VayeishevThen they took him, and cast him into thepit; the pit was empty, no water was in it.They sat to eat food.(Bereshit 37:24,25)And if were wrong well someone will payBut its ok it’s only my brotherAnd I won’t grieve why doesn’t he just leaveIf someone must pay its okits only my brother(Only my brother)___

And they said to one another, “Look! Thatdreamer is coming! So now, come and let uskill him, and throw him into one of the pits.(Bereshit 37:19)You say pluck out his eyes, heed not hiswarning. Bring his blood stained coat to thecats as an offering.(Mause)___One of the main themes in this Parsha can be summed up in one word ‘Recognition’. ‘Ha Kerna’‘Do you recognize?’ This phrase is used in two places. The brothers do not recognize thatYoseph is a Tzadik, and in their jealousy conspire to assassinate him, and opt instead to sell him. They bring his blood stained coat to their father and Yehuda says ‘Do you recognize this?’ Thisphrase later comes back to Yehuda when in his righteous wrath he is about to burn yet anotherTzadikes Tamar who responds ‘Do you recognize these items?’ Yehuda then realizes his terriblemistakes.

Only My BrotherThey’re setting sail on the ship TitanicThey raise a toast to peace at lastAnd as the ship sails off into the blood red sunsetThey say cast off those who warn us of the pastAnd if we’re wrong someone will payBut it’s ok – It’s Only my BrotherI feel secure - It’s his own fault I’m sureIf someone must pay its ok It’s Only My BrotherThey say the devil ain’t really so evilLet’s give him a chance come on let’s make him kingAfter all good always seems to go unrewardedAnd he promises us so many thingsAnd if we’re wrong well someone must payBut it’s ok - Its Only My BrotherI’m ok for now It will work out I’m sure somehowIf it don’t it’s ok someone will payIts Only My BrotherThere are prophets who prophesizeOnly sweet thingsAnd there are fools who follow and increaseAnd while the puppets of the king performThe cities are on fireBut it’s the price the prophets say for peaceAnd if were wrong well someone will payBut its ok it’s only my brotherAnd I won’t grieve why doesn’t he just leaveIf someone must pay its ok its only my brother

Breach In Your HeartMy Father - How they hurt youYou who loved them enough - to chastiseLook how they beat you and imprisoned youYou who only wanted to save their livesMy Teacher - How they tortured youYou who loved them enough to expect more of themLook how they chained you and defamed youYou who only wanted to restore themMy King - Look how they bloodied youYou who wanted them to stop feeling sorryLook how they martyred youLook how they murdered youYou who only wanted to reveal their gloryHere is the mystery - Listen to meThe picture must develop in the darkBear this spark in your soul - until it is bornUntil it breaks through the breach - in your heartCome singers, Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen,Bob ZimmermanThis is the one to whom you owe your praiseYou who were leaders, what now do you followCan't you see these are the true protest daysMy eyes - Look how they've blinded meTook them away - Left me groping in the darkThere will never be another one like youWho picked us up and carried us throughBut I'll not lose faithI'll continue to carry the weight you boreMy Cherished One - Look how they buried youYou who only wanted to bring out their virtueLook how they felt no pain

And still they feel no shameYou who brought them life - Even as they buried youMy Anointed One - Look how they struck youHow they killed you with wordsAnd the penalty that now they've incurredLook how they ran when they saw you comeLook how they hid behind the trigger of the gunLook how even now they don't realizeJust who you were

This is the HolocaustI was tending my gardenI was plucking out the weedsWanted a basket of fruitTo take with me when I leaveNever thought I'd be wiped outBy an early winter frostYou know, I thought this was the redemption but I was wrong - this is the HolocaustI was following a road that was dangerous they saidBut I knew the L-rd would protect meAt least that's what He saidSure enough He came and then I was double-crossedI said, I thought this was the redemption He said noThis is the HolocaustI was directing the travelersWho had strayed far from homePreparing them for the KingWho soon would sit on the throneNever thought I'd have to tell themChildren I’m sorry but I’m lostI thought this was the redemption but I was wrongThis is the HolocaustBut children don't you worry - it's not the very endAfter the storm will fallWe'll rebuild our home againIt's written all hope must be lostBefore the king finally returnsThis must be the hardest lesson I believe I've ever learnedThought things would be differentThe sea would part and we would crossI really thought this was the redemption but I was wrong This is the HolocaustWell there was one who came to warn us

To prepare us for the stormBut you slandered him and saidYou wish he never had been bornWell now you'll see the tidal wave you madeInto it you'll be tossedThough you could have brought redemptionYou gave birth to the HolocaustWell it's a sin to deceive someoneBut a crime to deceive yourselfThere ain't no rosy picture nowNo one to guard your wealthThe one you thought that you could buyWell now he's going to be your bossThough you could have brought redemptionInstead you brought the HolocaustIt's written all hope must be lostBefore the king finally returnsThis must be the hardest lessonI believe I've ever learnedThought things would be differentThe sea would part and we would crossI really thought this was the redemption but I was wrongThis is the HolocaustBut children don't you worry - it's not the very endAfter the storm will fallWe'll rebuild our home again

