Scott SpencerVarsity Assistant Coach Scott Spencer is joining the Plymouth Girls Basketball program this season as the Varsity Assistant. Scott graduated from Armada High School in 2005 and went on to play basketball at Concordia Universi- ty of Ann Arbor. At CUAA Scott found an intense passion for the game and once he graduated, he knew he wanted to take that passion to the next level, as a coach. He began coaching at Milan High School with the freshman team in 2009, right before he moved to Central Florida in 2010. In Florida, he began teaching/coaching at Gray Mid- dle school, his success there did not go unnoticed, as the high school took a strong interest in having him on staff; he accepted the posi- tion to become the Varsity Assistant Boys Basketball coach at South Lake high school in 2013-2014; he later took the program over as the Head Coach in 2015-2017. When talking about Plymouth Basketball Coach Spencer said “I am extremely excited to be back in Michigan and to be working with the girls program here at Plymouth. I have noticed a sense of school pride and togetherness that Coach Ballard has instilled here. I am excited to work with Coach Ballard and his staff who I will definitely learn from throughout the season. Go Cats!” Coach Spencer currently resides in Canton, Michigan with his wife, Tanci Spencer (who also played college basketball), and their dog, Breezy. “Coach Spencer really knows the game of basketball, but coaching is more than that for him,” said Coach Ballard. “He’s all about connecting with players and guiding them to success on and off the court. I expect he will be quite valuable to our program with his wealth of knowledge on the game and head coaching varsity experience that he brings to the table.”Jordyn ChouinardVarsity Assistant Coach Jordyn Chouinard begins her second season as part of the Women’s Basketball staff after she graduated from Plymouth in 2016. Jordyn played basketball for four years at Plymouth earning two varsity let- ters. Jordyn was named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention during her senior season. She averaged 2.3 points per game, 2.9 rebounds per game, 1.2 steals per game, and had 19 deflections during her senior campaign. In Jordyn’s junior season, she was part of a team that won the KLAA South Championship and won 17 games. Coach Ballard said, “You always welcome back former players to the program with open arms. J is loyal and bought into the program. She is a great mentor for our young players showing them what can be accomplished when you come to practice with enthusiasm and work every day like it’s your last. The program is extremely lucky that J decided to sacrifice her time to give back to the program.” “I have a such a strong passion for the game of basketball. With that being said, I have chosen to help on the staff as an Assistant Coach. I could not picture not helping out the program. I am looking forward to helping and watching the girls become great players and even better team- mates,” said Coach Chouinard
Ricky StyesJunior Varsity & Freshman Coach Coach Styes has been coaching at Plymouth since 2003. He was an assistant football coach from 2003-2008 and has been a track coach from 2003-present, the last seven as the head girls track coach. Coach Styes went to high school at Walled Lake Western High School, lettering in football and track. He went on to play college football at Kalamazoo College, where he was a 4-year letter winner. He is mar- ried to his lovely wife Maggie, and the have two daughters, Reagan and Bridget. “Coach Styes is a tremendous hire for the program. He brings a ton of head coaching experience and invested interest in Plymouth Athlet- ics being the best. He’s a no-nonsense let’s get this done right now type of coach. He will make sure the young kids in our program learn how to work hard, let them enjoy the game, and teach them the fundamentals of the game. He will be a great resource for me as well. I look forward to having someone around that understands how to run a varsity pro- gram. Coach Styes is the ultimate We over me guy. He is selfless and always is willing to sacrifice for the betterment of our program,” said Coach Ballard. Coach Styes said, “I’m excited about being a part of the basketball staff at Plymouth. Coach Bal- lard has created an atmosphere of family, hard work, and competition that I strongly believe in. ”Kayla BridgesVarsity Assistant Kayla Bridges is entering her second year as a Varsity Assistant at Plymouth.Before joining Plymouth, Kayla Bridges was the Junior Var- sity Coach at Salem two seasons ago. Kayla graduated from Canton High School in 2011 after committing to play basketball at Wayne State University. There, she majored in kinesiology- exercise science and played 3 years under head coach, Carrie Lohr, where Wayne State won the GLIAC conference twice and made back-to-back sweet sixteen appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Coach Bridges graduated from Wayne State in 2015 began working as a rehab specialist shortly after. Her parents’ names are Denis and Linda. She has two older brothers; DL, who played basketball four years at Madonna, and Andre, who played basketball for four years at Albion College. Coach Ballard said, “Coach Bridges brings a winning pedigree to Plymouth Basketball. She has been successful wherever she’s been. She’s demanding but is also a player’s coach. She’s a ter- rific role-model for our young ladies and you can really tell how much they look up to her. Coach Bridges is a terrific asset to the program with her post-play expertise as well.” “I’m excited to help develop the players into the best they can possibly be and bring some col- lege experience to the program,” said Coach Bridges.
