Book 3

IntroductionThe chapters that make up this book deal with the proximity to the Divine, as well asimpediments that prevent that proximity. It also deals with many types of ailments and formsof healing. The service and sacrifice that one reads about in the third book of the Torah ismore than it appears on the surface. The word for sacrifice in Hebrew means to ‘come closer’. When the light of the soul leavesthe body it is ‘brought closer’ and rejoined to its original light. It is not desired however forour souls to leave our bodies but rather to infuse the physical world with the hidden light thatis often obscured. Many chapters in this book deal with removing inner obstructions andopening the channels of light so that the light shines through and the physical world becomesmore spiritual. There is a place where Heaven and Earth dwell together. How is it that the soul is satisfiedwhen the body is fed? How is it that a man cannot live on bread alone? The journey beginsinternally through a never ending spiral staircase.

The Art of Healing

Vayikra“And the LORD called unto Moses, and spoke to him out of the tent of meeting, saying: Speakunto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When any man of you brings an offering....”(Vayikra 1:1,2)Please don't burn me in your fire,Or freeze me in your iceWon't you accept my Sacrifice(Sacrifice)______

SacrificeIf only I could seeBeyond this prison wallThen my sentenceWouldn't seem so bad at allAnd if only someone was a waitingFor the day that I would callI wouldn't mindI could even take the fallPlease don't burn me in your fireOr freeze me in your iceWon't you accept my SacrificeCause I feel just like a lambGetting closer to the double edged knifeWon't You accept my sacrifice. If only I could unlockThe secrets that are sealedIf I could climbThrough the window up aboveIf there's a price that I could paySo I wouldn't be so cast awayAnd if only You can send meSomeone to love

Please don't burn me in your fireOr freeze me in your iceWon't you accept my SacrificeCause I feel just like a lambAnd their ain't no, no use to fightWon't You accept my sacrifice. And if I can't stop this raging seaAnd if everything I wanted will not beSometime I wonder whyI let you roll the diceNow I got nothing left at allBut my SacrificeNow some they representSome they suffer for the causeSome they disappearJust like they never wasWell I took the high roadI never crawledNever cursed or looked to blameI just waited for youBut you never cameChorusBridge

TzavRav Nachum Kahane explains in his book “With All Your Might” :‘The first time I put on a uniform of the Jewish nation’s defense forces (the army which, in timewill be the “clenched fist” of the Mashiach) is a moment that will never pass from my memory; amoment deserving of the blessing shechiyanu. It was for me the closing of an historic circle, beginning with the soldiers of Yehoshua, who conquered the land three thousand years ago; thewarriors of King David who extended the to its Biblical borders and beyond; my fore-bearers theMaccabeen Kohanim, who led the war against the Greeks; the soldiers of Rabbi Akiva and BarKochba - all the Jewish history wrapped up in a single shirt of olive green with the initialsTzahal. At that moment I recalled the verse from Tezaveh“And you shall make holy garments for Aharon your brother, for splendor and for beauty”My uniform could not have been, by any means, described in terms of “splendor’ or “beauty”,but thousands of young Jewish men gave their lives wearing this uniform in defense of thepeople in Eretz Israel. So the uniform was and is in my eyes “holy garments”.

Everyday HeroesEveryday heroes, Everyday heroesGiving their lives every dayFor one and otherAnd who can seeWe need not fearLet five thousand fleeAnd a handful returnBut that handful equals the worldEveryday heroes, Everyday heroesEach one a king, Each one a queenOh what a people(Chorus)Can't you see the ocean open wideCrushing those who tryTo stand betweenThe King of KingsAnd the one He lovesEveryday heroes, From where do they comeFrom where do they goOh what a people(Chorus)(Bridge)

ShminiAnd Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer, and put fire inside, and laidincense upon it, and offered a strange fire before Hashem, which He had not commanded them.(Vayikra 10:1)Strange fire fueling my mindTaking me far awayI thought I was under controlNow I’m waiting for you every day(Strange Fire)

Strange FireStrange FireLeading me to a place I have never beenStrange firs feeling like freedomEnding up feeling like sinStrange fire smelling so sweetMaking me feel at homeI thought I was under controlTill I found myself all aloneAnd I’m burning, with desireFor your strange fireStrange fire drawing me backAfter putting it out each timeStrange fire making me feel like I’m livingWhen I know that I’m dyingStrange fire fueling my mindTaking me far awayI thought I was under controlNow I’m waiting for you every day(Chorus)

