Although they may seem avant-garde, seahorses have looked this strange for at least 40million years. Their genus name, Hippocampus, literally means horse-like sea-monster.Dirty dancing. At the culmination of an elaborate courtship dance, the female seahorse transferseggs to the male's belly pouch, making him pregnant. While the female may have similar escapadeswith additional fathers, daddy seahorse broods the eggs for two to three weeks until they hatch.Why the long face? Seahorse populations worldwide are threatened by overcollecting for use astraditional medicines, aquarium fish, and curios.
