Smith & Munson Photographs by Hortographie Open Day at Smith & Munson British Flower Farm British tulip and lily grower Smith and Munson Ltd held an open day at their farm earlier this year, in collaboration with Sarah Richardson from Leafy Couture. The event was put together to give the opportunity to florists to see behind the scenes of a working British flower farm. Jo Munson, part of the family led Smith & Munson team said: “Well it was a first for us. It was a marvellous suggestion from our lovely friend, acclaimed floral designer Sarah Richardson, who owns Leafy Couture Florist and Flower School.” 42 guests attended the farm on what was a very cold but beautifully sunny January day. “We took everyone on a tour of the nursery to see the whole process from planting, cropping, bunching, and packing!” Explained Jo. “We served lunch in the glasshouse which is something we have never done before. We set up a long table all the way down the middle and it looked amazing decorated with our tulips amongst crystal candlesticks and vases provided by Sarah, with her creative tulip chandeliers hanging overhead,” Jo continued. A demonstration was then held by Sarah using the tulips from the farm. Sarah commented, “I wanted to show florists the amazing things you can do with British flowers, and the story that goes with them. Florists and growers travelled from all over to experience the magic of Smith & Munson. We can now understand all of the time and effort and expertise it takes to create such perfect products that we use every day.” The visitors saw the sun rise and the sun set over the tulip farm, and for some it was one of the highlights of their floristry careers so far. Sarah said: “The passion and dedication shown on the farm is overwhelming and inspiring. When you buy from Smith and Munson you are supporting British industry and a truly wonderful, hardworking family.” Find Smith & Munson tulips and lilies at your local wholesaler. www.smithandmunson.com www.leafycouture.co.uk 66 WWW.BFAFLORIST.CO.UK
