Book 3
Introduction The chapters that make up this book deal with the proximity to the Divine, as well as impediments that prevent that proximity. It also deals with many types of ailments and forms of healing. The service and sacrifice that one reads about in the third book of the Torah is more than it appears on the surface. The word for sacrifice in Hebrew means to ‘come closer’. When the light of the soul leaves the body it is ‘brought closer’ and rejoined to its original light. It is not desired however for our souls to leave our bodies but rather to infuse the physical world with the hidden light that is often obscured. Many chapters in this book deal with removing inner obstructions and opening the channels of light so that the light shines through and the physical world becomes more spiritual. There is a place where Heaven and Earth dwell together. How is it that the soul is satisfied when the body is fed? How is it that a man cannot live on bread alone? The journey begins internally through a never ending spiral staircase.
The Art of Healing
Vayikra “And the LORD called unto Moses, and spoke to him out of the tent of meeting, saying: Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When any man of you brings an offering....” (Vayikra 1:1,2) Please don't burn me in your fire, Or freeze me in your ice Won't you accept my Sacrifice (Sacrifice) ______ “They do not know, they do not understand; a coating prevents their eyes from seeing and their hearts from comprehending....” (Ishayahu 44:18) This is a song for the children, Your eyes cannot be covered When you hear the painful cry of your brother Let it be your own pain Don’t be afraid of the thunder (Song for the Children)
Sacrifice If only I could see Beyond this prison wall Then my sentence Wouldn't seem so bad at all And if only someone was a waiting For the day that I would call I wouldn't mind I could even take the fall Please don't burn me in your fire Or freeze me in your ice Won't you accept my Sacrifice Cause I feel just like a lamb Getting closer to the double edged knife Won't You accept my sacrifice. If only I could unlock The secrets that are sealed If I could climb Through the window up above If there's a price that I could pay So I wouldn't be so cast away And if only You can send me Someone to love
Please don't burn me in your fire Or freeze me in your ice Won't you accept my Sacrifice Cause I feel just like a lamb And their ain't no, no use to fight Won't You accept my sacrifice. And if I can't stop this raging sea And if everything I wanted will not be Sometime I wonder why I let you roll the dice Now I got nothing left at all But my Sacrifice Now some they represent Some they suffer for the cause Some they disappear Just like they never was Well I took the high road I never crawled Never cursed or looked to blame I just waited for you But you never came Chorus Bridge
Song for the Children This is a song for the children no one can deceive you When they try to lie you can see in their eye Don't let them mislead you Though I'm not here to catch you You must walk on your own - you will not fall Come on now little children - stand tall This is a song for the children no one can bribe you With candy and all kind of sweet things That will never satisfy you Chorus This is a song for the children your eyes cannot be covered When you hear the painful cry of your brother - let it be your own pain Don't be afraid of the thunder This is a song for the children your heart is pure and faithful Don't let your soul become tarnished Give of yourself and learn to be grateful
Tzav Rav Nachum Kahane explains in his book “With All Your Might” : ‘The first time I put on a uniform of the Jewish nation’s defense forces (the army which, in time will be the “clenched fist” of the Mashiach) is a moment that will never pass from my memory; a moment deserving of the blessing shechiyanu. It was for me the closing of an historic circle, beginning with the soldiers of Yehoshua, who conquered the land three thousand years ago; the warriors of King David who extended the to its Biblical borders and beyond; my fore-bearers the Maccabeen Kohanim, who led the war against the Greeks; the soldiers of Rabbi Akiva and Bar Kochba - all the Jewish history wrapped up in a single shirt of olive green with the initials Tzahal. At that moment I recalled the verse from Tezaveh “And you shall make holy garments for Aharon your brother, for splendor and for beauty” My uniform could not have been, by any means, described in terms of “splendor’ or “beauty”, but thousands of young Jewish men gave their lives wearing this uniform in defense of the people in Eretz Israel. So the uniform was and is in my eyes “holy garments”.
