From the Bimah Mah Nishtana: What Are Your Jewish Questions? Rabbi’s Message Passover is coming and there is a lot to do for those hosting and running Seders! This year, however, I would like to give everyone a pre-Passover assignment. It is based on one of the most beloved parts of Seder itself —The Four Questions! The Four Questions are included in the Passover Seder to meet the requirement of the Torah which states, “that you are to tell (Haggadah) your children” about the Exodus from Egypt. The rabbis of old took this mandate very seriously and therefore made sure there were many child-specific aspects of the Passover celebration. At the same time, the early rabbis (Tanna-im) taught that everyone of every age is also required to participate in the Seder and the telling of the Passover story. The original Four Questions, “Mah Nishtana,” are pedagogical in their intent. They are designed to teach and review many of the basic elements of the Seder. According to Ashkenazic tradition, first is the question of why do we dip and, more challenging, why do we dip twice. For those who are not sure how to answer this question the first dip (karpas into salt water) is to recall Joseph’s coat being dipped (into blood) by his brothers and the second dip is remembering that the Hebrews dipped hyssop branches into blood and then applied the blood to the doors of the Hebrews. The second question asks, why do Rabbi Lance J. we eat matzah instead of bread? Third is the eating of a bitter herb and finally, Number Four, why do we Sussman, Ph.D. recline at the Seder? My sense is that at most Seders the Questions are both sung and discussed! This year I would like to use the idea and structure of The Four Questions for a Passover warm-up exercise. I want to ask you, “What are your four Jewish Questions?” Jewish life is always in transition. Different times and different places require unique adaptations of the Jewish tradition. Before we adapt, however, we have to ask questions about what tradition is asking us to do and why. Sometimes these questions are personal, sometimes institutional, sometimes philosophical and sometimes historical. Here are the Four Questions that I am asking myself this year: 1. What aspects of the Jewish tradition do I really believe in? Do I believe in God? What kind of God? Do I pray to God or are my prayers more a spiritual exercise for myself ? 2. What does Torah mean to me? Do I believe the Torah was given at Sinai or is it a more human document? What authority does the Torah have over me in my life? 3. Which of the 613 commandments are “living commandments” to me? How do I distinguish between the general, ethical commandments and the specifically Jewish commandments? Which of the Jewish commandments do I feel I absolutely must do? Do I really do them? 4. What is the role of synagogue in my life? Why is it important to support a synagogue? What would the Jewish community be like if it had no synagogues? What can I do to make my synagogue better, stronger, more complete? Of course, there are other questions. In fact, if you want to send me your Four Questions, I would love to hear from you at [email protected]. As always, before we have answers we must have good questions. I want to hear yours! Passover tells the story of our people being liberated from Egyptian slavery. Passover is the Jewish story that we tell over and over again each year. Passover provides the moral basis of Judaism and constantly reminds us not to oppress the stranger, “because you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” This year, when you gather with family and friends for Passover, enjoy, celebrate, learn and, in the best Jewish tradition, ask questions! A Happy, Healthy Passover and Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Lance J. Sussman, Ph.D. SAVE Friday, April 3, 2020 at 8:00 PM THESE Rabbi Sussman will speak on Anti-Semitism post-Shabbat service DATES! Youth and Education JQuest The Power of a Single Story B’Yachad Recently our 8th and 9th Graders watched “The Danger of a Single Story,” a 2009 TED Talk by Chimamanda Adichie, a Nigerian author. In the TED talk, she shares her personal experience with extrapolating from only one narrative, and then how she is confronted when people do not understand her because of their own single narratives. The TED talk reminds us that if we do not see out multiple stories we make assumptions about people, policies, and beliefs. I have been thinking about this a lot as we head towards Passover. Passover, more than any other holiday, commands that we all tell a single story. (Purim commands that we listen to a single story). Part of this command is the desire for people, especially Rabbi Stacy children to ask questions, but those that are answering were not Eskovitz Rigler, actually witnesses to the story. Director of How has our narrative around being slaves in Egypt, around Religious being victims, and around working with God to be redeemers Education shaped who we are as a people? How does that connect to our present realities, where most of us are not victims or targets most of the time? Where most of us experience privilege and comfort? This year in JQuest and in Quest Noar, we have tried to share multiple stories of oppression and redemption. Our students recently participated in a day of learning around racial issues and being insiders vs. outsiders, they learned more about the environment, our teens focused on anti-Semitism as well as racism and reproductive rights and our 10th graders lobbied in Washington for Disability Rights and Environmental Activism. No matter what your story, we all see injustice in our world. This year we are trying to help our students respond to an issue they feel passionate about and to broaden their worldview, to hear multiple stories. As Passover approaches may you do the same. Preschool Be Happy, It’s Adar! We are also looking forward to Passover next News month, one of our busiest times in preschool.