Ain’t it the perfect ironyThe one who knew how to set the captives freeIs captured his own enemyHere’s the last lesson if you want to be freeJust don’t be anything like meStrange fire coming in the roomI thought it was the candlelightStrange fire studying its flamesStudying it with all my mightStrange fire raising the stakesEvery time the wind will blowI thought I was under controlNow I see you everywhere I go(Chorus)

Tazria / MetzoraHe shall then sprinkle seven times upon the person being cleansed from tzara'ath, and he shallcleanse him. He shall then send away the live bird into the [open] field. (Vayikra 14:7)They say there is no darknessOnly the absence of lightEvery sickness and diseaseContains its cure(The Healing)I remember the Rabbi of the Markham Shul in Toronto, Sholem Langer, who said one Shabbatthat these Parshas allude to exile and in-gathering. Similar to the leper in our Parsha, the ‘exile’is a place of isolation. In the various exiles we have wandered we have been ostracized andpersecuted and isolated because of our different ways.As the doors of Israel opened once again and we are returning home, we are also being healedfrom the many spiritual impediments that we have been afflicted with in the exile. I for one haveseen many people who may have been outcasts or physically or emotionally ill return to Israeland be cured. There is a healing that one cannot disregard when one returns (with whatevermixed feelings) to his natural people.

The HealingThey say there is no darknessOnly the absence of lightEvery sickness and diseaseContains its cureThey say every tear that is shedBrings the rain from aboveAnd there is no fire from belowThat doesn’t make one pureOh, Heal my heartSo that I can feel againAnd heal my eyesSo that I can seeAnd heal my thoughtsSo that I will knowOh when the healing has begunAh, when the healing is doneThey say there is no gatewayThat can’t be unlockedThere’s no obstructionThat cannot be removedAnd so each day I prayAmidst these crashing wavesThat this jagged rockWill be made smooth

Oh, Heal my heartSo that I can feel againAnd heal my eyesSo that I can see the sunAnd heal my thoughtsSo that I will knowOh when the healing has begunAh, when the healing is done

Achraei Mot / KedoshimSpeak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: You shall be holy; forI the LORD your God am holy. (Vayikra 19:2)How come the highest mountain's made so lowWhat is the secret only servants knowWhat is the chain that's made from strings of pearlsWhat is the knot that's tied between two worlds - Ahh - Kedusha(Kedusha)A time is coming - declares the Lord - when the plowman shall meet the reaper. (Amos 9:13)The plowman shall meet the reaperAnd the reaper shall be revealedAnd the sufferers will come forwardAnd Zion will be their shield(Hear O Israel)The political concerns of Nadav and Avihu were about who was going to be heir to thepriesthood. Although purity and holiness and attachment to God are commendable, when therituals become the ends to the means rather than a means to an end, the rituals may be takenaway along with the body of the practitioners. When animalism and corruption lead the way, theparty will also be broken up before too long.I don’t believe Hashem is looking for angels disconnected from the physical world nor animalsthat have forgotten their higher purpose, but rather to read the signs and do what is commandedeven though it may be politically incorrect. This is faith.

KedushaWhat is the way that leads to happinessWhat is the kind of work that brings one restWhat is the house that dwells within the homeWhat is the song that can't be sung aloneAhh - KedushaHow come the highest mountain's made so lowWhat is the secret only servants knowWhat is the chain that's made from strings of pearlsWhat is the knot that's tied between two worldsAhh - KedushaAnd the knower of all mysteriesHe has given us all a keyAnd the secret is locked inside this wordAhh - Kedusha(Chorus)What is the sound your soul would like to hearWhat is the voice that whispers in your earWhat is the word that words can't even speakWhat is the hand that no man can defeatAhh - KedushaWhat is the plan that's planted in the seedWhat is concealed within a simple deedWhat is the flame from where the fire's bornWhat is the cloth that burns but isn't torn

