Description: A tragic love story set in Constantinople in the year 532 AD. This sweeping dramatic epic sets a gifted musician against a political and cultural struggle. On the eve of a historic peace with the Persian Empire, a court musician to the Emperor Justinian finds herself torn between his patriotic duties and newfound love for a powerful ambassador’s daughter. Amphion’s supernatural songwriting ability swayed the people of Constantinople in wartime and won her the love of the beautiful Nasreen. Will it be enough to save her from his fate?

Music, Lyrics, & Script by Dylan Koehler and Aran KeatingDirector: Ryan BrownMusical Director: Dylan KoehlerTechnical Producer: Aran KeatingStage Manager: Katie Stike DIRECTOR’S NOTEMartyrdom is sexy. Everyone has fantasized about the romantic novelty of dying forlove... not everyone has fantasized about escalating amputations preceding this noveldeath. This parable of gory epic sacrifice was conceived by Dylan Koehler and refined incooperation with Aran Keating. Gotta say, a guy having his body parts chopped off in thepursuit of love is pretty metal.Amphion is a tale of transformation. Love sends Amphion falling from grace in Justinian’scourt. As his physical form dwindles, Amphion climbs closer to enlightenment. This“stump-man” seraph manifests his mastery of music in the ultimate sacrifice. The first question I asked AK/DK about Amphion: “How historically accurate should thisshow be?”Their response: “When it is convenient to us.”This served well as the rationale for the numerous “inconvenient” historical omissions. To you critics out there: If you want something factual, might I suggest The HistoryChannel? ~ Ryan Brown SYNOPSISAll of the characters in Amphion (with the exception of Amphion & Nasreen) are based(very loosely) on historical figures. Justinian began his reign as Emperor of the EasternRoman ( or Byzantine) Empire in 527 AD with an ambitious goal: Renovatio Imperii, or“Restoration of the Empire.” To focus on the expansion of the South and Westernborders, Justinian wished to secure Byzantium’s Eastern borders and end The IberianWar; a conflict with the Persian Empire inherited from the previous emperor, Justin I.In addition to acting as Persian Ambassador, Borzuya was a well-respected holy man andalchemist who reported directly to the Persian Monarch known as The Shah Xusra. The signing of The Treaty of the Eternal Peace took place in 532 AD, and the resultingpeace lasted approximately 8 years. The Eunuch Narses was instrumental in Justinian’s goals of re-conquest. After his aid inthe quelling of the Nika Riots, Narses was promoted to general and enjoyed a long andsuccessful military career.

The Terrible Secret of LunastusStory and Script by Chuck Green Music by Erika PatokaDirector Chuck GreenAssistant Director Jared MarguliesProducer Aran KeatingStage Manager Lauren RemenyiAssistant Stage Manager James Turner DIRECTOR’S NOTELaser. It’s a very nice word. It’s short, but fluid, and rolls off your tongue. And eventhough the laser was invented over fifty years ago, it still makes you think about sciencefiction. It is a cultural meme that has not changed much since the 1960’s. Science fictionfollowed a similar path. Lots of changes have happened in the genre, but naming it stillcalls to mind robots with bulbous heads and antennae, slimy monsters with tentacles, rayguns and space ships. Lunastus is a valentine to the genre. Style-wise, any changes to thatprinciple would not have made sense. So, what you get is Buck Rogers, Alien, ForbiddenPlanet, Day of the Triffids, Firefly, Barbarella and Star Trek.Lunastus is a comedy. It is also, as a whole, a philosophical question. What is the Argus? What does it prove? This play is full of jokes and references, sure, but maybe the biggestjoke here is the Argus. It is, in any sense of the word, absurd. If such a thing were real, what would that mean for you?To me, there are five ways to answer this question. There are also five members of thecrew. This is not a coincidence. But in the end, if you still aren’t sure, blast it with lasers. ~Chuck Green
