Through Christ our Lord. MEDITATION OF THE DAY The Key To Survival The Gospel passage of today specifically speaks of the “world” and the “evil one.” The evil one, who is the devil, is real. He hates us and does all he can to mislead us and ruin our lives. He tries to fill our minds with empty promises, offers fleeting pleasure, and encourages selfish ambitions. He was a liar from the beginning and remains a liar to this day. One of the temptations that the devil threw at Jesus during His forty day fast at the beginning of His public ministry was a temptation to obtain all the world has to offer. The devil showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the Earth and said, “All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me.” First of all, this was a silly temptation given the fact that Jesus already was the Creator of all things. But, nonetheless, He allowed the devil to tempt Him with this worldly enticement. Why did He do this? Because Jesus knew we would all be tempted with the many enticements of the world. By “world” we mean many things. One thing that comes to mind, in our day and age, is the desire for worldly acceptance. This is a plague that is very subtle but affects so many, including our Church itself. With the powerful influence of the media and the global political culture, there is pressure today, more than ever, for us as Christians to simply conform to our age. We are tempted to do and believe what is popular and socially acceptable. And the “gospel” we are allowing ourselves to hear is the secular world of moral indifferentism. There is a powerful cultural tendency (a global tendency due to the Internet and media) to become people who are willing to accept anything and everything. We have lost our sense of moral integrity and truth. Thus, the words of Jesus need to be embraced more today than ever. “Your Word is Truth.” The Word of God, the Gospel, all that our Catechism teaches, all that our faith reveals is the Truth. This Truth must be our guiding light and nothing else. POINT TO PONDER: We will resist lies and evil only if we stay consecrated in the Truth. VERSE TO REMEMBER: “…….keep them from the Evil One. They do not belong to the world any more than I belong to the world. Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth.” (John 17: 16-17) QUESTION TO CONSIDER: How much influence does the secular culture have on me. Have I given into secular pressure, or the secular “gospels” of my day and age? PRAYER: Lord, I do consecrate myself to You. You are the Truth. Your Word is what I need to stay focused and to navigate through the many lies all around me. Give me strength and wisdom so that I may always remain in Your protection away from the evil one. 151

Prayer over the Offerings Sanctify graciously these gifts, O Lord, we pray, and, accepting the oblation of MEDITATION OF THE DAY Jesus Has Your Back “I’ve got your back” is a common expression these days. It is an expression of support, letting another person know that we’re with them. No matter how strong our faith, all of us occasionally need to be reminded that Jesus “has our back.” Through the hustle and bustle of modern life, and particularly when we go through trying times, it’s all too easy to forget that the Lord is with us. Today’s reading serves as a reminder. In today’s Gospel, we hear Jesus praying for his disciples following the Last Supper. Jesus had just finished speaking to the disciples at length – encouraging them to remain strong in the faith, and warning them of the trials and persecution they would face on account of him. Now he is praying to the Father, with the disciples still present and overhearing him. One can only imagine how strengthening, how inspiring, how spiritually powerful it must have been for the disciples to hear Jesus, son of God, pray these words on their behalf: that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you ... that where I am they also may be with me. Overhearing this prayer, the disciples could take strength from knowing that Jesus “had their back.” Jesus’ prayer extends beyond the disciples. He prays not only for them, but also for those who will believe in me through their word. Every Christian, including each of us, has come to believe in Christ through the words and acts of those original Apostles. Their missionary activity and preaching gained more converts and disciples, who in turn gained more converts and disciples, and so on, right up to today. This is a powerful thought as we receive Communion. The body and blood of Christ, by which Jesus promised to be with us forever, is in the form of bread and wine consecrated and distributed by a priest ordained by a bishop. He in turn was ordained by a bishop, who himself was ordained by one, all the way back to the original Apostles, who were ordained by Christ himself. Thus, we can honestly say that we don’t just believe that Jesus is with us. We know he is. POINT TO PONDER: Jesus prayed for the disciples before undergoing his trial. Likewise, he is ever-present for his faithful. 156