Everyday Heroes Everyday heroes, Everyday heroes Giving their lives every day For one and other And who can see We need not fear Let five thousand flee And a handful return But that handful equals the world Everyday heroes, Everyday heroes Each one a king, Each one a queen Oh what a people (Chorus) Can't you see the ocean open wide Crushing those who try To stand between The King of Kings And the one He loves Everyday heroes, From where do they come From where do they go Oh what a people (Chorus) (Bridge)
Shmini And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer, and put fire inside, and laid incense upon it, and offered a strange fire before Hashem, which He had not commanded them. (Vayikra 10:1) Strange fire fueling my mind Taking me far away I thought I was under control Now I’m waiting for you every day (Strange Fire)
Strange Fire Strange Fire Leading me to a place I have never been Strange firs feeling like freedom Ending up feeling like sin Strange fire smelling so sweet Making me feel at home I thought I was under control Till I found myself all alone And I’m burning, with desire For your strange fire Strange fire drawing me back After putting it out each time Strange fire making me feel like I’m living When I know that I’m dying Strange fire fueling my mind Taking me far away I thought I was under control Now I’m waiting for you every day (Chorus)
Ain’t it the perfect irony The one who knew how to set the captives free Is captured his own enemy Here’s the last lesson if you want to be free Just don’t be anything like me Strange fire coming in the room I thought it was the candlelight Strange fire studying its flames Studying it with all my might Strange fire raising the stakes Every time the wind will blow I thought I was under control Now I see you everywhere I go (Chorus)
Tazria / Metzora He shall then sprinkle seven times upon the person being cleansed from tzara'ath, and he shall cleanse him. He shall then send away the live bird into the [open] field. (Vayikra 14:7) They say there is no darkness Only the absence of light Every sickness and disease Contains its cure (The Healing) I remember the Rabbi of the Markham Shul in Toronto, Sholem Langer, who said one Shabbat that these Parshas allude to exile and in-gathering. Similar to the leper in our Parsha, the ‘exile’ is a place of isolation. In the various exiles we have wandered we have been ostracized and persecuted and isolated because of our different ways. As the doors of Israel opened once again and we are returning home, we are also being healed from the many spiritual impediments that we have been afflicted with in the exile. I for one have seen many people who may have been outcasts or physically or emotionally ill return to Israel and be cured. There is a healing that one cannot disregard when one returns (with whatever mixed feelings) to his natural people.
The Healing They say there is no darkness Only the absence of light Every sickness and disease Contains its cure They say every tear that is shed Brings the rain from above And there is no fire from below That doesn’t make one pure Oh, Heal my heart So that I can feel again And heal my eyes So that I can see And heal my thoughts So that I will know Oh when the healing has begun Ah, when the healing is done They say there is no gateway That can’t be unlocked There’s no obstruction That cannot be removed And so each day I pray Amidst these crashing waves That this jagged rock Will be made smooth
Oh, Heal my heart So that I can feel again And heal my eyes So that I can see the sun And heal my thoughts So that I will know Oh when the healing has begun Ah, when the healing is done
Achraei Mot / Kedoshim Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: You shall be holy; for I the LORD your God am holy. (Vayikra 19:2) How come the highest mountain's made so low What is the secret only servants know What is the chain that's made from strings of pearls What is the knot that's tied between two worlds - Ahh - Kedusha (Kedusha) A time is coming - declares the Lord - when the plowman shall meet the reaper. (Amos 9:13) The plowman shall meet the reaper And the reaper shall be revealed And the sufferers will come forward And Zion will be their shield (Hear O Israel) The political concerns of Nadav and Avihu were about who was going to be heir to the priesthood. Although purity and holiness and attachment to God are commendable, when the rituals become the ends to the means rather than a means to an end, the rituals may be taken away along with the body of the practitioners. When animalism and corruption lead the way, the party will also be broken up before too long. I don’t believe Hashem is looking for angels disconnected from the physical world nor animals that have forgotten their higher purpose, but rather to read the signs and do what is commanded even though it may be politically incorrect. This is faith.
