village it takes to makethat possible can rejoice. My fervent prayer is this: \"May God give us faith to singalways.\" Bless you, and thank you all!

TMhe essiah Notes by Carolyn Dow, Polley Music Library Manager, Lincoln City LibrariesAbendmusik’s annual Messiah Community Sing-Along features one of the world’smost beloved and most frequently performed choral works, the oratorio The Messiah. It was one of the first oratorios in which the choir was as important as the soloists. The Messiah was composed by George Frederic Handel (1685-1759), a Germanbaroque composer who spent the later part of his life and career in England as anaturalized British citizen, and England’s favorite composer of his day. Handel hadcome to London after a lengthy stay in Italy, where he had become a master of Italianopera. As tastes changed in London, Handel had to change from writing Italian operasto writing oratorios for the new Protestant middle classes. His oratorios graduallyevolved from works resembling unstaged operas featuring soloists, to choral workswith soloists, like The Messiah. And most importantly, the heroic stories of hisoratorios were presented in English. The libretto that Charles Jennens sent to Handel in 1741, tells the story of the Messiahusing texts from both the Old and New Testaments. Handel set the text in three parts, the first being the Advent and Christmas story, which is the section that will beperformed during the Messiah Community Sing-Along, plus the “Hallelujah Chorus”that ends the second section, the passion, resurrection and ascension. The thirdsection reflects on the resurrection and the theme of Christian redemption.(Audiences traditionally stand for The “Hallelujah Chorus” because King George IIonce stood during a performance.)Handel wrote The Messiah very quickly, between August 22 and September 14, 1741.He borrowed melodies from some of his other works, as was a general practice at thetime. But much was new material. An invitation from the Duke of Devonshire, LordLieutenant of Ireland to visit Dublin arrived while Handel was working on the oratorio.Handel went to Dublin in December 1741, taking the work with him.The first performance took place at Neale’s New Music Hall in Dublin, on April 13,1742. The choir consisted of singers from Christ Church and Saint Patrick’s Cathedralin Dublin, so in the Anglican cathedral tradition, it was a choir comprised of men andboys. Like many of the performances in Dublin, the premiere was a charityperformance that benefitted various institutions in Dublin. The Messiah wasimmediately successful in Dublin. The first London performance took place a yearlater, and it took about a decade to build the popularity in London that the first Dublinperformance had created. But the work did gain popularity. The first massed choir performance of The Messiah took place in London atWestminster Abbey, in 1784, as part of a festival commemorating Handel. Some 500musicians took part, beginning a tradition that continues to this day, as inAbendmusik’s Messiah Community Sing-Along.
