In my view, thedevelopment of Torah was complex, slow and has many On the other hand, in the ancient world there were alsocomponents. Let me explain. professional oracles, diviners and prophets. True prophets in the Personally, I believe some of the material in Torah grewout of extremely ancient oral traditions, especially the ancient world were not viewed as psychotics who heard voices butmore mythic components of Torah. Let’s call this class of rather as credible spokesmen of cosmic truth. In ancient Israel, there was a professional class of prophets although they were not a guild, dynastic or trained to prophesy. Leaving the question of a historic Moses aside, it is clear from the Torah (and subsequently reinforced by others) that the revelation to Moses as depicted in the text was unique, face to face and during waking consciousness. All the other prophets hear God through dreams and visions, a different level of information than the supreme Prophet. So, if there was a Moses who heard God, did Moses hear words or, as the later prophet Elijah suggested, Moses heard God in silence? Even the mechanics of revelation remain a mystery. Perhaps when the rabbis later conceded,“Torah speaks in human language,” they were referring both to the experience and dissemination of Torah. It is also important to note that modern Biblical scholarship has long held that prophetic literature began as solely oral, later included the writing down of oracles and ultimately was created as written literature. Subsequently, a complex editorial process began in which aggregators brought together the many types of prophetic literature and created books of prophecy and Biblical wisdom. ese books, in turn, were edited by final redactors who rendered them into the form we have today. WorshipShavuot Shavuot is a Hebrew word meaning “weeks.” TheTorah tells us ittook 49 days for our ancestors to travel from Egypt to the foot of MountSinai where they were to receive theTorah. Leviticus 23:21 commands:“And you shall proclaim that day (the 50th day) to be a holy convocation!”The name Shavuot symbolizes the completion of the seven-week journey.Theholiday is also known as the Festival of the Giving of theTorah. Special customs on Shavuot are the reading of the Book of Ruth. Anothertradition includes staying up all night to studyTorah, called Tikkun Leil Shavuot, which symbolizes our commitment to theTorah, and that we are always readyand awake to receive theTorah. Dairy dishes are served on the holiday tosymbolize the sweetness of theTorah, as well as the “land of milk and honey.” For more information consult www.urj.org or visit the Meyers Library.May Worship ScheduleFriday, May 5 Saturday, May 6 Bar Mitzvah of Bar Mitzvah of Jordan Saturday, May 27Shabbat Aharei 9:00 a.m.Torah Study Zachary Cameron Isaac Gershman 9:00 a.m.Torah StudyMot-Kedoshim - 10:30 a.m. Shabbat Fajge 2:00 p.m. Rydal Park 10:30 a.m. ShabbatLeviticus 16:1 Morning Service Shabbat Morning Service8:00 p.m. 170th Friday, May 19 5:00 p.m. HavdalahAnniversary Shabbat Friday, May 12 Shabbat Behar- Service Tuesday, May 30Evening Service Shabbat Emor – Behukotai, Bat Mitzvah of Laina 7:30 p.m. Shavuot/ Leviticus 21:1 Leviticus 25:1 Rose Snellenburg Confirmation 8:00 p.m.Women of 7:00 p.m. Family Services KI Shabbat Evening Shabbat Service Friday, May 26 Consecration of 6th & Service Shabbat B’Midbar – 9th grade students Saturday, May 20 Numbers 1:1 Saturday, May 13 9:00 a.m.Torah Study 8:00 p.m. Shabbat Wednesday, May 31 9:00 a.m.Torah Study 10:30 a.m. Shabbat Evening Service 10:30 a.m. Shavuot and 10:30 a.m. Shabbat Morning Service Confirmation Service Morning Service(cont’d from page 3) language of Reform Jewish theology, revelation of the meaning of e great early 20th century Jewish existentialist Torah is ongoing, progressive and dynamic. Lifelong LearningA Treasured Cup Comes HomeBy Rita Rosen Poley As we celebrate 170 years of KI history I want to share a story of how a lost artifact came home. One morning in 2013, Brian Rissinger, our esteemed Executive Director, asked me to come to his office. He excitedly told me that he had discovered, on-line, that a silver presentation cup would soon be auctioned at RAGO Auction House in Lambertville, NJ. at gorgeous cup was, apparently, an 1864 gift from Keneseth Israel to its first organist, WilliamFischer. A hymnal, compiled by Fischer especially for KI, was already in our collection but, in general, objects associated with theearly years of KI’s history are rare and preciously few. Knowing that, and after discussion with KI leadership, Brian and I agreedto attend the auction and try to purchase the cup. Bidding was fierce but we were successful, in large part because of the generousfinancial support of Miriam Finkel and Herb Altman. So, who was William