The Samaritan Honorary Editor From the Chief Editor’s Desk Lion N. Devender Reddy-Mjf Hello Lions! Chief Editor September! A month that heralds the onset of change; of seasons, Lion Dr Lakshmi of festivities, of new business. It’s a matter of great honour that the Nippani ‘Pride of Lions’: The Lions Club of Secunderabad Samaritans’ are launching the first edition of their e-Newsletter in September, aptly Associate Editors named: The Samaritan! Lion DrJayashree Nair It is said that change is scary, but do you know what can be scarier? Stopping yourself from accepting that change, shelving Lion Sankara responsibility and thinking ‘service and commitment’ only as words Venkata Krishna to be exhibited. When this happens, we stop growing, evolving, Prasad progressing. Service and commitments should be an act, not merely words. And this requires determination from the heart! Let me Chief narrate a simple story that I found on LinkedIn (Feb 2017Digamber Co-ordinator Kumar) Lion Anitha Gali The hungry cat- A beautiful story of commitment vs determination You can’t go back and A hungry cat chanced upon a healthy-looking mouse scuttling on change the the ground. The cat thanked its stars and of course god for chancing upon the prey. It started chasing the mouse. The mouse had only beginning but thought on its mind; save itself. She then found a small hole and you can start saw that she could enter into it easily while it was too small for the where you are cat. All the while this cat and mouse game was being observed by and change the a mother and child. The child questioned the mother: The cat was hungry, and definitely bigger and more powerful to catch the tiny ending mouse, but how come the mouse escaped? C. S. Lewis The mother replied: The cat was committed to catch the mouse to eat as a routine whereas the mouse was determined to survive! The cat can still survive if he fails to catch this mouse, but for the mouse, this was the last chance to survive. To capsule the story – it means that commitment is just not enough to achieve your goal. The commitment is your need and want but your determination is the real need and want. You should be determined like the mouse in the story. It is this determination that will achieve our vision- ‘Happy to Serve’, the tagline of our newsletter title, The Samaritan 1|Page

The Samaritan Membership RETENTION [Part-1]: By: Lion N Devender Reddy Mjf, District Chairperson - Retention Try not to become a person of success- try to become a person of value: Albert Einstein Retention is one of the most important aspects of Membership growth. As long as members keep leaving the Lions Clubs, the efforts to increase the membership is like trying to fill up water in a leaking vessel. It is a proven fact that our LCI global membership is not growing beyond 14 million for last several decades in spite of the best efforts put in by many International leaders. Hence, we must close the leak first. This is Retention. When does the retention activity begin? In fact, it begins even before the member is admitted. It is said - “a job well begun is half done!” & hence a “I-five” Formula is suggested hereunder. 1. Identify right type of person, who has concern for the community and willing to serve, willing in self-development and leadership 2.Inform about LCI, LCIF & the yeomen services done around the Globe. Feed the right kind of information and remove pre- conceived negative perceptions if any. Create a feeling “Lions Club membership is a matter of prestige.” 3. Invite and receive with utmost respect for a club BOD and introduce all the directors and their contribution in service and gains in personal and social and leadership development by giving him real life success stories. 4. Indoctrinate in a well-organized Indoctrination meeting. 5. Induct in an impressive ceremony either at the Installation or Charter-Nite or even at a well-attended Club meeting. Ensure each member of the club and attendees greet and pay due respect and recognition. This ensures that the member to stay longer. Once admitted, involve them right away, in activities of their interest, take suggestions and create a feeling that they are an important part of the club and much depends on them. Engage them to head service projects. Club president & Directors should create a family atmosphere of fellowship, friendship and sense of belongingness. The sponsor & member-ship chairperson should keep in constant touch & bring them along to the club and district meetings & functions and help to network among other members of different clubs. Administration, especially financial matters should be effective and transparent. Proper Communication on Club, District, Multiple and International news & upcoming programs like meetings, seminars, conferences, leadership trainings - DLLI, ELLI, RLLI, ALLI & Webinars & other learning material available in the Resource Section of Lions website. www.lionsclubs.org be passed on promptly to all members. Entertainment & education programs, Social outings should be part of Club Culture. Clubs that focus on these activities will be effective. Effective clubs will keep members active and involved. Active & involved members usually stay forever. Thus, Retention is achieved. In spite of this, members may want to leave for other reasons. These reasons will be discussed in part 2- The reasons & Remedies. 8|Page
