Kay’sfamily history is filled with stories about her grandfather, including the founding ofthe National Farm School, now Delaware Valley University, and meeting PresidentTheodore Roosevelt. Manfred and Babetta Krauskopf (Rabbi Krauskopf’s son anddaughter-in-law) raised their two children Kay and Joseph Louis at KI. In 1947, Kayand Michael Brylawski were married by Rabbi Malcolm Stern, and they raised theirtwo children Joan and Robert at KI. AND BARBARA KAHNCharles Kahn, Jr. and his family’s connections to KI began in 1898 when Charles’grandparents Jacob and Julia Kahn (born in the 1870s in Philadelphia) were marriedat KI September 15, 1898. Their son Charles Kahn, Sr. married Ruth Goldberger atKI in 1921, and their sons Charles, Jr. and Richard continued the deep KI connectionwith Charles being confirmed at KI in 1940. Ruth donated the Jeremiah stained glasswindow, in memory of Charles, Sr. when he passed away. Charles and his brotherRichard honored their mother by establishing the Ruth G. Kahn Music Fund thatcontinues to this day to support KI music programming. Charles and his wife Barbaraappreciate the open doors at KI, its willingness, even in the early days, to embraceother non-Jewish religious institutions and to represent important American values.The Kahn family continues to embrace KI and all its wonderful programs. JERRY AND CHARLOTTE NEW AND PAMELA AND ROBERT SALTZBURGThe New and Saltzburg Families are a five-generation KI family with their longassociation beginning with its first member Albert New, who emigrated fromGermany to Philadelphia and married Sippora Raff at KI in 1898. As German Jews, theNew family was attracted to a German speaking synagogue. Ralph and Mabel Newfollowed and raised their two children Jerry and Ronald New at KI. Jerry New was inthe last class to be confirmed by Rabbi Fineshriber; his brother Ronald was confirmedby Rabbi Korn. Jerry and his wife Charlotte raised their three children, Linda, Pamelaand David, at KI. All three were confirmed at KI. Pam and David became B’naiMitzvah as well. In 1996, Rabbi Maslin and Cantor Allen officiated at the wedding ofPam and Robert Saltzburg who have raised their three children William, Jacob andShayna at KI. Pam is Rabbi Sussman’s very able assistant, and Robert is currently aKI officer, serving as Treasurer. His grandparents Antoinette Hess and Harry Asher were marriedat KI in 1899. His parents Abe and Lillian Asher were married in 1928; Lillian was ateacher at KI. Myrna and Howard were married in 1958; Rabbi Korn officiated. Howardserved as President of both Temple Council and Brotherhood and as KI Treasurerand Vice President. He was also instrumental in KI’s move to Elkins Park. Myrna wasSisterhood President (1978-1980) and served on the KI Board for many years. BARBARA ASHER BRONSTEINBarbara Asher Bronstein traces her family’s KI membership to great-grandparentsMoses and Julia Hess who were married by Rabbi Krauskopf at KI on Broad Street.Her grandparents Harry Asher and Antoinette Hess were married in 1899 by RabbiWilliam H. The Bronsteins raised their threechildren at KI and their KI involvement included both serving on Temple Council,and Barbara serving on the Confirmation Committee, the Nursery School FoundingCommittee and the yearly KI Antiques Fair Committee and as SisterhoodPresident (1972-74). JAMES AND RACHEL GOFFJames Goff and Rachel Goff trace their KI roots to the late 1800s. In the 1950s Jimwas a neighbor to KI’s new Elkins Park synagogue and watched it being built. Heattended KI Sunday school there. His great-grandfather Ellis and two great-great-uncles also attend KI Sunday school in 1877. These brothers became three of theseven Gimbel brothers of the Gimbels department store. Ellis A. Gimbel, an activeKI member, went on to become a noted Philadelphia businessman, civic leader andphilanthropist. Jim’s