Ryan BallardVarsity Head Coach This is Coach Ryan Ballard’s third year at the helm for the Plymouth Girls Basketball Program. “What a great opportunity to lead a gritty group of young women. We have high-character kids who will not only be successful in basketball but life. Best is the standard at Plymouth and our program will push the kids to get better each and every day.” 2016-17: Young Talent Emerges In Ballard’s second season, the Wildcats improved their record to 9-12 and a 6-4 record in KLAA South Division play. Chantal LeDoux and Alexa Ebeling were named to the first team All-KLAA Girls Bas- ketball team. Elle McCaslin earned honorable mention. “Overall, it was a solid year for our program. We were infused with a lot of young talent that I expect will leave Plymouth better than they found it bythe time their career ends. Our kids are hungry and humble headed into next season,” said CoachBallard2015-16: Relentless ‘Cats Set ToneIn Ballard’s rookie campaign, guided the Wildcats to a 7-14 record and a 5-5 record in KLAASouth Division play. Cassidy Lewis and Hannah Badger were named to the first team All KLAAGirls Basketball team. Jordyn Chouinard earned honorable mention. “The season did not go asanticipated in the win-loss column. I loved that team no matter what the results were. We hadgreat kids who will win off the court. The kids were relentless in their pursuit of greatness andthat will pay off dividends down the road,” said Coach Ballard.Academic ExcellenceThe Wildcats have been successful in the classroom under Coach Ballard’s tutelage. The teamearned BCAM Academic All-State during the 2015-16 season. The program sent all six of theseniors to college and each student-athlete earned scholarship money through academics andathletics.Community InvolvementOff the court, The Wildcats are active in the community. Over the past couple of seasons, theteam has participated in Special Olympics, Busch’s Forgotten Harvest Milk Drives, Open DoorFood Ministry, Kelly’s Kidz Foundation and Miracle League. “Our program places a strong empha-sis on servant leadership. Our kids enjoy giving back to the community and nothing says you caremore than showing you’re willing to serve and sacrifice for someone else,” said Coach BallardWork With Boys ProgramCoach Ballard worked under the tutelage of Mike Soukup from Plymouth Boy’s Program for threeseasons (2012-2015). “I’m blessed I had the opportunity to coach and learn from one of the bestcoaches in the state, period,” said Coach Ballard. “Coach Soukup is a powerful motivator of kidsand always finds a way to put his team in position to win regardless of how much talent he has.He’s going to win a lot of games over his career, but most importantly develop young men intopositive contributors to society.”During his tenure with the boy’s program, Coach Ballard was a part of a team that won the firstKensington Conference and District Title in school history. Coach Ballard said, ” It was a seasonwe will all never forget. Brandon is currently teachingPhysical Education and Health at Annapolis High School in Dearborn Heights.Before transitioning to education he spent over ten years in corporatefitness and wellness.Coach Bekius is a former collegiate athlete, playing four years of basket-ball and one year of baseball at Concordia University, Ann Arbor. During histenure at Concordia he was a specialist in shooting the basketball. He hasa passion for working with players to educate and give them the tools to besuccessful on and off the court. After his playing career, Brandon spent twoyears as as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Concordia.