Fischer? Mr. William Fischer was the Choir Director and Organist for Keneseth Israel from May 1856to June 1877, twenty-one years. He wrote songs for the prayers, compiled a hymnal, led the choir and arranged for maintenance ofthe pipe organ. e following notes were compiled by Brian Rissinger, KI Executive Director, from e KI Archives, from the minutes ofmeetings of the KI Board of Directors., NOTE: e minutes were originally in German. A few years later they were translatedinto English by Eve Mennies’ mother, Margaret Schonwetter.Board Minutes: May 11, 1856“Several applicants for the post of organist and choir director were heard and Mr. Fischer was unanimously selected. It was determinedthat Mr. Fischer should be engaged with a salary of $250.00 as an organist and choir director with the understanding that he has to takecare to engage the fitting voices, and songs, the notes for the organ, the printing of the music with no extra pay and it remains the propertyof the congregation.”History of Keneseth Israel: e First 100 Years – Page 10“ e first step towards reform in the services was taken in September of 1855 when it was decided to install an organ. A Mr. Fischerwas hired as first organist and shortly thereafter a mixed choir was organized. e initial step towards Reform had been taken and othersfollowed in rapid succession.”Board Minutes: March 24, 1858A petition from Wm. Fischer was handed in and read as follows:“To the Board of Directors of the Israelic Temple Congregation Keneseth Israel! Gentlemen! With the conviction that a humble petitionwill find friendly consideration I permit myself the following: In a few weeksmy contract year with you as an organist comes to an end. Since I think, and I am convinced that I worked, I hope, to your satisfaction. I can’t bearthe thought, that somebody else will reap what I sowed, namely, all the workand the pains I put in building up the liturgy for the service. is job is dearto my heart now and I want to make this proposal: to the honorable boardof directors should renew my contract for the next year without advertisingthe vacancy, an improvement in my salary will follow, as soon as thecongregation grew enough and the present difficulties are mastered. Moneyhas a great value, but appreciation and friendly treatment has more. Pleaseremember me to the families who wish to have excellent music lessons and Iwill be grateful and will do my duty. Respectfully yours, Wilhelm Fischer”It was decided to renew the contract of Mr. Fischer. September 1864 – decision to present a silver cup to Mr. Fischer and$300. In the Minutes it is recorded that a resolution was passed to givehim a silver commemorative cup and that the cup was to be purchasedfrom Bailey and Co. for $115! However it happened that this beautiful, historical treasure waspreserved throughout all these years, we continue to celebrate itshomecoming, as we, as a congregation, celebrate the history ofthe KI family.Suppor t KI! KI Archives/KIPAHKI 170 Discovery: Four KI Families Descended From an 18th Century German Rabbi,Josef Jonas Ben MayerBy Jack A Myers, KI Archivist In the process of constructing about two dozen family trees to document KI’s hundred year families, I found that there wereseveral which overlapped with either common ancestors or common cousins. My personal surprise was that four other currentKI members share with me a direct lineage tracing back to Rabbi Josef Jonas ben Mayer of Altenstadt, Bavaria. Other KI families’ancestors are rooted in this region, Swabian Bavaria, which includes towns such as Fellheim, Osterberg, Ichenhausen, andHuerben-Krumbach. Rabbi Josef Jonas ben Mayer was the first of three generations of Mayer rabbis that served Altenstadt and the adjacentcommunities. His son, Rabbi Abraham Josef Mayer in fact married the daughter of Rabbi Simcha Bunem Rappaport; he from avery long line of rabbis stretching back six more generations to Moshe Yirmiyahu Rapaport haGaon (circa 1550-1580.) e discovery of cousins was not a total surprise. I’ve been researching my family heritage since the 1970’s and while teachingat KI, introduced my students to the process as well. Two of today’s KI members were on my family tree and in fact, the motherof one and the aunt of another were among those who were resources to me some time ago. I was thrilled when last September, while doing a program in the KI Library, Florence Deutcher introduced herself to me as the daughter of Marion Rothman who Ihad spoken with at least 25 years ago. I was surprised to realize that Carol Schwartz and her daughter Julie Ginsberg (and her teenage children) were my cousins.Carol’s brother, Alan Monheit, and I were confirmed at KI in 1965, and I assure you we were not aware of the family connection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uppor t KI!