mother Ann Gimbel Goff continued the family’s connectionto KI as has Jim and his wife Rachel (Dr. Rachel Sorokin). Isaac and wife Ida had four children,, Meyer,Edwin, Beatrice and Robert. Both Meyer and Edwin were married at KI in 1909 and1923, respectively. Edwin’s wife Alice, was the daughter of Joseph H. Hagedorn,KI President (1922-1938). Carl Spiegel, Dean’s father-in-law, married BeatriceSchoeneman, sister of Michael Simon’s grandmother Bertha. Dean was confirmed atKI in 1947 and Robert was confirmed in 1936. Dean and Robert Spiegel were marriedin 1955 by Rabbi Korn at KI. Their children Karen and Roger were also confirmed atKI. PHYLLIS DRUCKER SICHEL AND ROBERT DRUCKERPhyllis Drucker Sichel and Robert Drucker have deep ties to KI, tracing their KIroots back to German immigrants in the late 1800s. Phyllis was confirmed at KI in1941; her brother Robert was confirmed in 1943. Their father Sylvan Drucker servedas KI President (1959-61). Phyllis and her husband Howard’s three sons, all wereconfirmed at KI. With a deep appreciation of KI’s history, Phyllis was instrumental ininitiating the KI Archives. FLORENCE ROTHMAN DREIFUS DEUTSCHERFlorence Rothman Dreifus Deutscher has been a KI member her whole life. Hergreat-grandfather Morris Mendelsohn was the first family member to join KI inthe late 1800s. Morris’ brother Emanuel was married at KI in 1872. Another brotherLouis was the grandfather of Dr. Michael Brylawski, who married Kathryn Krauskopf,daughter of Rabbi Krauskopf. Florence’s grandmother Florence Mendelsohn wasconfirmed at KI in 1894, and was married at KI in 1906 to Roy Guthman and againin 1915 to David Wyman. Florence’s parents, Marion and Mark Rothman, werealso married at KI. Florence, her brother, Mark and Florence’s daughters were allconfirmed at KI. EMIL COHN, III AND LOIS STARREmil Cohn, III and Lois Starr were married at KI in 1958. Emil’s brother Josephcelebrated his Bar Mitzvah, and both Emil and Joseph were confirmed at KI. Emil’sparents, Emil Cohn, Jr. and Ruth Kun, daughter of Judge Joseph L. Kun, (the 1stpresident of the of KI’s Men’s Club) were married at KI in 1934. Emil Cohn, Sr.married Hannah Asch at KI in 1901. Lois, confirmed at KI in 1953 (as was her brother,Rabbi Earl Starr, in 1947), was the daughter of Jerome and Rose Toll Starr. Earl Starrwas the president of his Confirmation Class, during KI’s 100th year; he later marriedPhyllis Tatcher, (who was also confirmed) at KI. Jerome, Morris and Beatrice’sparents, Abraham and Caroline Schlosstein Starr were KI members as early as 1902.Emil and Lois’s son Andy had his Bar Mitzvah at KI, and Andy and his sister Judywere both confirmed at KI. CARLYN RAINS ABRAMS AND GINGER ABRAMS LANE AND DAVID LANECarlyn Rains Abrams and Ginger Abrams Lane proudly say that “our wholefamily has always loved KI; We are KI people!”. Caroline Slosstein Starr (Carlyn’sgrandmother and Ginger’s great-grandmother) was a member of one of the firstKI Confirmation Classes. Caroline married Abraham Starr and had three children,Morris, Jerome and Beatrice. Morris and Jerome were confirmed at KI in 1903 and1912, respectively. Jerome had two children Lois Starr Cohn and Rabbi Earl Starr.Beatrice married Horace Rains in 1915, and they had two children, Carlyn (Ginger’smother) and Alan. Carlyn and Arthur Abrams, z’l were married in 1944. Her maternal grandparents were MaxLeopold and Ida Marshall Leopold whose brother was Louis Marshall. Margaret’spaternal grandparents were Samuel and Sarah Samuels. Bertram and DorothyLeopold Bennett, Margaret’s parents, were both confirmed at KI in 1916 and 1915,respectively, and were married at KI in 1926. Margaret was confirmed at KI in 1946,and still maintains connections with friends from that time. DAVID AND GRACIELA STEELDavid Steel has a long history of KI membership dating back to the 1904 marriageof his