Hear O IsraelChildren teach your fathersFathers listen to your sonsWe must turn to the beginningOtherwise the end will surely comeHear O Israel The Lord our God is OneThe plowman shall meet the reaperAnd the reaper shall be revealedAnd the sufferers will come forwardAnd Zion will be their shield(Chorus)The hunter shall become the huntedAnd the wanderer shall be redeemedAnd the truth is within the teachingAnd the righteous roadLeads to the King(Chorus)

EmorThey shall be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God; for they offer the LORD’sofferings by fire, the food of their God, and so must be holy. (Vayikra 21:6)In a changing worldI’m an unchanging manYou say that I must leaveBut this is where I always stand(Unchanging Man)The Kohanim are unique family separated from the other tribes. Their role is to serve in theTemple and to bless the Nation through their service. They maintain a higher standard ofKedusha and some things that are kosher for other Jews are forbidden to them. They have certainritual privileges due to their higher level of holiness earned from their abstinence and the workthey do for the community. To understand the Kohen is to understand the Jewish people for the Jewish people themselvesare Kohanim to the world. The chosenness of the Cohen does not create animosity among otherJews but the opposite. They seek to honor the Cohen and in turn receive a blessing. The Nationof Israel is not a democracy, but rather a unity of various tribes that work well togetherunderstanding their different roles. Music works much the same way.

Unchanging ManIn a changing worldI’m an unchanging manYou say you want me to moveBut this is where I always standIn a changing worldI’m an unchanging manYou say you want me to moveBut this is where I always standThey see the rod but do they know the smiterThey see the uprising but do they know the inciterAh is there anyone among the NationWho could lead this generationAnd bring the children home - once againThey curse their burdenBut do they see the taskmasterThey curse their problemsBut do they seek the answer(chorus)They feel the heat but do they see the sunshineThey drive so fast but can they read the road signs(chorus)They witness crimes but do they understand themThe dogs run free but is there anyone to command them(chorus)

Behar / BechochosaiAnd ye shall count to you from the morrow after the day of rest, from the day that you broughtthe sheaf of the waving; seven weeks shall there be complete;(Vayikra 23:15)First there is the barleyThen comes the wheatI counted each day - until we would meet(49 Days)And if after all of this you will not hearken to Me, but walk contrary to Me; then I will walkcontrary unto you in fury; and I also will chastise you seven times for your sins.(Vayikra 26:27-28)But he rises from the ashesWith ten arms he commandsAnd every voice that is silentIs another sword in his handsOh and they die from indifference(Indifference)

IndifferenceOh the beast is fedEvery forty yearsAnd the idiots stand up proudlyAnd they tear off their earsOh and nobody wants to knowThey say he died a long time agoBut he rises from the ashesWith ten arms he commandsAnd every voice that is silentIs another sword in his handsOh and they die from indifferenceDead from indifferenceAnd the beast is fedWith a lamb for every sinAnd the ones who only want to please himWell they’re the first to be thrown inOh and one by one they returnTo the stakes where their fathers burnedBut they die not by fireAnd they die not for breadThey don’t even know that they’re dyingBecause they’re already deadOh dead from indifference

Oh and the ones who should hate himAre the same ones who create himWith all of their lovingAnd they die for nothingOh dead from indifferenceOh the prophets say that supermanHe’s the one to blameForsaking his missionFor a night with Lois LaneOh and the train is waiting at the stationHeading for its final destinationAnd they die not for loveAnd they die not for hatredAnd they die not for loveNor for anything that is sacredNo they die for indifferenceDead from indifference

49 DaysFirst comes the barleyThen comes the wheatI counted each dayUntil we did meetWhen you approached meIt was something divineI waited 49 days to make you mineWhat’s planted in the fallBlossoms in the SpringAnd it keeps floweringMy heart's been crushed so many timesIt’s turned into windIt took me 49 days to make you mine49 days, I walked 49 waysI waited 49 days and you said you’d be mineTheir ain’t no kindnessWithout sacrificeBeauty fadesAnd glory has its priceBut the thorns of a kingMake his crown shineI waited 49 days to make you mine

The lighter I travelledThe more the river flowedAnd in the desert where there's no waterThat’s where my love for you growedYou promised you would meet meIf I could stand the test of timeWell I waited 49 daysWon’t you be mineOh and from the place that I wanderedOh to the road that’s still unsownOh though I stumble you tumble with meTogether into the great unknown(Chorus)
