CELEBRATION OF LIFE Biography Dr. Ben Kodzo Agbenu “When the day of toil is done, when the race of life is run, Father, grant thy wearied one rest for evermore.” The late Doctor Ben Kodzo Agbenu known popularly as “Dr. BEN” was born on December 26th, 1938, at Hederanawo - Denu in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region. His parents were Valentine Vida Agbenu and Justine Kofiwor Anoumu - Agbenu all of blessed memory. He was the youngest of four siblings. Doctor had his pre-secondary education at the Three-Town Roman Catholic School in Denu. He gained admission into Achimota Secondary School and proceeded to the University of Ghana on a scholarship awarded by JOHN HOLT BARTHOLOMEW, to study ECONOMICS. God’s providence came to pass to ensure his destiny in life prevailed. A few months into his first year at the University of Ghana, the young student was one of 50 Ghanaian students who were awarded a foreign scholarship by the C.P. P. government of President Kwame Nkrumah to study medicine in Germany in October 1961. He studied the German language at the GOETHE INSTITUTE before entering the UNIVERSITY of KEIL where he completed his medical studies in 1967. Dr.Agbenu did this Housemanship in ACHEN, BERGHEIM, GREVONBRIOCH and CASTROP RAUXEL. At the time of his graduation, the C.P.P. government which sponsored the program was no longer in power. The young Dr. Agbenu, therefore, took his time to work and also undertake other medical courses to enhance his medical profession from 1970 to 1979. In 1968, Dr. Agbenu met a young pretty lady by the name Charity Gregorio De Souza. Their union produced four strong boys namely Samuel, Desmond, Valentine and Robert. Dr. Agbenu returned to Ghana on the 2Ist of September 1979 and worked with the RIDGE HOSPITAL in Accra. Due to political instability and economic crisis in Ghana, Dr. Agbenu moved to Lagos – Nigeria in 1982, where he worked at the MOTAYO CLINIC in Ikeja up to 1985. He was one of the Ghanaian doctors to be awarded an HONORARY DEGREE at the College of Surgeons in Sierra Leone. DR. BEN KODZO AGBENU 5

CELEBRATION OF LIFE TRIBUTE BY SIMON AGBENU BROTHER “For if we live, we live to the LORD, and if we die, we die to the LORD: therefore, whether we live or die, we are the LORD’s” - Romans 14:8 The world indeed is a stage. So soon no more childhood reminisces. The void your departure has created is heavy. Four of us were introduced on stage. One after the other, you played your part and exited leaving me stranded. Your health condition brought us closer under one roof. We became two bodies with one spirit. We recounted our glorious childhood days. How we quarreled over fish in our Okro soup to stealing Grandpa’s coconut with friends. We dramatized the monkey game you played with the watchman at the bungalow, taking his keys to manufacture an explosive device that you detonated to the applause of our friends. I cannot forget about my last transfer to Lake BOSOMTWE NKOWI (the punishment area) that you used to tease me with. I still remember how you always talked about yourself being the JUBILEE GRAND KNIGHT OF COUNCIL 10 of the Noble Order. Only visitors provided an interlude to our routine and lovely relationship. I appreciate God’s love and kindness in relieving you of the daily pain you went through in your final days. For me, I think you and I have left a good example of how brothers can live in unity, for the next generation to emulate. I bear and shall carry the cross till I close the chapter. BEN! I can only say rest in the LORD. South Volta Marshallan Ambassador, rest in the LORD till we meet in Heaven. Xede Nyuie Akpe na Mawu. 10 DR. BEN KODZO AGBENU

CELEBRATION OF LIFE ChGTririblaudtenrBdyen We are still in a state of shock and disbelief, but the reality is that you, our beloved grandpa, has responded to the blessed call to return to your Maker. Indeed, your departure has drawn us to the understanding of what Apostle Paul said in Philippians 1:21 that “ for me to live is Christ and to die is gain”. Grandpa, you left us with so much emptiness and heaviness in our hearts without saying goodbye and for this reason, we wandered in light and darkness hoping for a last glimpse of you and one last word of advice, but death has deprived us of the opportunity. That notwithstanding, we remain consoled by the firm conviction that you are resting peacefully with the Lord you served with passion. Grandpa Calm words of wisdom to lead and direct... large hands holding small ones to guide and protect. Kind words of comfort and love that shines Bright... warm golden memories that shine like a light. Watching and Caring right from the start.... our grandpa's love comes deep from his heart. DR. CELEBRATION OF LIFE HE WAS A SELF-MADE MAN, A NATURAL LEADER, PRINCIPLED, INDEPENDENT MINDED, STRONG-WILLED, HARDWORKING, GENEROUS TO A FAULT AND VERY METICULOUS. 12 DR. BEN KODZO AGBENU

CELEBRATION OF LIFE TRIBUTE BY NIECES AND NEPHEWS “AND WHEN THE CHIEF SHEPHERD SHALL APPEAR, YE SHALL RECEIVE A CROWN OF GLORY THAT FADETH NOT AWAY” - I PETER 5:4 Though we mourn, we remain comforted. You became the force that pulled nieces, nephews, and the larger family together. Your presence was a yardstick that served to measure our actions and behaviour, You epitomized hard work, responsibility, and discipline. In fact, you were inspirational to us all. Your personality at gatherings influenced our actions and behaviour. Your unwritten code of conduct kept us on a good course in life. We are grateful for your guidance and inspiration. Today we grieve because we miss you. However, we are comforted in giving thanks to God for assuaging the pain you endured on your sick bed. We are consoled by God’s assurance of giving peaceful and perfect rest to the weary, wounded and heavily laden soul. Fare thee well. DR. BEN KODZO AGBENU 13

CELEBRATION OF LIFE TRIBUTE BY DR. EDWARD ABBAH-FOLI “Say not in grief he is no more – but live in thankfulness that he was”. (Hebrew Proverb) It is very difficult or better still impossible to write an accurate account about Dr. Ben Agbenu who has been a brother rather than a friend from October 1961 till he was called to eternity on the 24th of April 2023. As one of the plans of our visionary leader, the late, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, deserving students who had qualified to study medicine were sent to Germany on Scholarship. Independent of each other, we chose to do a post-graduate course in Surgery. Having qualified as surgeons we decided to return to the native land to practice our trade. Again we were both posted to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) where we each served nearly ten years before leaving to set up private clinics, the Sape Agbo Memorial Hospital and Holy Cross Clinic and Maternity respectively. It was all joy anytime we met either in Denu or Accra to check on our how far. We both enjoyed excellent health. Ben went in to undergo surgery for a lumbar spine disorder. He recovered initially but with time he complained of difficulty to stretch the back properly as a result of the surgery, but this was not life-threatening. However, he could no longer practice as a surgeon. He thereafter spent most of his time at home. Gone are the days when we met on Friday evenings with families in the home of one of the friends in the rotational order during the days when “Best Brain” was regularly broadcast on the local television; gone are the days when we met and called ourselves “Master More “and “Kunta Kinte” etc. while sharing a meal prepared by the host in a rotational order. It was all joy until this low back pain set in leading to surgery, which, while correcting a lingering adverse condition, took away all happiness. Dr. Ben Agbenu was a man of quiet disposition, a man of few words, but in each word, one could read virtue. It is sad that he has left the fraternity soo soon. May the good memories of him hold deep in our hearts. “The day thou gavest, Lord is ended. The darkness falls at thy behest: To thee our mourning hymns ascended, Thy praise shall sanctify our rest”. (John Ellerton 1826-93) 14 DR. BEN KODZO AGBENU