great-grandparents, Herman D. Steel and Freda Neufeld, at KI. His grandfatherPhilip Nathans Steel was confirmed at KI in 1922 and was married to Janet Kahn at KIin 1933. RICHARD AND JILL POMERANTZRichard and Jill Pomerantz were married at KI in 1959. They trace their family’s KIbeginnings to their grandparents who were German and Russian Jews. Richard’sgrandparents, Amen and Clova Goldberg Pomerantz, were married at KI in 1906, andhis parents, Richard and Adele Bobrow Pomerantz, were married at KI in 1933. BothRichard and his father were also confirmed at KI. DOROTHY ELFMAN FREADDorothy Elfman Fread, was confirmed at KI in 1958. Though no longer living in thearea, Dorothy still identifies with KI. Her parents Bernard Lehman Elfman and EthelSmith were married at KI in 1938. Bernard was remarried to Esther Levine by RabbiFineshriber at KI in 1947. Bernard’s parents Joseph Elfman and Delia Lehman weremarried at KI in 1904. Dora and her younger brother Julius died in the 1913 flu epidemic.In 1914, Isaac married Dora’s sister Minnie at KI. Susan and Jane’s father EmanuelDavid Lowenstein was confirmed at KI in 1924, served as KI Vice President and wason the Search Committee that recommended Rabbi Maslin to become the KI’s SeniorRabbi in the 1980s after Rabbi Korn’s death. The Lowenstein family was instrumentalin KI’s move to Elkins Park in the 1950s. In 1974, Susan dedicated the sanctuary’sSecond Isaiah stained glass window in memory of her father Emanuel. JANICE SMITH BERSJanice Smith Bers was married to Julian Bers in 1939. Their children Wendy, Nanand Andrew were all confirmed at KI. Janice’s parents Nathan and Dorothy Smithwere both confirmed at KI in 1912 and were married by Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf in1916. Nathan’s sister Carrie Smith Cohen was the mother of Jane Cohen Schwartzand grandmother of Carey Schwartz Roseman. Janice was confirmed in the sameclass as Rabbi Korn. Janice and Julian raised their family at KI and Janice still livesnear the synagogue. Her grandparentsJoseph and Thekla Back Harberg were married in Philadelphia in 1890 and becameKI members 100 years ago. Her parents Dr. Sidney Harberg and Lenore (Lena)Abramson were married at KI in 1931. Ruth said when she was growing up, KI, TempleJudea and Rodeph Shalom gathered for many joint programs, and she knew all threecongregations’ rabbis. Rabbi Fineshriber was “like family”. Ruth and her husbandJan (Bud) DuBois have been active members of the congregation. Bud is a FederalJudge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania,and served with distinction as KI President (1985-1987). During his tenure, Bud helpedrewrite the KI bylaws, specifically about the process to select a new rabbi, and wasalso instrumental in bringing Rabbi Maslin to KI. LOUISE BERS ROSELouise Bers Rose and her late husband Leon M. Rose were married by RabbiFineshriber in a double ceremony, sharing the day with Julian and Janice Bers in1939. Louise was confirmed at KI in 1931, as were here older brothers Julian (1925) andSolomon (1929.) Their parents Abraham M. and Hilda Newmeyer Bers were listed asKI members as early as 1916/17. NEYSA CRISTOL ADAMSNeysa Cristol Adams and her family have a longstanding connection to KI. Neysawas seven when she started KI’s Sunday School, a mere 88 years ago! Her parentsMorris (who had emigrated from Latvia) and Fannye (born in England) were marriedin Philadelphia in 1907. In 1942 Neysa married Arlin Adams at KI, officiated byRabbi Fineshriber. Arlin, one of the most highly respected and notable judges of theThird Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, also served as KI President (1955-1957) and wasinstrumental in KI’s historic move to Elkins Park. 2017 Spring Celebration Weekend DR. CHARLES GREENBAUMDr. Charles Greenbaum was one of very few people to have a Bar Mitzvah in Hebrewat KI in the 