Mornings at the Meyers Library are brightened by the smiling faces of a multi-national and multi-ethnic group of happy, bouncy 2-5 year-olds from our Richard E. Rudolph Preschool. They squirm into comfortable positions on the floor or in their beanbag chairs and listen eagerly to stories read by ‘Miss Ellen’ our librarian. If you ask the children what they like about coming to the library, they answer: ‘looking at books’, ‘reading about animals’, and especially they like being read to by ‘Miss Ellen’. The library collection of children’s books has almost 3,000 juvenile picture and chapter books, and over 200 young adult books representing a diverse range of fiction and non-fiction materials dealing with Jewish themes and holidays. Many are Children’s Book Award winners, and all are carefully selected to appeal to children of diverse backgrounds and religions. For these young children, their weekly visit to the KI library is an introduction to the love of literature. When they borrow a book to take home and then return it, they are also developing a sense of responsibility. Our future is secure with the children in our KI preschool.
