SPORTING VALUES SPORTING VALUES Through participation in sport, everyone learns invaluable lessons that cannot be taught in a classroom; These skills are often carried through life and called upon in various settings in and out of the sporting arena. Sport at Redlands is a safe place to begin teaching and nurturing these skills. The Redlands Sporting Values reflect an age-appropriate approach for our students and coaches to apply to their sporting endeavours. Page 8 of 43

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT REPRESENTATIVE SPORT Redlands Junior School has numerous representative sporting teams for students to be a part of. Electing a representative sport is a commitment to Saturday morning fixtures with team training taking place during Wednesday sport 1.30-3.20pm. Students may only elect a representative sport on Wednesdays if they intend to play for Redlands teams on Saturdays. Representative Sport at Redlands Junior School is played in the IPSHA (Independent Primary Schools Heads of Australia) competition under the IPSHA guidelines. Redlands offers a choice of Summer and Winter Sports in Boys, Girls and Mixed teams. All students who elect to participate in Representative Sport will participate in trials and be graded into ability and/ or grade-based teams and compete against other schools over their respective season. No prior experience is required. Teams are allocated a coach for the season who will be present at Wednesday training and Saturday games. They are the first point of contact for general questions and on game day. However outside this please contact Junior Sport for further concerns and queries. Representative sport does not incur additional charges other than playing uniform which will need to be purchased or hired once sports are confirmed. This playing uniform must be worn to all Saturday morning sporting fixtures and may be worn to training sessions. The School Sports Uniform can be worn to the Wednesday sport training sessions although safety equipment must be worn. In addition to the Wednesday sport sessions, optional before school training is available to those students who have elected to play a Representative Sport that season. They are NOT compulsory; however, offer an excellent opportunity for students to enhance their skills and fitness. Page 13 of 43

(This includes Winter Sports and Girls Sports) Students are expected to attend trials to be accordingly ranked into teams. THE 3 A’S At Redlands, Representative teams are ‘fluid’, meaning teams may change week to week depending on 3 main criteria- The 3 A’s. This is proven to provide fairness across all athletes and teams with the potential of movement if fit. This approach also aids in developing key elements required on and off the field to build a well-rounded athlete. The criteria are: ABILITY -in direct comparison to other students on the team ATTENDANCE -any student who misses 2 trainings or 2 games in a season unrelated to sickness may be moved ATTITUDE -this is based on behaviour at trainings, on game day and not limited to the sporting arena COMMITMENT We as families to please consider your commitments prior to signing up for representative sport- a commitment to representative sport is a commitment to a team. MIXED/ BOYS VS GIRLS REPRESENTATIVE SPORT MIXED/BOYS SPORTS AND GIRLS SPORTS As Redlands is a co-educational school, we try to offer equal opportunities for both boys and girls to participate in sport. Being a co-educational sport, we benefit from having representative sporting teams in both the IPSHA competition for boys as well as the girls in the same pathway across multiple sport. The only difference between both competitions is that within IPSHA sports, Girls sports are 1 Term in duration as Boys sports run over 2 terms. A bonus for Redlands is that girls are welcome to play in the boy’s competition in boys sports if they would like to play sport over two terms. These teams are referred to as ‘open’ teams. Boys and Mixed Teams • Boys (Mixed) IPSHA Competitions run across two terms; Summer Term 1 & 4 and Winter Terms 2 & 3. • If you choose a Boys/ Mixed/Open Sport you must see out this commitment for the full year. • Teams from Term 1 will be the same in Term 4*- we will not conduct re-trials between these two terms. If you select Mixed Basketball in Term 1, you must play Mixed Basketball in Term 4. * there is always an opportunity for individual players to move up/down with our 3 A’s • There are approximately 10-12 rounds across the 2 Terms. Girls Teams • IPSHA Girls Competitions run termly, with different sports offered each term. 1 sport per term • Commitment for Girls sport is only one term of games. • Girls have the opportunity to select up to 4 different sports throughout the year. Girls cannot change to a Mixed sport mid-way through the season. • Therefore as a girl you could select girls only sports all year round. Or you could choose a Mixed sport so you can play two terms of that particular sport. HIGHER REPRESENTATIVE OPPORTUNITIES HICES & CIS Representative Selection At various times throughout the year, Redlands are invited to nominate Year 5 or Year 6 students to attend various sport trials in our pathways. This can include HICES (the sporting association that we belong too) and/or CIS (Combined Independent Schools) which is the next level after HICES. Nominations can also include full teams where we can send teams (for example Netball). At other times we can nominate individuals to attend these trials. The nomination process can vary, sometimes an internal trial is conducted at school for those sports that only allow for a certain number of students to be nominated, other times a paper trial is used for Swimming and or Athletics based on times from previous carnivals. Please note that only students who play that particular sport for Redlands are eligible for nomination to attend trials. For sports not offered by Redlands, students can nominate themselves for consideration for a trial by emailing the Junior Sports Department or filling in appropriate expression of interest forms. These sports require a ‘paper trial’ such as diving, golf etc. where students are invited to attend as long as they can provide the association proof that they are competent in that sport. For all our major carnivals selection is based upon results achieved in the carnival before. For example, our school swimming team that would attend the HICES Swimming Carnival would be based upon our results from our school. From there the HICES Swimming team that would attend the CIS Swimming Carnival would be based upon results from the HICES carnival. For those sports we do play but where the Representative Trials occur before the season commences (example being Football and AFL) we nominate students to attend based on the season prior. The nominations take into account their attitude, their ability and their attendance. Please note that if a student qualifies for a CIS Major Carnival (Swimming, Athletics, Cross Country) or any individual HICES/CIS Sport trials, travel to these trials are the responsibility of each family.
