MOTHER GRACIE MAE JOHNSON g{x `tàÜ|tÜv{ On June 26, 1935 in Doerun Georgia, a beautiful, a happy baby girl was born to the parentage of Katrina (Katie) Nixon and Allen Roberts. They named their daughter Gracie Mae. She was the oldest of two children. Both parents proceed her in death. Gracie relocated to California in 1954. She married Jordan Johnson Sr. To this union, seven children were born. Mr. Johnson, five of their children, Wade, Debra (Debbie), Jordan Jr., Michael Sr., Bruce, one grandson Michael Jr., all proceed her in death. Gracie was educated in the Doerun school system from grade school through high school. She came to know and accept Christ while living in Georgia. After moving to California, she joined First Community Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Willie Powers. She was highly respected, very loved by the late Pastor Willie Powers and Sister Powers as well all the Associate Ministers, the late Minister Abney (Undertaker), and the late Minister Henderson. The late Pastor Reed became the pastor of the First Community Missionary Baptist Church after the death of Pastor Powers. Pastor Reed was constantly at Gracie’s side upon the deaths of three of her children, and her Mother’s and her grandchild. Pastor Powers was also at her side for the passing of two of her children. Gracie loved her church and her church family and served in many ministries. She was on the Mother’s Board, Usher Board, Mission and over the church kitchen. Many mission meetings were held at Sister Johnson’s home. She made the children stay out of the room where the meeting was. When it was over, the children got the refreshments and they really enjoyed them. In her earlier years, Gracie worked at South Gate High School. Because of her love for cooking, she opened a restaurant later in her life and it did well. She also had many hobbies, but her greatest love was raising her children, cooking and feeding people. Gracie was very soft spoken and loved people. Gracie spoke to everyone, while walking to the market with all of her older children. Tyrone was the baby, he had to stay with Mr. & Mrs. Russell. She used to speak to everyone she passed by and people in their yard and sitting on their porch. When asked why she spoke to everyone, she said you never know who that person might be so always be kind and speak. (She smiled) Gracie fed the homeless on every 3rd Wednesday of the month until the pandemic started March 21st. Last year she loved having Sunday dinners and birthday dinners. It made her very happy to be surrounded by her children, grands, great grands, God children & friends. She had many God children at church that loved her. Gracie Mae Johnson’s love will forever remain in the hearts and minds of those she left behind to cherish her memories; her children: Bernice Johnson Stansberry of Palmdale, CA, Tyrone Johnson Sr. (Nettie) of Los Angeles, Janice Johnson of Los Angeles, God-daughter LaShawn Barnett of Arizona, one brother Melvin Tolbert of Alabama; grandkids Alfred, Renee, Jennifer, William, Eddie, Andre, Cupid, Ebony, Andre, Lee, Tyvon Sr., Latrina, Michael Jr., Michelle, Makishia, Lakilha, Tyrone Jr., Tyronesha, & Trunidra. MAMA Mama I miss you so much, I will always remember how you brought us up to always speak to people. One day I asked you why you always speak to people, you said you never know who that person is… might be God. You loved cooking. You taught us as a child to never be picky about food. Even if you didn’t like it, say it was good. LOL… I’m going to miss your Sunday dinners. We talked and laughed. Mama you were a strong woman. I never saw you cry when you lost your children and grandson. Mother you always said it’s going to be alright. Miss your calls already. Thank you for helping with my children and grandchildren. Mama, you fought a good fight. You finished the course. “Take your rest”, BERNICE. Love you! Dear Grandma Gracie, thank you for welcoming us into your family. We always with Bernice and everyone always welcome us as a part of the Johnson family. That’s because of you. You always treated us like we were a part of your family. Me and my boys were always welcome to your house, your table. I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. You went to rest, and how our heart is broken. Sleep well grandma. We will forever miss you. I always remember asking you for hot water cornbread and cabbage. I’d always get it too. Thank you. I will always cherish your memories. A beautiful soul at rest. Rest in Peace Grandma Gracie Johnson. Love you to eternity. BARBARA AND BOYS. SAFELY HOME I am home in Heaven, dear ones Oh, so happy and so bright. There is perfect joy and beauty, In this everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over; Every restless tossing passed, I am now at peace forever, Safely Home in Heaven at last.
Grandma , I thank God you were able to be with me for 32 years. I love and miss you grandma. People say time heals all wounds but that’s not true, I miss the phone calls asking me what I’m cooking. Grandma I know I made you proud doing all the family gatherings. I did it all for you. You ask I set it up. Sad to say things will not be the same. To My Mama Grace, I’m going to miss you so much for all of the times you have nourished me, taught me, and spanked me as a real mother should. I want to thank you for all the courage you taught me and all the good times we had together. I will carry on all your knowledge I was taught for the rest of my life. Rest on in peace. Love Always, Your Goddaughter, LASHAUN