Heart of StoneWhat master do you serveThat stains your hands with bloodHow does a child become cruelTo those that he once lovedAre you proud of your new positionAnd the dirty work you had to doOr were you just following ordersLike others used to do?Oh brother of minePlease don't break down my doorI don't want to sayThat your not my brother - anymoreWho are you afraid of?What happened to your pride?Who could have convinced youTo commit this crime? What virus has infected youAnd put shock-waves in your brainHow could the glorious heroHave no decency and shame? How does the son of glorySteal from widows already robbed? Are gangsters your new family nowIs money your only God?Are these the brave soldiersThat face danger every dayIs this the enemy that you've conqueredYour little children that you betray?

What idol made of stoneStole your heart away?Did they give you a metalTell me what price did they pay?I often wonderHow a people could complyTo place their brothers in the ovenWouldn't you rather die?

The Wisdom of Your WaysDo you desire to prepare me for the dust of deathDo you want your words to ceaseDo you not like those who are jealous for your loveWhen so many turn from you in retreatDo you have so many suitorsDid you ever have such a one as thisOne who was as beautiful in deed as appearanceOne who's arrow never missedWhat is the wisdom of your ways?Do you desire to fade awayAnd leave your children all aloneWhy did you send your shepherd just to take himWhen he was leading your flock homeWas the crystal meant to be brokenWas the perfect piece never meant to fitSome are taken in their timeSome are taken right in the midst of itWhat is the wisdom of your waysIs this what you desireTo punish those who warned of your punishmentTo steal from those who brought thieves to justiceTo satisfy the bat with the light of the sunWhat is the wisdom of your waysDo you desire to be a widowVeiled in black and hidden from sightThere was one who brought you sweet flowersAnd sang praises to you each nightWhat is the wisdom of your waysIs this what you desireTo silence the voice that sworeWe would never be silent againTo cut down the tree who stoodAgainst the wind and would not bendTo destroy the destroyer of your enemies

What is the wisdom of your waysDid your nightingale sing to sweetlyWas it not meant to be so clearWas the song she sang too simpleToo simple for them to hearDo you want to be denied againWho will stand up for your causeWe have no hands to graspWe have only clawsWhat is the wisdom of your waysIs this what you desireTo cut short the lifeOf one who gave his life over to youTo remove a rose among thornsWhen you know there are so fewTo slaughter the bull that pulled your yokeWhat is the wisdom of your

MiketzThen they said to each other, “Indeed we are guilty concerning our brother inasmuch as we sawhis heartfelt anguish when he pleaded with us and we paid no heed; that is why this anguish hascome upon us.” (Bereshit 42:21)And when the rock they all despiseBecomes the cornerstoneThe Voice of Freedom is the voice of JudgmentThe Voice of Freedom is the voice of the Law(Voice of Freedom) ___

Yoseph saw his brothers and he recognized them, but he acted like a stranger…Yoseph recalledthe dreams that he dreamed about them (Bereshit 42:7-9)And in the endAll the dreams that I dreamed will come trueBut not the way I thoughtAnd even you will see it too – In the end(In the End) ___

The Voice of FreedomThe Voice of Freedom is the voice of judgmentThe voice of Freedom is the voice of the lawDon’t say you are not guiltyDon’t say you have not strayedDon’t blame all your misfortunesOn someone else’s nameDon’t look at what you have notBut learn what you can beDon’t say you have no choicesDon’t say that you’re not freeThe Voice of Freedom is the voice of JudgmentThe Voice of Freedom is the voice of the LawAnd when the rock they all despiseBecomes the cornerstoneAnd when the children all come homeAnd the King sits on his throneAnd the truth is finally knownThe voice of Freedom is the voice of judgmentThe voice of freedom is the voice of the law. Before you blame the systemBefore you make demandsBefore you blame the devilSee the blood on your own handsDon’t say you don’t need fencesDon’t say you don’t need rulesThe voice of mother nature is the wisdom of foolsBut the voice of freedom is the voice of judgmentThe voice of freedom is the voice of the lawAnd when the rock they all despiseBecomes the corners stoneAnd when the children all come home

And the King sits on his thrownAnd the truth is finally knownThe voice of freedom is the Voice of JudgmentThe Voice of Freedom is the voice of the lawAnd those who seek correction –Blessed will they beAnd those who seek instruction will find eternityThe voice of freedom is the voice of judgmentThe voice of freedom is the voice of the law.Woo freedomDon’t blame your misfortuneOn someone else’s nameDon’t look for somebody, somebody to blameOh Freedom Is the voice of the LawGot to learn the law.

