However, there is no denying the fact thatthere is no spectacle on earth more appealing than that of a family cooking food forsomeone they love and sitting together to share the meal. When I look at the children of today slurping instant and ready-made food everyday, I feel that the day is not far when all that will be left of our traditional cookingwill be stories and ancient theories. Indian food is a blend of cross-cultural cuisineswherein every state has its own traditional dishes, but most children are consumingthe same instant noodles, pastas, pizzas, burgers or sandwiches at least once a day, thanks to the massive influence of international food joints that have robbed theenthusiasm towards our traditional tastes and flavours. Would you believe that pizzarobberies are commonly done by children and adolescents in Noida? Most cases arenot even reported because witnesses say, “Pizza hi to hai.”(It is just a pizza.) Pathetic! Parents too find such fast foods as the quick and inexpensive option. However, inpursuit of good health, parents must try to be innovative to make their daily foodnutritionally more interesting and appealing. They should not only try cooking newdishes at home but also involve children in the kitchen to make them understandwhat ‘real’ food is made of. As parents and elders, we need to educate our children as they are not aware ofthe long-term health effects due to the presence of sodium, salt, sugar, oil, artificialsweeteners, added monosodium glutamate, China grass, refined wheat flour, transfats, high fructose corn syrup, caffeine, phosphoric acid, lead, ash, pesticides andmany other ingredients in very high quantities in most of the foods and beveragessold outside. Adding to this, studies in Hyderabad reported that even our favouriteroadside pani puris and fruit juices are dangerous as well, as they are contaminatedwith various fungus and bacteria such as E. coli, salmonella, klebsiella, pseudomonas, staphylococci and enterrococci. Keeping the nutrition aside, do you know that food can affect a child’s relationshipwith the mother? If you recollect the sambar advertisement that reminds a manof his mother, you will notice that a person’s memories with his mother are linkedto the food she had cooked during his childhood. Along with all her love, pain andsacrifices, her food is permanently recorded in her child’s mind. So, it is our earnest intention that parents and children minimize their dependenceon outside food and utilize their free time to try out new dishes at home. Afterall, food is mankind’s first necessity. With a healthy body, a stable mind and yourvaluable presence, is there something your child cannot achieve?Welcome to the first issue of Student Mag. – Editor How to Subscribe For subscription, contact:Swan Edulabs Pvt. THE STORY OF EVENTS OF THE MONTHA LANTERN A young prince lived with his father, a caliph. His step-mother was not kind to him and his father also did not love him. So, the prince told his pet, “As no one cares, let us run away from this place.” They saw a phantom’s palace in the jungle. The prince said, “This is very scary, but we are hungry and cold. We must rest.” He immediately fell asleep on a bed. Later, he found himself in a prison. The phantom said, “I know everything about you. Your father doesn’t love you. As I am alone, you will live here as my pet”. The prince requested the phantom not to keep him as his pet. Then the phantom said, “I will let your pigeon go and inform your father. If he loves you, he will come to save you. Else, you will stay with me forever”. The pigeon quickly flew back to the caliph’s house. The caliph prayed and cried everyday to see his son before the end of the Ramadan. The pigeon told him about his son. He decided to follow the pigeon to the phantom’s palace. It was dark outside. With the help of his sister and the villagers, the road was lit with candles for him. Everyone followed him singing joyful songs to celebrate the beginning of the Ramadan. On hearing the songs, the prince knew that his father had come. The Phantom was touched and said, “You can go with your father who is given a second chance.” The prince, with his father, then fasted the whole month of Ramadan. The caliph gifted golden lanterns to all the villagers and asked them to colourfully light up the mosques and the entire streets. From then onwards, celebrating the holy month of Ramadan began with lighting up the lanterns.June 9 - Kabirdas Jayanthi June 25 - Jagannath Rath Yatra June 26 - RamzanJUNE 5World JUNE1 World Milk Day Environment Day Activity 1 Activity 2 Get the kids to moo like a cow and have a mooing contest in their class Get the kidsJUtoNEmoo like a cow, itself. LSRW SKILLS ListeningSpeakingACTIVITY 13 DESCRIBE THE WORD For this activity, get the students to pair up and let them each draw something they like by giving them color pencils and crayons. You can also give them pictures, whichever works better. For the first round, give one person from the pair a picture and the second person just a piece of plain paper. Now make the student with the picture dictate how to draw that picture to the partner. Once round one is finished, let the students change their roles and carry it out with the other student. Make sure that there is no peeking around or cheating. This helps them understand how to listen and comprehend what is being told to them. In the end, check which of the team has the most similar pictures to the ones they have been given. Reward them with a gift to feel appreciated. ACTIVITY 14 WHO IS TELLING THE TRUTH? Give the children a piece of paper and ask them to write something about themselves, which probably no one knows, be it their favorite color, etc. Once they are done with this, get two or three of them to come forward in the class and ask them to read out what they have written. The sheets need to be collected before this. Now, read out one of the facts which may be true for one of the students and ask the class to tell whether it is true or not. One student is allowed to ask only one question or statement to the other to know whether he is telling the truth or not. This removes the fear of speaking the truth from the minds of the children and makes the whole environment more interactive. 12

ACTIVITY 15 CATEGORY WRITING GAMEWriting Divide the class into groups, with each group having 3 or 4 students. Ask each of the groups to choose a captain for them, who will be the person who does the writing. Now, they will require a pen and a p a p e r for the activity. The teacher should write down a cer- tain category on the board, such as animals, colors or games. The group then works as a team and tells the captain one word from the catego- ry. Give the team 2 or 3 minutes to come up with the words in the cate- gory. The more words they come up with, the better it is. The group that writes the most number of words wins. You can give one point for one word. The captains can be switched at each round and each category so that each child gets the chance to write. Also, make sure to check their spelling, before giving them points. Reward and appreciate the kids for their effort.ACTIVITY 16 VOCABULARY BINGO For this activity, you will require pens, paper, Bingo chips and a vocabulary list. Building Reading up a child’s vocabulary is important to develop their reading skills, especially from class 1 onwards. List some of the important words and get your child to discuss their meanings. Write the words in the boxes and distribute the chips to the students. The definitions then become the bingo cues for them to play with. When they have one complete line straight or diagonal done by placing the chips on the word that matches the definition, tell them to shout “Bingo”. Reward them with presents when done. You can then switch the cards and play again as well. This interesting twist to the game “bingo” will help in preparing your child for the challenges which he or she will come across in their reading. 13

HUMAN BODY WHAT IS THE REASON FOR WISDOMTEETH?We all know that we get a wisdom tooth after a certain age, but many do not know the exact reason as towhy we have them or how did they originate. It is believedthat we have evolved from a species known as hominidswho had longer jaws in order to eat raw meat and plants. Therefore, we get wisdom teeth only after a certain age, asour jaw lines need to grow enough to have room for them. However, in today’s world they are not really needed; neither do we have large jaw lines to accommodate them.
