DOĞA - MATHEMATICS TEAM THEME BEES SKY AND BIOMIMICRY

WHY WE CHOOSED BEES AND HONEYCOMBS? As the nature-mathematics team, we wanted to examine closely the honeycombs, which are marvels of design, and examine the underlying mathematics and geometry from the perspective of our own team.

By making their honeycombs in hexagonal shape, bees produced the most honeycombs with the least material and kept the maximum volume of honey. In addition, bees' honeycombs were the inspiration for huge telescope mirrors and the production of high-strength panels in the aviation industry.

RESEARCH SO WHAT HAVE WE DONE? We carried out our work in 3 steps. RESEARCH Hexagonal Prism Design Hexagon Coding

LET'S SEE WHAT WE LEARNED TOGETHER...

RESEARCH ACTIVITY While doing research, we first looked for answers to the questions on the side.

 We learned that not all types of bees make honey, only honey bees make honey.  We learned that honey bees make their honeycombs in the shape of a regular hexagonal prism. In this way, the bees could build their combs with no gaps between the combs and they could produce more storage space for honey with less beeswax.  We have also seen designs inspired by honeycombs are used in areas such as aviation and maritime.

WHAT WAS THE MATHEMATICAL MYSTERY IN HONEYCOMBS? To learn this, let's first look at the properties of a regular hexagon;

The base of honeycombs in the shape of a regular hexagonal prism is in the form of a regular hexagon. And since a regular hexagon has an inner angle 120°, it can easily join without any gaps between them.

HEXAGONAL CODING ACTIVITY In this activity, we learned that coding is a sequence of commands written to a computer system or electronic circuit. And we coded by learning the commands to be given to the computer for hexagonal drawing via the code.org site.

You can see the code sequence we used to draw hexagons below. 1) First we use the move forward command to draw an edge of the hexagon. 2) To draw the other side, we type the command turn right 60°, which allows us to change our direction. When we press the run 3) We can easily draw the hexagon button, our hexagon will be using the loop command that allows drawn with the coding we us to repeat the first two operations made. 6 times.

HEXAGONAL PRISMA DESIGN ACTIVITY In this activity, we learned the properties of a regular hexagonal prism before starting the design phase.

In order to create a regular hexagonal prism;  Mathematical tools such as protractor and ruler and  Like Paper, Pen, Scissors, Glue we found that practical materials were sufficient.

We brainstormed about designs that we can make by taking inspiration from bees.

AND We made the designs of our dreams using the information we learned by taking inspiration from bees.

WE; AS A NATURE-MATHEMATICS TEAM FOR WATCHING OUR PRESENTATION THANK YOU ALL.