Abide in My Word VERSE TO REMEMBER: Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying: “I pray not only for these, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.” (John 17: 20-21) QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Do I sometimes doubt God’s faithfulness? And that he has by back? PRAYER: Lord, help me to always lift my eyes to Heaven in prayer. May I constantly turn to You and Your Father. Abide in My Word MEDITATION OF THE DAY Do You Love Me? This is such a quirky conversation, is it not? Can you imagine sitting around your kitchen table after a meal, and having this conversation with a loved one? In this day and age, it would likely include some impatient person saying, “Yes, I already told you!” to the questions, or a teenager employing the “whatever!” combined with an eye roll, in response to the commands. If it strikes us as odd, and maybe even annoying, can we glean any value from it? What, if anything, is special about this three-peat give- and-take about love, and taking care of sheep? The first thing we might consider is which is the most important in this passage: the questions, the answers or the commands? Most scholarship about this exchange asserts that the threefold asking of Peter, “Do you love me?” is to counteract his threefold denial of Christ prior to Christ’s torture and death. Whether that was the author’s intent or not, it does press home this rather amazing point: For every sin, there is an opportunity for redemption. And Christ will always offer it. Peter answers each time that he does love Christ, showing some distress at being asked a third time. In doing so, he professes not just an emotion or feeling, but a belief and a commitment – though it would be reasonable to assume he does not yet fully understand what that commitment entails. This commitment – even if not yet fully tested – is what Jesus is looking for, and so he replies in turn. Three times, Jesus gives a command to Peter in response. The wording of each command is a variation of “attend to the flock,” but they all mean the same thing: Do what is necessary to build the kingdom, including laying down your life. We know, from hindsight, that the Apostles did just that. We even see in today’s first reading from Acts how Paul, the self-proclaimed last of the disciples, demonstrated his willingness to buck religious authority and give up his freedom for his faith and love for Jesus. Aren’t we all called to the same? Our own imagined kitchen table experience of this conversation notwithstanding, how might we each best follow that command to Feed my sheep if we really and truly understood it? Perhaps that is the essence of this Scripture. The true consideration is not whether the questions, answers or commands are most important – but whether, and how, we have truly heeded the command. POINT TO PONDER: Make a choice to express your love for God in a triple way. Let it be deep, sincere and irrevocable. The Lord will receive this heartfelt act and return it to you a hundredfold. VERSE TO REMEMBER: He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.” (John 21: 17) QUESTION TO CONSIDER: How deep is my love for God and how well do I express it to Him? PRAYER: Lord, You do know that I love You. You also know how weak I am. Let me hear Your invitation to express my love for You and my desire for Your mercy. May I offer this love and desire to the fullest extent. 162

When they had examined me, the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it they wished to set me at liberty, because that is going to betray you?” When Peter there was no reason for the death penalty saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what in my case. For this reason therefore I saying spread abroad among the brethren have asked to see you and speak with you, that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus since it is because of the hope of Israel did not say to him that he was not to die, that I am bound with this chain.” And he but, “If it is my will that he remain until lived there two whole years at his own I come, what is that to you?” This is the expense, and welcomed all who came to disciple who is bearing witness to these him, preaching the kingdom of God and things, and who has written these things; teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ quite and we know that his testimony is true. openly and unhindered. Abide in My Word with former ways left behind, we may be made new in holiness of mind. Through Christ our Lord. MEDITATION OF THE DAY Encountering The Living Word Of God Himself In The Scriptures Imagine the insights that our Blessed Mother would have had about her Son. She, as His mother, would have seen and understood so many hidden moments of His life. She would have watched Him grow year after year. She would have watched Him relate and interact with others throughout His life. She would have noticed that He was preparing for His public ministry. And she would have witnessed so many hidden