Dining Out in Grand Riversby Gary P. WestW ith the rest of the world in my rear view mirror, a mystical breeze from a pair of beautiful lakes greeted me as I drove into Grand Rivers. As a travel writer I had been here before... several timesjust to eat at Patti’s.Make no mistake, eating in Grand Rivers starts at Pat-ti’s, but it doesn’t end there. I spent two days in this lit-tle 1.7 square mile village that 350 residents call home, and a first-time visit to Green Turtle Bay Resort set thestage for my search - looking for good food to eat.I started my first day at Dockers for breakfast. Sur-rounded by an expansive view of Green Turtle Bay’shuge marina, a lite, airy feel gave the illusion of beingoutside, even though I wasn’t. With Jimmy Buffet sing-ing in the background it made nibbling on a “Sink YourBoat” omelette all the more enjoyable. Of course Dock-er’s has waffles, pancakes and French toast, too, and isalso open for lunch. Grand Rivers Official Visitor’s Guide  |  19

Outdoors In Grand Rivers by Corey Ramsey L andlocked. That was the fate of the bluegrass state from the very beginning. At least as part of Virginia we had a coastline. The rivers lent them- selves to transportation, settlement, and economy, but for recrea- tion, we were a hard pressed sort. In the middle, mountains to the east, rivers to the north and west. Land between all of it. Then power. Electricity and the 20th century brought dam construc- tion on two rivers prominent in western Kentucky history, the Ten- nessee and the Cumberland. Kentucky Lake was born, another, Lake Barkley followed soon after. And that Land Between became para- dise. Kentucky got its coastline. 34  |  Grand Rivers Official Visitor’s Guide

Today, sailboats gracefully sway the length of the lakes,a heavenward glow beaming on sunbathers beach side.Cycles pilot rugged winding trails in the miles of wildwoodland nearby. Horseback riders trot past hikers, and campers wave to them all while relaxing by theirfire. Fishermen in john-boats and bass boats brag aboutcatches real or imagined. In the meadows, bison raiseyoung near the elk that stop for pictures. Bald Eaglesbuild a bigger nest all the while.Kentucky as she was. The lone part coastal, partwilderness base camp has remained Grand Rivers. Athrowback to a time of simply river life, now lake life, always the easy life. A tiny town fit for parking the carand walking all weekend. Restaurantsrevered around the world for PorkChops, BBQ, and goodness.
