MESSAGE FROM THE CEOTONY PLAKAS In the early hours of June 12th, 2016, 49 people were killed and 53 others were injured inside Pulse, a gay nightclub located in Orlando, just a couple hours from Palm Beach County. By the evening of the same day, as the news of the tragedy spread across the globe, the gathering of our local community was so immediate and profound that it was as palpable as it was audible. Our instinct to come together and support one another, was reflex – like a wave of electricity running through all of us, pulling us together in an instant. As diverse as our community is, and as much as we reach to understand and accept our differences, there is no doubt that we also share a strong human connection.When we aren’t being challenged; we challenge one another.When we are challenged; we know exactly how to unite. If there is anything to be learned since that terrible night in Orlando, it’s that we are a community that protects one another.We share strong bonds, deep roots and a common desire to live in safe and welcoming spaces. The connection we share didn’t happen by accident.The backbone of our network is a result of years of investment to build a strong, integrated community. Countless hours of volunteerism, financial support from businesses and individual contributors, political capital from elected and appointed officials, and thoughtful coverage of our initiatives by our local media – over the course of three decades – established the foundation on which we’ve built one of the most welcoming and accepting communities in Florida and the nation.
