Amphion

Published by Baltimore Rock Opera Society, 2016-10-27 13:11:00

Description: On the eve of a historic peace with the Persian Empire, a court musician to the Emperor Justinian finds herself torn between her patriotic duties and her newfound love for the Persian ambassador’s daughter. Amphion’s supernatural songwriting ability has swayed the people of Constantinople in wartime and won her the love of the beautiful Nasreen... but will it be enough to save her?

The show features an eight-piece live band playing a wide swath of 60’s rock ‘n roll ballads, classic hard-rock and metal, while incorporating world influences with horns and auxiliary percussion. For the first time in any BROS show the live band will be center stage: their musical artistry and fusion with the onstage actors and eight-piece rock choir is truly the heart of this epic tale.

Amphion is a brand-new retelling of the 2nd original full-length feature written and produced by the Baltimore Rock Opera Society (BROS) as a part of the 2011 BROS Double Feature.

DIRECTOR’S NOTEThis play is both a historical tragedy and a rambunctious exercise in classic rock.Amphion’s increasing conviction and attempts to wrest back control of her destiny shouldconnect with us on a personal level, while also being an example of high melodrama. Theproduction has taken this play’s historical facts very seriously, but has produced somethingfilled with anachronisms: a giant sandwich. A modern rock band sitting center stage andcracking beers. Booty shorts. It contains both comedy and drama, sappy ballads and heavymetal, hopefullness and cynicism. In other words, this show is full of contradictions thatwe’ve met head on as co-directors and has emerged from the creative process strongerfor its ability to sidestep categorization. We think this rock show contains something foreveryone, and it is best enjoyed with a cold beer in hand.“If only love ruled over empires, and the ambitions of men trembled before its power, instead of the other way around.” –Aran Keating and Matthew Casella

LIBRETTOLIBRETTO FOR THE BALTIMORE ROCK OPERA SOCIETY’S 2016 SPRING/SUMMER PRODUCTION OF AMPHIONWhen Matt and Aran approached me about musical directing Amphion I had to thinkabout it for a minute. BROS has a pretty stellar track record, not only musically butin all aspects of what they do, and I certainly didn’t want to be the first one to muckthat up. I didn’t get to experience Amphion the first time around (the first BROSshow I saw was The Electric Pharaoh) so I made a point to listen to the soundtracksof the shows I’d missed, and listened to the video recording of Amphion religiouslyfor a few weeks.Since Aran had a hand in writing the original songs he had a unique perspectiveas co-director this time around, and wanted give the show more of a world musicvibe. Rhythm is one of the best ways to identify where a style of music originates,so I made an effort to emphasize rhythm in the songs. It helps when you havea great rhythm section from the outset. There isn’t a ton of information aboutByzantine-era music, especially outside of the church, so the show truly does haveglobal influences – you’ll hear some Latin dance rhythms, Western church choir, and American R&B, just to name a few.I need to give an extra-special shout out to Lauren Aycock Anderson: I’m notmuch of a singer, but fortunately for me, she is. Her choir arrangements and vocalrehearsals were invaluable, and really bring the show up to another level. –Nick JewettWARNING!