1930s. So when he was confirmed in 1941, he read the Ten Commandmentsin Hebrew. This is just one of the memories from his longtime membership at KI.Charles’ parents Dr. Sigmund S. and Rae Refowich Greenbaum were married at KIin 1922 by Rabbi Joseph Krauskopf, and were listed as members in 1923. Charles andJulia Greenbaum were married in New York by Rabbis Fineshriber, Levinthal andSchulman in 1955. Julie was a KI officer and served on many committees offering herwise advice and good counsel. Julie and Charles raised their family in the warmth ofits community and Charles continues to be active and involved. CONNIE POLLACK AND SUSAN POLLACKMother and daughter Connie Pollack and Susan Pollack speak of KI as their “secondhome”, a reference to the important place it holds in their lives. Connie’s husbandCharles Pollack was an esteemed KI leader, serving in numerous capacities, and asKI President (1964-68). Charles continued to mentor other leaders beyond his tenure.Susan, who was confirmed at KI in 1961, spoke of her father’s close friendship withRabbi Korn and former KI Executive Director David Mitchell with both of them beingever-present when Susan’s sister died at a young age. Susan says the family hasalways been close with the clergy, and that has continued to this day. THE SHENKMAN FAMILYThe Shenkman Family has a long history and many memories of KI. Arlen Shenkmanand his father Barry Shenkman were confirmed at KI. Barry’s mother Rae Kirsch andher family, Harry Kirsch and Elsie Simons, were KI members. Rae’s siblings wereconfirmed at KI in 1934 and 1940. Arlen remembers his grandparents talking aboutKI when it was at the Broad Street location, and how it has been the place whereeveryone in his family, “learned to be Jewish”. Arlen, his wife Marijke and theirchildren find enjoyment in the community and feel at home at KI. May 4th - 7th, 2017 JANE COHEN SCHWARTZ AND CAREY SCHWARTZ ROSEMAN AND ROBERT ROSEMANMother and daughter Jane Cohen Schwartz and Carey Schwartz Roseman havebeen blessed with a long and memorable connection to KI. Jane’s grandparents,Jennie and Samuel Smith, joined KI, with their children, Nathan (Janice Bers’ father)and Carrie (Jane’s mother) who were raised there. Carrie and I. Edward Cohen weremarried at KI in 1922 by Rabbi Krauskopf. Jane, who was confirmed at KI in 1939,married Howard Schwartz in 1945 by Rabbi Fineshriber. Jane fondly remembersher close relationship with Rabbi Korn, attending Sunday School, her Confirmation,chairing the committee that opened a Tot Lot for city children and traveling to Israelwith Rabbi Maslin. Carey, who has ably carried on that KI devotion, credits KI for hercommitment at an early age to social action, from tutoring high school students tonow at Lowell Elementary. She remembers Rabbi Korn opening the bima to all whowanted to speak during the Vietnam War. Carey and Robert Roseman were marriedat KI in 1983; Rabbi Maslin officiated. Their children, Ian and Hallie, who are 5thgeneration KI, attended KI’s Preschool, and celebrated their B’nai Mitzvah andConfirmations at KI. Carey went on to become KI President which she proudlyundertook from 2004-2007. JOHN AND ANNE SOLIS-COHENJohn Solis-Cohen is a member of a long-time KI family. His great-great grandfatherDr. Solomon Solis-Cohen married his cousin Emily Grace Solis, and their commongrandfather was Jacob daSilva Solis who emigrated to the U.S. in the Colonial period.John is the son of Solomon and Barbara Solis-Cohen II. Upon Solomon’s death in1975, Barbara married Harry Blatt. PhyllisKronheimer and Alfred Goldsmith, Lois’s parents were married at KI in 1931. Alfredgenerously donated the funds to purchase KI sanctuary’s Phyllis K. Goldsmith organ,and then established a fund to maintain it. Lois and Jeremy were both confirmedat KI (Jeremy in 1949; Lois in 1951). They were then married at KI in 1955.