Kedusha What is the way that leads to happiness What is the kind of work that brings one rest What is the house that dwells within the home What is the song that can't be sung alone Ahh - Kedusha How come the highest mountain's made so low What is the secret only servants know What is the chain that's made from strings of pearls What is the knot that's tied between two worlds Ahh - Kedusha And the knower of all mysteries He has given us all a key And the secret is locked inside this word Ahh - Kedusha (Chorus) What is the sound your soul would like to hear What is the voice that whispers in your ear What is the word that words can't even speak What is the hand that no man can defeat Ahh - Kedusha What is the plan that's planted in the seed What is concealed within a simple deed What is the flame from where the fire's born What is the cloth that burns but isn't torn
Hear O Israel Children teach your fathers Fathers listen to your sons We must turn to the beginning Otherwise the end will surely come Hear O Israel The Lord our God is One The plowman shall meet the reaper And the reaper shall be revealed And the sufferers will come forward And Zion will be their shield (Chorus) The hunter shall become the hunted And the wanderer shall be redeemed And the truth is within the teaching And the righteous road Leads to the King (Chorus)
Emor They shall be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God; for they offer the LORD’s offerings by fire, the food of their God, and so must be holy. (Vayikra 21:6) In a changing world I’m an unchanging man You say that I must leave But this is where I always stand (Unchanging Man) The Kohanim are unique family separated from the other tribes. Their role is to serve in the Temple and to bless the Nation through their service. They maintain a higher standard of Kedusha and some things that are kosher for other Jews are forbidden to them. They have certain ritual privileges due to their higher level of holiness earned from their abstinence and the work they do for the community. To understand the Kohen is to understand the Jewish people for the Jewish people themselves are Kohanim to the world. The chosenness of the Cohen does not create animosity among other Jews but the opposite. They seek to honor the Cohen and in turn receive a blessing. The Nation of Israel is not a democracy, but rather a unity of various tribes that work well together understanding their different roles. Music works much the same way.
Unchanging Man In a changing world I’m an unchanging man You say you want me to move But this is where I always stand In a changing world I’m an unchanging man You say you want me to move But this is where I always stand They see the rod but do they know the smiter They see the uprising but do they know the inciter Ah is there anyone among the Nation Who could lead this generation And bring the children home - once again They curse their burden But do they see the taskmaster They curse their problems But do they seek the answer (chorus) They feel the heat but do they see the sunshine They drive so fast but can they read the road signs (chorus) They witness crimes but do they understand them The dogs run free but is there anyone to command them (chorus)
Behar / Bechochosai And ye shall count to you from the morrow after the day of rest, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the waving; seven weeks shall there be complete; (Vayikra 23:15) First there is the barley Then comes the wheat I counted each day - until we would meet (49 Days) And if after all of this you will not hearken to Me, but walk contrary to Me; then I will walk contrary unto you in fury; and I also will chastise you seven times for your sins. (Vayikra 26:27-28) But he rises from the ashes With ten arms he commands And every voice that is silent Is another sword in his hands Oh and they die from indifference (Indifference)
Indifference Oh the beast is fed Every forty years And the idiots stand up proudly And they tear off their ears Oh and nobody wants to know They say he died a long time ago But he rises from the ashes With ten arms he commands And every voice that is silent Is another sword in his hands Oh and they die from indifference Dead from indifference And the beast is fed With a lamb for every sin And the ones who only want to please him Well they’re the first to be thrown in Oh and one by one they return To the stakes where their fathers burned But they die not by fire And they die not for bread They don’t even know that they’re dying Because they’re already dead Oh dead from indifference
Oh and the ones who should hate him Are the same ones who create him With all of their loving And they die for nothing Oh dead from indifference Oh the prophets say that superman He’s the one to blame Forsaking his mission For a night with Lois Lane Oh and the train is waiting at the station Heading for its final destination And they die not for love And they die not for hatred And they die not for love Nor for anything that is sacred No they die for indifference Dead from indifference
49 Days First comes the barley Then comes the wheat I counted each day Until we did meet When you approached me It was something divine I waited 49 days to make you mine What’s planted in the fall Blossoms in the Spring And it keeps flowering My heart's been crushed so many times It’s turned into wind It took me 49 days to make you mine 49 days, I walked 49 ways I waited 49 days and you said you’d be mine Their ain’t no kindness Without sacrifice Beauty fades And glory has its price But the thorns of a king Make his crown shine I waited 49 days to make you mine
The lighter I travelled The more the river flowed And in the desert where there's no water That’s where my love for you growed You promised you would meet me If I could stand the test of time Well I waited 49 days Won’t you be mine Oh and from the place that I wandered Oh to the road that’s still unsown Oh though I stumble you tumble with me Together into the great unknown (Chorus)
