Nice job everyone! Our Debra Hendren presented at last week’s HomelessSummit about securing state ID and vital documents Debra Hendren, our director of Community Programs and Outreach, and Elizabeth Kelly, executive director of Hope Hospitality and Warming Center, presented the “Secur- ing State ID & Vital Documents: Update on Gaining State ID and other Vital Documents” session at the Homeless Summit last week. This session was a follow-up on the achievements of local and state partners which included the Secretary of State pilot exception program model, local fee waivers/reductions for vital documents with the coun- ty clerks’ offices, and the SSA’s recent change in policy to accept HMIS cards as a form of identification for social security cards. They also covered costs of items and help- ful tips when navigating the system on behalf of program participants. Advocacy continues to be important, especially with changes to the Secretary of State process to comply with the Real ID Act. Changes were made to the acceptable documents beginning in September 2017. They continue to work with state partners on adding some of the docu- ments/processes used in the exception program to become mainstream, as well as to develop funding for fee waivers/ reductions for state ID and for obtaining vital documents at the state level. For those that are interested, they also kicked off a cam- paign to continue this advocacy with a letter penned by the State ID taskforce that is originating with MCAH. This letter can be signed on at bit.ly/IDSignOn CHN has signed on as an agency but those who feel strongly about it, can also sign on as an individual. Please continue to Page 5
