The opinion 6 LATHE EDITORIAL It should be should. “Common sense is not so common.” It was nine editions ago when The LATHE Group of Publications decided to revamp its Journal into Sensus Communis: The LATHE Journal. Since then, it has stood with Voltaire’s famous quote while trying to uphold “responsible scholastic campus journalism”. But this time, we beg to differ. Common sense, as Cambridge dictionary defines it, is the ability to use good judgment in making decisions. Moreover, it is the basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way. To put it simply, common sense is among the major things that we need in order to survive better. The sad thing with common sense, however, is that it is not common. For if it really manifests its first word, then, life for most, if not all, would significantly improve, yet obviously, that is not the case. In the University alone, where most people come of age, one would expect that college students already have common sense as they are deemed older, thus, mostly considered more rational. However, some still do things beyond rationality then use the ‘newbie’ card as an excuse. Some have a hard time conceptualizing and performing solutions to simple problems, even if it seemed obvious. Something common to these people is definitely not their logical sense but their continuous barrage of questions for every little thing that needs to be done as if every action should be laid out to them step-by-step. Like a child, some college students still need everything to be spoonfed to them. Instructions are laid out for every task but the comprehension lies on the one doing the action. While it is not wrong to ask questions, doing so every time will do one no good especially without even finding the time to understand what is said the first time. There is also an abundant source of available resources to learn more about a topic, thus, ignorance should not be an excuse. College life is not just about training ourselves into the professionals we aspire to be. It is, as we believe, a phase of character development manifested through challenges. This development, however, will not show itself to us if we keep on depending on other people for our every decision. To accept it, one must learn how to think rationally and critically. With these stated reasons and arguments, The LATHE would like to leave each reader with a new quote to live by. Something that we all need to ponder upon whenever we’re faced with a decision. Common sense should indeed be common. The LATHE Newsletter Editorial Board The A.Y. 2019 – 2020 LATHE Harriette Joshua B. Hernandez, editor in chief; Xavier M. PANOPIO Emerging in the early years of the 20th century, Filipino comics also called komiks, is one of the integral parts of the Philippines’ literary landscape which has endured a drastic change to keep up with the demands of the new millennium. Staying true to its mandate of leading innovations to transform lives, the University will keep a steady sail on maintaining strong ties between different international academic institutions. CAPACITYThis pillar ensures the highest standard of excellence in enhancing the institution’s teaching personnel. Faculty members will be engaged in development and immersion programs as means of adopting the international standards in teaching. Hence, our graduates are expected to be globally equipped and competent young professionals. SUSTAINABILITY The University advocates to remain as the region’s most environment-friendly school through spearheading community engagement, staying responsive to adversities, and addressing emerging environmental threats. This pillar also hopes to sustain resources such as investments to secure the continuous implementation of programs and projects. “Together, we shall continue to scale greater heights of excellence and innovation and social transformation,” said University President Tirso A.
