MESA conducted online test series for pre-final and final year students. This test series is aimed to prepare students for the GATE examination and also for the technical round of the placement interviews. This initiative was taken to help prepare our fellow batchmates and juniors for the rigors of the placements and also for highly competitive entrance exams. They got critical feedback and review at the end of each test where they could analyse their strengths and weaknesses in each domain of Mechanical Engineering. The tests covered the subjects of all semesters. So, it was a very good opportunity for the students to brush up the concepts of the subjects that had been taught from semester III onwards. These tests were conducted each weekend and the test syllabus was announced beforehand. The concerned faculty would update the students about the time and the subject for each weekend. The questions were asked in multiple choice format, same as the format for competitive exams, and each question highlighted every detail of the given topic to provide a challenging yet informative test for the student. As a result, every student had the opportunity to understand the competitive exams and how to manage through these exams as well as how to manage their time during these competitive exams, and furthermore remain in touch with earlier syllabus to keep their skills in check, which are helpful for future job interviews and courses they may take up ahead in their lives.

MESA is one of the most active student associations of ITNU, actively organizing various activities with the aim of overall development of the students. Even during this time of the pandemic, when all the students were studying from home, MESA had organised an expert lecture on Topic \"How to crack a competitive exam?\" On 27th June 2020, a webinar was kept on the Google meet platform. The expert lecture was given by Mr Gaurav Joshi (2014 pass-out BTech Mechanical, Nirma Alumni) who is currently working as an IRSME officer, Indian Railways. He also has worked with BARC, Aakash Institute, Hitachi Air Conditioners. And has cleared Competitive exams like UPSC-ESE AIR 5, GATE AIR 47, BARC 99.73 percentile, ISRO, ONGC, IISc, etc. Mr. Joshi explained the importance of competitive exams, its scope, cut offs and the real life scenarios. He also discussed about the GATE exam in depth, ranging from its question pattern to which parts are easier to score and which are difficult. By various techniques, motivation and proper planning, he helped explained a roadmap for the students to achieve their goal through the best combination of planning and hard work. It was attended by more than 110 participants and was a great experience which imparted us with lots of knowledge with respect to the case of competitive exams. We, MESA thank Mr. Joshi for sharing his experience and ideologies by this informative session.

The world of robotics and automobiles always fascinates and entertains students. The Autocalypse and Robocalypse was started with the aim of increasing awareness among the students of classes 10th, 11th and 12th to these particular fields. This year’s event was organized and managed by the Mechanical Engineering Students’ Association [MESA], School of Engineering, Institute of Technology, Nirma University under the able guidance of Dr. Mihir Chauhan and Prof. Rudresh Makwana, and was held on the 3rd and 4th October, 2020. This year, the event was organized as part of Silver Jubilee celebration of the Institute on the very auspicious occasion of 26th Foundation Day of Institute of Technology, Nirma University and graced by Shri Vijay Rupani, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Gujarat via Online platform. This year’s event marked the 11th edition of Autocalypse and 5th edition of Robocalypse. Every year students from various schools of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar are invited to attend the event on our campus. However due to Covid-19 Pandemic, the event was organised virtually and therefore, students of schools all across Gujarat were invited for the event. There were 450 students, who were accompanied by their teachers, from 25 schools of Gujarat, for this two- day workshop saga. All the participants were benefited and provided with the knowledge of Automobiles and Robotics in separate groups through online webinar sessions on the very first day i.e. 3rd October 2020.

The Autocalypse workshop included introductory expert lecture followed by online demonstration of Omni car cut section model, IC engine components and sub systems of automobile and the demonstration of BAJA ATV. This workshop was conducted by the SAE BAJA Team of Nirma University. The Robocalypse workshop included introductory expert lecture followed by online training on the making of line follower robot which includes assembly of components, IT sensors, logical understanding of line following algorithm, Arduino programming, etc. This workshop was conducted by the Team Nirma Robocon. On the second day (4th October 2020), an Idea Presentation competition was held where in pre-recorded videos showcasing and presenting the innovative ideas, submitted by various schools, were played online and the best Three Ideas were awarded. The First prize of ₹2000/- with a Winner Trophy and a certificate was awarded to Prakash Higher Secondary School, Ahmedabad. The second prize of ₹1500/- with a trophy and a certificate was awarded to Nirma Vidhya Vihar, Ahmedabad. During the valedictory feedback session many of the participating schools, came forward and shared their experiences of one of its kind and first ever organized online event and showcased their gratitude towards the event. This event is one of the extension activities conducted by MESA, whose mere aim is to give an idea to the upcoming UG batches about the automobile and robotics working, making and its events. MESA looks forward to continue this legacy. .

The ‘Patron’ is considered to be the highest authority and most important person of MESA and only the Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering is granted this position. The role of Patron in MESA is no less important than that of the Father in a family. All the activities of MESA are conducted under the mentorship and direction of the Patron and he is the one who has the final say in all the matters of MESA. Since the year 2017, Dr. V.J. Lakhera has served as the patron of MESA and under his guidance and support MESA has conducted incalculable successful events and workshops aimed at the betterment of the students and society. Whether it be a social event like cloth donation drive or a prestigious national level event like Praveg, Lakhera sir has always stood by the students and given his 100 percent in every activity of MESA. Dr. Lakhera’s contribution to MESA is invaluable. As per the established practice, the position of Patron is transferred to the new HOD at the end of the tenure. In 2020, with the end of the current term, Dr. Lakhera stepped down from the position and MESA welcomed its new Patron Dr. K.M. Patel as the head of MESA family. Dr Kaushikkumar Mithabhai Patel is working as Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department since 2011. He obtained BE (Mechanical Engineering) in 1991 and MTech (Manufacturing Engineering) in 2003 from Gujarat University and IIT Bombay respectively. He obtained PhD degree from IIT Delhi in 2011. Dr Patel also holds Postgraduate Diplomas in Marketing Management and Finance Management from IGNOU. He has about twenty-four years of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Due to the current pandemic situation, the ceremony for Patron changeover was conducted in online mode this year in the presence of all the faculty advisors and student members of MESA, where the flag of MESA was handed over to Dr. K.M. Patel as a gesture, which represents the transfer of authority and responsibilities to the new Patron.
