He told them that they were living in a land for which they did not labor, in cities that they did not build and eating from vineyards th at they did not plant. God had been good to Israel, “Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD” (Joshua 24:14). Isn’t that incredible? After all the goodness of God, they were STILL struggling with idolatry. After the plagues of Egypt, the Red Sea, the manna in the wilderness, the crossing of the Jordan River, the victory at Jericho and the list continues, they were still serving false gods. Joshua told them that it was now time to recommit and serve the Lord. He then famously told them in verse 15 that regardless of what you do, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” We live in a day in time when our culture, country and world has jumped off the spiritual and moral cliff into idolatry. WHEN MAMA MAKES UP HER MIND With a gleam in his eye and a smirk on his face a friend gave me a book he knew I would enjoy and suggested I might even find it useful. Mama Makes Up Her Mind was written by a first grade school Teacher in southern Georgia. Her southern vernacular interested me from the start, and I did enjoy reading this National Bestseller. The author shares with her readers many unusual experiences of living with a mom who had a “made up” mind and a determined spirit: a good combination when headed in the right direction. Mothers of all species generally want the best for their children turning every stone to accomplish that goal and willing to die for their protection. While observing “Mother’s Day” recently we were reminded of men and women who became great leaders giving credit to their mothers for love, conviction, stamina, courage, and a made-up mind. Memories began to surface of my mom and the many times she exercised a made-up mind with her family. There were some absolutes, though I did not always agree and can only imagine where! would be today had I been raised without them. Respect, manners, honesty, morals, and common courtesies are usually taught by Mom or some female figure. This does not lessen Dad’s responsibility however: it does reveal the mindset of our society. Often the formative years of a child’s life is spent with a female. Moms, grandmothers, aunts and oftentimes babysitters. The results appear later when faced with life decisions, disappointments, losses and even anger. Modeling moral and ethical conduct speak volumes when developing character in those young lives in whom we touch. Developing these traits cannot be accomplished with a one- time inoculation. It takes repetition. Several scriptures encourage this teaching method. My favorite is found in the Old Testament. God who made us cannot be ignored and then expect our families to be blessed. How will the children know? Speaking morning, noon, and night with illustrations and observations is a good start. Give us more moms and dads with a made- up mind beginning at birth. Blessed are the children who have a structured life. “And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou riseth up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.” Deuteronomy 6:7-9 ■ Sis. Lois Crittenden 12
