DON PERRY HAMILTON It was a silent night; all was calm, and all was bright. God’s glory appeared on December 25, 2022, calling Don Perry Hamilton into His presence. Don Perry was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on October 21, 1938. He was the fourth of four children born to Robert O’Neal, Sr. and Ella Lee (Pennywell) Hamilton. He attended Little Hope Elementary School, Central Junior High for the Colored and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1956. He attended Southern University for 2 years, thereafter, moving to Los Angeles, California in 1959. In 1960, he married Mary Jo Billups and to their union was born a beloved daughter, Deborah Lynn. Later, he married Janice W. Huley in 1974 and to their union was born a son, Donald Jason. Don and Janice resided in Los Angeles and remained married for 48 years until his transition. Don became employed with General Motors Southgate sometime in the 1960’s as a painter; moving up through the ranks, he was promoted to a general foreman. He would later retire in 1983 after the plant moved to Michigan. At an early age, Don united with the Bright Star Baptist Church of Shreveport, Louisiana where he was baptized by the late Rev. Kelly Key. While in Los Angeles he became a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church under the Pastorage of the late Rev. J.T. Stewart and late Rev. E.E. Stafford. Then he moved his membership to Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church on March 27, 1988. The Booker T. Washington HS Class of 1956, affectionately called BTW Class of ‘56, established a Los Angeles Chapter in 1977, where Don served as treasurer for 43 years, until the chapter dissolved. “He did not miss a penny,” shared classmate Mrs. Eliza Martin. The BTW class was his second family. He loved his classmates dearly, including those still residing in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was a dear friend and confidante to all who knew him. Don Perry is survived by his beloved wife Janice, daughter Deborah Lynn Hamilton- McNair, son Donald Jason Hamilton, three grandchildren: Christian Imani McNair (Fiancé Genesis Estrada) of Arizona, Christina S. McNair and Christopher L. McNair, Jr. both of Los Angeles, niece: Cheryl Wendy Robinson of Texas and nephews: Gerald Day of New York and Ricky Day of Long Beach, and a host of relatives, friends and neighbors. Don was preceded in death by his parents, sister Rosetta Day Warmsley, and brothers Robert O’Neil Hamilton and Claudell Hamilton.
