International School for Jain Studies INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL FOR JAIN STUDIES (A Division of Amar Prerana Trust) SELF STUDY IS THE SUPREME AUSTERITY Fortnightly Newsletter Vol#05 | Issue#03 | No.01 | March 2022 Lessons from Ukraine War The mighty deploy physical force against a lesser thing. Why include it in this newsletter? I think it's a great illustration of the Jain spiritual principles expressed in the following quotation about Bahubali. /kEeks eaxyeqfDdÎa] vfgalk lateks roksA nsok fo ra uealafr] tLl /kEes l;k e.kksAA “That which is non-violence, self-restraint and austerity is Dharma (Spiritual Values). It is by virtue of spiritual values that supreme spiritual beneficence results. To him whose mind is (absorbed) in spiritual values even gods pay homage.” Saman Suttam-82 Jainism teaches us to be strong, healthy, clever, compassionate, self-reliant, and self- sufficient. Strong people can only be peaceful, as shown in the Bahubali-Bharat episode. Let me describe my previous fifteen days' experience with you all. My daughter Anita from Switzerland and I visited Pune to work with ISJS and meet Dr. Abhay Firodia. Having discussions with ISJS colleagues and inspiring them to go the extra mile for ISJS objectives, followed by Dr. Firodia's exceptional hospitality with visits to the Navalveerayatan and upcoming museum, we also visited the under-construction Manstambh for the museum in Ahmedabad, and Palitana to be with the Venerable Achayashri Taima and we undertook the divine pilgrimage of Palitana. On our return to Delhi, I and Anita spent a day with our two schools for 2000 underprivileged students (boys and girls) in old Delhi. Our school is functionally utilized as an ISJS experiment for inculcating Value Education based on Jain teaching along with a regular curriculum, for underprivileged students. Our delight knew no bounds when we saw the traditional schools updating their facilities. Having children thank my family and me for our time and money made us feel humbled and fortunate. My 81st birthday was a great celebration of thankfulness and the experience of living a fulfilling life. On my value education experiences, Dr. Firodia asked me to create a Value Education curriculum for his trusts and Veerayatan's schools. So, friends, let us maintain following the above ideas to be strong, healthy, and happy. President, ISJS

1 FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK Dear Reader: Jai Jinendra! The current world is more complicated and hazardous than ever before. A century- and-a-half into its existence, contemporary science is undeniably capable of conquering terrifying forces and many of nature's mysteries. As if that weren't bad enough, it has also failed miserably at overcoming the human emotions and biases that are more lethal than any weapon ever devised. In such a world of uncertainty, chaos, and violence. Jain philosophy certainly has answers to our deep-rooted problems. Since its inception in 2005, ISJS through its Jainism-related educational and awareness activities, is trying to make incremental changes in our programs on making present lifestyles happier by introducing 'Ahimsa' as a way of living. Our new initiatives like Value education in schools, Nonviolent food, Business ethics are some new editions to our regular programs. Further, to let our esteemed readers (Jain professionals, teachers, and practitioners) voice out their opinion on existing problems and their solutions; from this issue we are starting a new column “Speak Up” which would invite original short articles based on Jainism and any concurrent events of social significance. On a concluding note, the ISJS family is saddened to hear about the passing away of one of the towering personalities in the interfaith world and renowned Jain scholar cum philanthropist Dr. Natubhai Shah, who breathed his last this month. ISJS family pays him homage. He was instrumental in bringing Jainism to a central stage in the United Kingdom and Europe. With this editorial page, we want to keep you updated on ISJS efforts promoting Jain studies. We sincerely appreciate your opinions and recommendations for improving the overall effectiveness of our efforts. Malay Patel, PhD