In The EndEven though I said I’ll never sing againAfter all these thing maybe its clearerEven though its dark in the places that I’ve beenMaybe now the light’s a little bit nearerAnd even though I said you’ll always be a slaveJust because you think you are the masterAfter all these things when you’ve lost everythingWhen someone cries maybe next time you’ll answerAnd in the endAll the dreams that I dreamed will come trueBut not the way I thoughtAnd even you will see it too – In the endAnd even though I said I might as well be deadHow can I replaced what has been shatteredBut after all these thingsThough we still don’t know anythingI suppose were left with what really mattersAnd even though I said all the riches in my handAre buried in the sand foreverBut after all these thingsYou recalled the song I did singAnd suddenly were singing it togetherAnd in the endAll the dreams that I dreamed will come trueBut not the way I thoughtAnd even you will see it too – In the end

Vayechi_Then Israel saw Yosephs sons and said, ‘Who are these?’(Bereshit48:8)But where they go I cannot see.I hope that they are finally free.(Words of a Song)Then Yacov called for his sons and said, Assemble yourselves and I will tell you what will befallyou in the End of Days.(Bereshit 49:1)This is the generation of one Nation under the sunMade up of many tribes joined together as one(Tribes)_

In the entire Torah scroll, Vayechi is unique in that there is no extra space between it and thepreceding Parasha. This Parasha is called a ‘closed’ Parsha. In Hebrew the word closed ‘Stuma’is similar to ‘Stima’ which means infection. But where they go I cannot see I hope that they arefinally freeThe exile closes us off and we are not healthy as we should be; our eyes don’t see properly andwe don’t take the proper lessons from events that occur. Another reason that the Parasha isclosed is that Yacov’s prophetic vision was ‘closed’. He was prevented from telling his childrenwhen the exile would end.Sometimes freedom is imprisonment and imprisonment is freedomWhen Napoleon marched through Europe and Russia to many it was considered a movement ofliberation. To the Bnei Torah world it was a curse, an illusion of freedom that would lead todestruction. One who sees a temporary opening for him to escape Hashems reality may feel liberated and freebut because he does not see the past and the future only the present there is no connection and heslips into exile without a break, without understanding what he is doing. He is like one whoreaches into a thorn bush, only when he pulls his hand out does he get cut with the thorns. Allexiles are free to enter but we pay when we leave. Many years later in Russia Jews went to prison for the crime of keeping the Torah that had beenoutlawed in Communist Russia. Those individuals were actually free, even as they sat in prisonbecause they understood the true meaning of their existence.Although the brothers were now united in the exile, Yacov understood that it was imperative tomake sure Yoseph buried him in Israel. In this way the family would not forget their past whichis their future.I chose a selection of songs that may be slightly related to some of these themes; the words of asong that we are left with, even though we may not understand it; alone again, without our lovedones; the last goodbye, building the future, brick by brick, through the many tribes of our Nation.

Words of a SongOne by One they climb the wallAnd they disappearLeave behind the factory and the things they fearBut where they go I cannot seeI hope that they are finally freeAnd as for me my friendI will not reach the endBut when I’m gone I hope that you will carry onAnd I will leave you with the words of a songOne by One the new ones come to fulfill their taskAnd they give them factory clothesAnd a faceless maskBut where they go I cannot seeI only hope that they are finally freeAnd as for me my friend I will never reach the endBut if I’m gone I hope that you will carry onAnd I will leave you with the words of a song

Alone AgainAfter all is said and doneWere alone again – all alone againThe dreams we built and burned them all downAlone again - Alone againBut darling you will find another manAnd one day we will both understandAnd now we sit up nights that seem so longAlone again - Alone againIts times like these they say that make one strongAlone again - Alone againBut one day all the wrongs will be made rightSo darling don’t you cry don’t you cry tonightAfter all is said and doneAlone again - Alone againAnd is there anyone who don’t find himselfAlone again - Alone againOne day all the wrongs will be made rightSo darling don’t you cry don’t you cry tonight

Brick By BrickCan a light - Be put outCan such a light - Be put outIs that all there is - It's not possibleSuch a lightGoing to keep your light burning - going to keep it litGoing to build your dream - brick by brickGoing to do what I can to carry onTo bring your children back to where they belongI'm going to keep your light burningTill every light is litI'm going to build your dream brick by brickI’m going to keep your light burningTill every light is litI'm going to build your dream brick by brick

The Last GoodbyeI tried to call but you weren’t at homeI left my message by your gateI tried to inform youI tried to warn youNow you see but it’s too lateIt’s too late to cryIt’s too late to turn the tideI guess this is the last goodbyeAnd it’s too late to ask whyThere’s nothing that I didn’t tryI guess this is the last goodbyeOh tried to wake youI tried to shake youBut you were like a puppet on a stringThought you were so freeThought you always would always have meBut you were wrongAnd it’s too late now that you finally see(Chorus)Why must it be that the righteous must fallBefore we can see that they were right after allAnd why must it be after such a terrible costWe finally see what we had and what we lost(Chorus)
