3. Upcoming DMME-EAM Seminars 2019 The Department’s MSc Engineering Asset Management (EAM) group and the Engineering Institute are currently offering industry-aligned short courses in the second semester of the 2018/2019 academic year. The aim of these short courses is to allow Engineers who are not able at this time to read for the EAM-MSc programme and the non-Engineers who do not qualify to read for this MSc course to get an opportunity to experience and learn about the optimisation of Maintenance and Reliability systems in the Industry. Besides, our students will be able to interact with these other participants of the short courses and thus experience some real life industrial Case Studies. Professor A.K.S. Jardine, the University of Toronto would expound material in the area of ‘Maintenance Analysis and Optimisation’. Professor Rickey Dubay, the University of New Brunswick would make Skype presentation on ‘Artificial Intelligence in Industrial Systems’. Similar provisions would be offered by Dr. Greg Buscarello, Certified Vibration Analyst and by Mr. Doc Palmer, Atlanta-USA. They would talk about ‘Vibration Analysis’ and ‘Maintenance Planning and Scheduling’, respectively. The topic of ‘Maintenance Optimisation and Turnarounds’ will be presented by Mr. Kishore Jhagroo, Coordinator of the MSc EAM Programme. For an information flyer of The 2019 MME-EAM Short Course Roster, see Annex-3. 4. External Examiner Professor Prasanta Kumar Dey's Visit, 11th - 16th April, 2019 Professor Prasanta Kumar Dey of Aston University, Birmingham, UK, will be visiting the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, in his capacity as one of our external examiners from April 11th to 16th, 2019. Professor Dey had once worked for five (5) years at The University of the West Indies in Barbados as Director of the Project Management Graduate Programme. He has published more than one hundred research papers in leading international journals, and has worked extensively with industry and the public sector, completing projects in supply chain optimisation in both Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and large sectors. 13 | P a g e MME Newsletter January 2019, Vol.5 Issue 1
Professor Dey has delivered long term executive development programmes and facilitated workshops for executives in the Barbados Government, and private sector clients ranging from JCB and Jaguar to CEMEX and L’Oreal. He has worked to provide solutions to many challenges faced by developing country SMEs. During his visit, the Department is going to host/organise a seminar/workshop in ‘Supply Chain Management with applications for T&T industry’. Other topics and issues surrounding ‘Public Procurement’ in light of the impending proclamation of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Goods Act., could be explored. Collaborations with the Society for Caribbean Industrial Engineers (SCIE) and the Trinidad & Tobago Chamber of Commerce (TTCC) in jointly organising the seminar/workshop is being considered. Update of Professor Dey’s visit and arrangement will be available shortly within the department’s internal mail. 5. The DMME Conference and Exhibition 2019 - to be held in May 2019 Following the success of the past-years’ similar events, the Department is pleased to host its 2019 Annual Conference and Exhibition in the month of May. It is intended to demonstrate how the work of the Department (staff and students) aligns with the national economic development needs. This is in line with the University’s ‘Triple A’ strategic plan, which has as its headline theme “Revitalising Caribbean Development”. This show-case event will display the Department’s BSc Capstone Projects and selected MSc and MPhil/PhD research projects and presentations. Those based in Business, Industry and Agriculture, Government Services, schools, Faculty members and students of the university community are all cordially invited. For enquiry, please contact the MME Department, phone: 662 2002 ext-82070 or e-mail: [email protected]. \"Revitalising Caribbean Development\" 14 | P a g e MME Newsletter January 2019, Vol.5 Issue 1

For the Afternoon programme, Ms. Ambika Koonj-Beharry and Professor Kit Fai Pun of UWI chaired the two Sessions with Sub-Theme V: Engineering Entrepreneurship and Industry 4.0 and Sub-Theme VI: Industrial Engineering the Future. Presentations of nine technical papers were carded. Two Photo album links for the 2-Day Conference, https://photos.app.goo.gl/ttBJoofNJi1x5oah8 and https://photos.app.goo.gl/Ef6eQgFWDd3oXcV3A, were created. Some 70 participants including invited guest speakers, engineers, industry practitioners, academics and students attended the Conference. Based on completed evaluation forms on the Conference, feedback from participants was overwhelmingly good. Many participants commented that the presenters were very knowledgeable about their areas of expertise and the presentations were interactive and informative. Because of time constraints for the Conference, other contributions are compiled in the proceedings in both bound form and on e-book. We gratefully acknowledge all the guest speakers, presenters, participants and all supporting and organisations who have made this Conference possible. Special thanks go to the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and working group of the Organising Committee, particularly Dr. Cilla Pemberton and SCIE Team, for their support to the Conference.
