C) STAFF'S NEWS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS We regret to inform you of the passing of Mr. Krishendath Sankar, of the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering who passed away on 26th July, 2020. Mr. Sankar began his career in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering in January 1988 where he worked in a temporary capacity as a Technical Assistant 1. He became a permanent member of staff in October 1998. He worked as a Technician in the Biosystems Laboratory until the time of his passing. 5|Page MME Newsletter July 2020, Vol.6 Issue 2

2. Dr. Chris Maharaj Has Been Recognised Excellence in Teaching The UF&GPC meeting received and approved the recommendation of the Selection committee for the Vice- Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence. Congratulations go to Dr. Chris Maharaj who has been recognised excellence in teaching, and is one of the 2019/2020 awardees. The award ceremony will be held later this year. 3. Dr. Cilla Pemberton became a Director of the Society of Caribbean Industrial Engineers In recognition of her leadership and committed services to the Society of Caribbean Industrial Engineers (SCIE), Dr. Cilla Pemberton has been appointed as a Director of the Society of Caribbean Industrial Engineers, commencing from July 2020. 4. Professor Kit Fai Pun Became the President of the Chapter of the Caribbean Academy of Science The election of the Trinidad and Tobago Chapter of the Caribbean Academy of Science (CAS-TT) Executive elections has been made in July 2020. Congratulations to the new Executive Committee, and Professor Kit Fai Pun has been elected as the President of the CASTT Chapter, commencing from 1st August 2020. 5. Professor Kit Fai Pun, the Emerald Brand Ambassador Professor Kit Fai Pun has been appointed as the Emerald Brand Ambassador (Emerald Publishing, Latin America and Caribbean), commencing from 1st September 2020. Ms. Donna Ramkissoon Upgraded her Registration to PhD Degree in Industrial Engineering On 17th April, 2020 The Chair, Board for Graduate Studies and Research, on behalf of the Board has approved the recommendation to upgrade Ms. Donna Ramkissoon’s registration from the M.Phil. to the Ph.D. Industrial Engineering with effect from Semester I of the 2019/2020 Academic year. 2. Annex 1: Introducing The UWI-MSc Engineering Asset Management Programme Annex-1: Introducing The UWI-MSc Engineering Asset Management Programme and Short Courses/Presentations Engineering Asset Management (EAM) is an emerging inter-disciplinary field that combines and optimises the technical issues of asset reliability, maintenance, safety and asset performance with the requisite financial and managerial skills. The emphasis of EAM is to achieve sustainable business outcomes and competitive advantages by applying holistic, systematic and risk-based processes to critical thinking and root cause analysis decisions concerning an organisation's physical assets, including its fixed plant, mobile equipment and it’s civil, electrical and mechanical infrastructure. The MSc-EAM programme being offered at The University of the West Indies (UWI) is designed for Engineers aiming to become Maintenance and Reliability practitioners, and is essential for Engineers and Managers who are responsible for plant maintenance and reliability including projects in manufacturing, utilities, energy engineering and the engineering service industries. On completion of the programme the Graduates will be suitable for engineering management positions, who shall be capable of efficiently and effectively managing the physical assets of their organisations. Aims and Objectives: The objective of the MSc-EAM programme is to provide industry with competent engineers capable of the acquisition, operation/ maintenance, and disposition of the physical assets of the organisations. This programme is designed to meet The UWI’s Strategic Plan to provide industry with trained personnel in the area of Asset Management to support their growth and competiveness. The specific objective of this programme of study is to allow graduates in Engineering and Science to strengthen and enhance their capabilities in EAM relating to the acquisition, operation/maintenance, and disposal of plant and equipment. On completion of the programme, participants will be able to: • Develop, deploy and evaluate strategic plans for physical assets in creating and sustaining a competitive edge, • Formulate maintenance objectives to support corporate / operations objectives and strategies, • Develop and implement maintenance plans and programs to achieve maintenance objectives 10 | P a g e MME Newsletter July 2020, Vol.6 Issue 2

• Prepare and implement annual budgetary control systems, • Select and implement effective maintenance technologies, • Design and deploy organisational structures, processes, and procedures for managing physical assets, • Develop and implement work systems to achieve effective use of human resources, • Plan and schedule maintenance work to optimise resources, • Develop measurement and reporting systems for assessment of performance of assets and operations, • Formulate and execute long and medium term plans for improvement in asset performance, • Apply analytical and optimisation models to support decision making, • Plan and control major plant overhauls and turnarounds, • Select and use computerised maintenance management systems effectively, and • Improve asset reliability and maintainability on a continuous basis. The programme coordinator, Mr Kishore Jhagroo, indicates that the MSc-EAM programme has matured to the position where Graduates are now more “Industry Ready” mainly due to the intervention of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), with over 30 years of field experience, in the lecture sessions and the use of short courses, some delivered by the authors of the books used in the programme. For these SME presentations and short courses, students are invited to bring along their managers and technicians, in reliability and maintenance, so that these stakeholders can share in some of the taught MSc material and thus together develop the critical thinking and root cause analysis capabilities necessary to optimally manage the industry’s assets. Additionally presentations are delivered in the industry to synergise the taught material and the practical issues. In support of these initiatives, EAM students are required to develop a professional journal which is designed to capture all of the EAM concepts which they learn from the lecture sessions, SME presentations and short courses.
