As John F. Kennedy famously said, “Mankind must put an end to war before war puts an end to mankind.” The deadliest wars in history are all a testament to that sentiment — it is a repeating pattern with very costly end results.

THE TROJAN WARS Perhaps some of the most famous wars in human history are the Trojan Wars, which took place in Ancient Greece. The story of the ancient city of Troy has been told for some 3,000 years. Spanning several decades, the tale is set in Greece’s mythical past. At its heart is the powerful city of Troy on the western coast of Anatolia (modern-day Turkey), besieged for 10 years by the Greeks, who sailed across the Aegean Sea to take revenge for a grave insult – the abduction of a woman. This ancient world war features a stellar cast of characters. Even the gods are involved.

THE CRUSADES There were a number of Crusades from the 11th century to the 13th century, all of which were started by the Church, as a way to obtain more power in the Middle East, and retake Jerusalem. They were the largest Christian-led holy wars in human history. What made the Crusades important, though, weren't the lives lost. It was the lasting political and social effects that the wars had. The Crusades instilled a long-lasting, bitter tension between Europe and the Middle East; the effects of which can still be felt today

THE NAPOLEONIC WARS Napoleon is one of those conquerors that was able to launch some of the most successful wars in human history and win almost all of them. A brilliant tactician, his strategies are still regularly studied by aspiring generals today. These wars changed European military systems. Cannons became lighter and moved faster. Armies were much larger, yet had better food and supplies.

THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION The American Revolution was one of the most important wars in human history. The American Revolution was a time when the British colonists in America rebelled against the rule of Great Britain. There were many battles fought and the colonies gained their freedom and became the independent country of the United States. The American Revolutionary War lasted from 1775 until 1783.

WORLD WAR I Also known as the Great War, World War I was one of the deadliest wars in human history—and one of the most important. Along with being the first war to have chemical weapons and biological weapons used, World War I was known for completely and utterly shifting the political and geographic world. The Allies — the British Empire, France, Belgium, Russia and later, the USA — were in one family. And the Central Powers of Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey were in the other.

WORLD WAR II World War II was a battle between two groups of countries – the “Allies” and the “Axis“. The major Allied Powers were Britain, France, Russia, China and the United States. The major Axis Powers were Germany, Italy and Japan. Before World War 2 began, Germany was ruled by a man named Adolf Hitler Together with the Nazi Party, he wanted Germany to rule Europe. The group most heavily targeted by the Nazis were the Jews

THE COLD WAR After World War II the United States and the Soviet Union were the superpowers of the world. They became rivals as they each sought to prevent the other from gaining too much power. The period of tension that existed between them came to be known as the Cold War. Although the conflict did not result in actual war between the two countries, it did lead to a number of smaller wars. (1945-1001)