moments of that public ministry and countless sacred moments of His entire life. The last line in the Gospel passage of today is one we do not hear very often. But it offers some fascinating insights to reflect upon. All we know about the life of Christ is contained in the Gospels, but how could these short Gospel books ever come close to describing the totality of who Jesus is? They certainly cannot. To do that, as John says in today’s gospel, could not be contained in the whole world. That’s saying a lot. So a first insight we should take from this Scripture is that we know only a small portion of the actual life of Christ. What we know is glorious. But we should realize that there is so much more. And this realization should fill our minds with interest, longing and a desire for more. By coming to know how little we actually do know, we will hopefully be compelled to seek Christ more deeply. However, a second insight we can gain from the gospel passage is that, even though the numerous events of Christ’s life cannot be contained in countless volumes of books, we can, nonetheless, discover Jesus Himself in what is contained in the Holy Scriptures. No, we may not know every detail of His life, but we can come to meet the Person. We can come to encounter the Living Word of God Himself in the Scriptures and, in that encounter and meeting of Him, we are given all we need. POINT TO PONDER: Commit yourself to a deeper reading of the Sacred Word of God. Desire to know God. Desire to meet him every day. Desire to enter more deeply into a relationship with him. VERSE TO REMEMBER: There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written. (John. 21:25) QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER: How deeply do I know Jesus, and do I spend sufficient time reading the Scriptures and meditating on them? Do I speak to Him daily and seek to know and love Him? PRAYER: Lord, I may not know everything about Your life, but I do desire to know You. I desire to meet You every day, to love You and to know You. Help me to enter more deeply into a relationship with You. 167

MEDITATION OF THE DAY Embrace the Holy Spirit Imagine being one of the disciples on Easter Sunday. The past few days have been marked, not only by the tragic death of Jesus, but also by your own spectacular failure. After spending so much time with Jesus, watching him perform miracles and hearing him speak about God’s mercy, you deserted him in his hour of need. You couldn’t even stay awake with him as he prayed at Gethsemane! But now Jesus has risen and is standing right in front of you. Seeing him again, alive but still wounded, brings back these memories. You cringe inwardly and wait for him to upbraid you for your unbelief—again. But instead, he says the last thing you expect: Peace be with you. (John 20:19) No condemnation, no anger, not even a mild rebuke. Just pure meek-but-powerful mercy. He still loves you. He still treasures you. All he is concerned about is that you find peace. Your heart melts. Joy fills your being. You want to express your gratitude and praise, but words fail you. Then, Jesus says something else unexpected: As the Father has sent me, so I send you. (John 20:21) 178
Abide in My Word God had just sent Jesus back to you as a sign of his love and mercy. He has sent Jesus so that you can see what love looks and feels like. And now Jesus is sending you to do the same thing? How can you possibly show such love? How can you possibly be like Christ? Sensing your confusion, Jesus breathes on you: Receive the Holy Spirit. (John 20:22) Once more, your heart melts. Only this time, the feeling is more personal. The Holy Spirit is pouring God’s love and mercy into your heart. That’s how he is sending you out: forgiven, filled with his love, and equipped to share that love. POINT TO PONDER: Jesus is sending you too, just as the Father sent him. He is breathing his Spirit into you, just as he did for his disciples. Embrace your mission today on this great feast of Pentecost. Embrace the Holy Spirit. VERSE TO REMEMBER: Receive the Holy Spirit. (John 20:22) QUESTION TO CONSIDER: Just as Jesus was “sent” by the Father, he is also sending you out as a witness to a broken and fallen world. This desire to receive him through spiritual Communion is an act of love which prolongs our thanksgiving even when we are not in the Eucharistic presence of Our Lord. The wish to live constantly in his presence can be fuelled by acts of love and desire to be united with him and is a means of drawing more deeply from the life of the Holy spirit dwelling within our souls in the state of grace. The effects of a sacrament can be received by desire. Although in such a case the sacrament is not received physically ... nevertheless the actual reception of the sacrament itself brings with it fuller effect than receiving it through desire alone (St Thomas Aquinas). The writings of the saints reveal many formulae for making a spiritual Communion: AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. 183
