DADDYTRIBUTE TO In the beginning, you were “Uncle Joy.” JOY It is a common name to give a random older Ghanaian male to show respect. Then you married my mum, you became family. But I did not know you well, so you became “Joy.” As time went by, it was hard to ignore your support and acceptance of me. But I still did not accept that your love was unconditional; so, as I waited for the other shoe to drop, you became “D.J.” (Daddy Joy) Time passed; I watched you make my mother happier than she had ever been. She found her “person” in you. I watched you care and support your children like there was nothing else to do. What made it more beautiful was that you let me experience that type of love. You gave me the best older sisters a girl could ask for and the sweetest baby brother. Then, without any doubt in my mind, without any guilt or shame, you became “Daddy”. You were God’s gift to me, my sister, and my mother. I love you, Daddy. May you rest in peace, love and most importantly, JOY. With love, Maame. 16 JOY KWAME CUDJOE 1961-2023
O n your birthday this year, we as a DADDYTRIBUTE TO family, got to tell you how we felt about you. I’m personally grateful for that moment especially, since it wasn’t something we really did. We’re more of a “show your love by action family” than words. I got to express how much you meant to me. During the period that I experienced you, you were kind, patient, a man of few words and very loving. Some of the good moments I remember are, you giving Nutifafa a nice whuping, and you finding and embracing my love for tomtom! Anytime mummy was upset about something you’d just sit there with an assuring smile that says, “it’s okay”. I fondly recall you making me fry a whole lot of plantain because you wanted a few pieces to snack on and many others….. You were always there, very present. You’ll be missed greatly. I hope you’re okay up there and you’re cheering us on down here because as you can see it is not easy. I love you. Try not to send the angels on too many errands to get you tuo zaafi. He took a genuine interest in me, treating me like a son, and for that, I am eternally grateful. When Eli, who is now my beloved wife, introduced me to him, he welcomed me into their home, and I felt truly blessed. Daddy J’s kindness knew no bounds, and his love and acceptance have left an indelible mark on my heart. Little did I know that his hospitality and special treatment would continue until his passing. Although I was unaware that our time together would be brief, I am immensely grateful for the privilege of knowing him. It brings me solace to remember that we celebrated his birthday together just recently, cherishing those precious moments before his departure from this world. The words from the Book of Kings, 1 Kings 5:4, resonate deeply as I reflect on Daddy J’s life. Your earthly struggles have come to an end, dear Daddy, and now you can rest. Your labor in the Lord has not been in vain, for in heaven, an even greater reward awaits you. Rest in perfect peace, Daddy J. Your memory will forever live on in our hearts, and your legacy of love, respect, and quiet strength will continue to inspire us. Thank you for being the remarkable man that you were—a father, a friend, and a guiding light. Until we meet again, may your soul find eternal tranquility in the embrace of the Divine Lord. A very TRIBUTE FROM hard IN-TAKE 83 working and top OF FORMER COMMANDO discipline UNIT OF GHANA ARMED FORCES soldier The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away. The Lord is always close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Comrade Joy Cudjoe was recruited into the Ghana Armed Forces in October 1983. After a short basic military training, he was among the comrades who were short listed to continue their training in Cuba. In Cuba, Joy was part of the team that specialized in Artillery Guns and heavy weapons. Being an intelligent soldier, he was made number 1 in his crew. A position he held until he returned to Ghana. Joy was a humble person, a good listener, a good counsellor, advisor and a man of principle. A very hard working and top discipline soldier. In the Armed Forces, he decided to acquire a profession so he was sent to the Military and Transport School, where he was trained as a military driver. He cherished his driving in addition to his artillery speciality. During his civil life, he always associated with us as his comrades, until we also came home on retirement. In fact, the news of his death was a shock to all of us. Your working family and friends will miss you but cannot forget the traits of kindness, love, humility, passion and many others they learnt from you. As our motto says: Esprit de corps, Together we shall live Together we shall build Peace, Unity and Solidarity. O lose not heart, I don’t wanna say: can I go back to do some more I don’t wanna say I wanna go back But learn what God is like, When you get to heaven And in the darkest battle- field You’ll see your friends and the folks from church Thou shalt know where to strike. The first will be last Thrice blest is he to whom is given And then the last will be the first And I hope you’ll be among the last The instinct that can tell Who become the first That God is on the field when He I hope you never say you regret the way you lived I hope you never say you wanna go back Is most invisible. You don’t wanna say: could you go back to do some more For god is other than we think; You don’t wanna say you wanna go back His ways are far above, IF YOU COULD SEE ME NOW Far beyond reason’s height, and reached If you could see me now You wouldn’t believe how things have changed for me I’m Only by childlike love. walking on the streets of gold Then learn to scorn the praise of man, Enjoying my crowns and my rewards If you could see me now And learn to lose with God; I’m in heaven and it’s really really nice oh yeah For Jesus worn the world through shame, Everything we read and everything we believed Has come to pass, it’s like a dream And beckons thee His road. My friends I left behind For right is right, since God is God, Don’t cry as though you have no hope Know that the word of God is true And right the day must win; To live is Christ, to die is gain To doubt would be disloyalty, I gained a new and a better life Better than the life I lived on earth To falter would be sin. oh oh ooh oh oh oh oh mmm If you could see me now WHEN I GET TO HEAVEN You wouldn’t believe how things have changed for me I am When I get to heaven in my mansion in heaven Enjoying my crowns and my rewards I’ll take my seat on a lonely bench If you could see me now By the fields of heaven I’m in heaven and it’s really really nice Everything we read and everything we believed mmm Has I’ll sit and think about my life come to pass, it’s like a dream The life I lived, the things I did See I was scared when I was called it was time for my judgment The places I went But it wasn’t that bad after all I hope I never say I regret the way I lived I was forgiven for all my mistakes I hope I never say: please let me go back Many good points for all my good works I’m much happier I don’t wanna say: can I go back to do some more I don’t wanna say I wanna go back When I get to heaven I’ll roam the streets and the highways I’ll walk the lanes I’ll see the heroes of the faith Compare myself to those who shine Like the stars and receive the crown 28 JOY KWAME CUDJOE 1961-2023
