STEAM Aurecon Bridge Building Competition Congratulations to Year 7 Engineering Club team members, William Andrew, Isaac Brooks, Thomas Jackson and Conor Petersen, who won the Strength Award at the Aurecon Bridge Building competition in September. They spent a month of lunchtimes designing and building their bridge and joined 55 other schools at the Art Gallery of NSW where they were quizzed by a panel of engineers regarding their bridge design and then watched as their bridge was loaded to destruction. Their 110 gram balsa wood and string bridge supported a load of 50.2kg and their efforts were rewarded by winning the Strength category. What a wonderful achievement! GLOBAL LEARNING Japanese Exchange Seven passionate Japanese students (James Reid, Anna Saunders, Caroline Bates, Lachlan Edwards, Harrison Winton, Tylor Wessels and Katherine Keller) enjoyed a two week exchange at Jutoku High School (Redlands sister school) in Kiryu City in September.   They experienced an immersion program by attending various academic classes and participating in a range of cocurricular activities and school events while in Japan. On their first day, a special whole school assembly was held for the students, and they competently and confidently delivered their individual speeches in Japanese to the school community. Year 8 Language classes delighted the audience with performances showcasing each of the five languages and a Chinese dragon dance performance entertained both students and parents. Year 7 Language students provided support for the event as waiters and waitresses for the evening and Year 10 Language students developed the hotly contested Cultural Quiz. The evening also provided the opportunity for some of the Year11 students participating in the Service Learning trip to Cambodia to assist throughout the evening and raise funds for the Cambodian charities. BALLET & DANCE Ballet and Dance Concert Over 250 dancers from Kindergarten to Year 12 delighted the audience at the annual Redlands Ballet and Dance Academy concert, held at The Concourse Chatswood in November. The first half of the concert featured the beautiful classical ballet Cinderella, which was first staged in 1898. From Cinderella’s Kitchen to the Enchanted Glade, there was an explosion of fairies dancing with and for Cinderella, including Fairy Godmother’s Fairies and the fairies of Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer, as well as those very famous mice. The Ball in the Prince’s Palace was a colourful spectacular of dance which preceded the Prince’s Journey around the World in search of the maiden of the glass slipper. The curtain came down to rapturous applause following the Celebration in the Ballroom finale. The second half of the concert was a veritable showcase of Tap, Contemporary and Jazz, as our dancers took to the stage with high energy performances. These included the Primary Jazz Office Workers dancing to Nine to Five, the Level 1 Jazz Doctors performing to Stayin’ Alive, the Level 2 Jazz Librarians’ performance of It’s Oh So Quiet, and the Level 5 Jazz Life Savers dancing to Wipe Out. A sequence of performances by our Senior Jazz students to the hits of Queen, including We are the Champions and Somebody to Love, culminated in a spectacular Finale, with all students on stage taking their final bows. 29

SERVICE Bush Fire Relief The devastating bush fires throughout the state in November brought the Redlands community together to raise funds for the Red Cross Bushfire Relief and Recovery Appeal. With a whole school mufti day and Secondary School sausage sizzle, students and staff from Preschool to Year 12 raised $6,533 to help those families affected by the bush fires. Thank you to all families for your generous contributions to those in need. Running for Mental Health In September, over 70 students, parents and staff participated in the Sydney Running Festival 10km fun. This initiative began in 2018 and was a way for students to raise awareness for mental health as well as money for Headspace, an organisation dedicated to helping young people who struggle with mental illness. It was wonderful to see so many Yr 12 students wearing so much pink and coming together as a community. 32

SERVICE Kids’ Cancer Project The whole Junior School came out to support Year 5 students Stella Cunningham, Zoe Hicks, Chloe Hitchens and Charlie Hoskin in their fundraiser for the Kids’ Cancer Project Fundraiser in September. The students have been active fundraisers for this charity in recent times and their efforts raised a total amount of $774.70 through merchandise and raffle sales. This fantastic amount will support the charity’s focus on medical research and the students have certainly raised awareness of this important cause in the Childhood Cancer Awareness of September. This was at the era when Redlands had just commenced its transformation from girls only to coeducation. Class of 1989 - 30 Year Reunion The Class of 1989 celebrated 30 wonderful years since their graduation in November. Over 40 Redlanders gathered to swap life stories, reminisce and reconnect. ALUMNI Class of 1999 - 20 Year Reunion In September, we welcomed the Class of 1999 to their 20 Year Reunion. Our Redlanders very much enjoyed reuniting in the Roseby Library and hearing from Dr Peter Lennox about the current Senior Campus development. They appreciated a tour of the School and even played ball in the Lang Gym, where they shared memories of the launch of the first Redlands Art Prize. We also welcomed former Redlands Principal Christopher Daunt Watney to this milestone event. A great time was had by all who attended! FOUNDATION Peter Lennox Scholarship The means-tested Redlands Scholarship Fund was launched in 2010 by Dr Lennox with the vision of creating life-changing opportunities for exceptionally talented young people to help them realise their full potential when a Redlands education might otherwise be out of reach. Thanks to the generosity of the Redlands community, the first scholar funded through this appeal graduated from Redlands in 2017 with Distinction and is now studying at the University of Sydney as part of the Dalyell Scholars Program. Another scholar is currently studying at Redlands. This year we invited parents, Alumni and other members of the Redlands Community to support the means-tested Peter Lennox Scholarship, named in honour of Dr Peter Lennox to commemorate his exemplary service to Redlands over the past 12 years.
