Volunteer times Campbell county preview page 3FROM THE Oh finally! Can you believe it? Spring is almost here! I can see the Easter liliesPUBLISHER popping up everywhere and although the unexpected and uninvited guest of old man winter dropped in for one last grumble, it didn’t seem to dampen the excitement of the earth holding in that burst of life she’s been nurturing these cold months. The beauty is all around us. I don’t do cold weather. In fact, I shrivel up into a couch potato and complain until it goes away. We here in this area are too south to be really cold, and too north to be really hot. That’s ok. We like variety. As long as we know our lakes will be buzzing, birds singing, children playing and the house windows up to let the fresh 70-degree temperatures inside soon enough. Well I hope you enjoyed our February edition of the Times as much as others seemed to. Wasn’t it wonderful to be able to pull it up and read it anywhere and send it to anyone? We had so much positive feedback we couldn’t wait to bring you March and hope you enjoy it just as much. As always we are open to your ideas and feedback so feel free to inbox us through the Volunteer Times page on Facebook or email to [email protected] Thank you Times readers for allowing us to have a local voice once again! Volunteer Times Campbell County Preview PAGE 6Norris lake cleanup The Norris Lake Project Team is looking for volunteers to help with the 8th biannual Five County Norris Lake Cleanup on Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Anderson, Campbell, Claiborne, Union and Grainger Counties. “Since 2011, volunteers from the counties surrounding Norris Lake have picked up over 154 tons of trash,” said Stephanie Wells, Director of the Anderson County Tourism Council. “We continue to conduct two cleanups each year because Norris Lake is not only a recreational destination for residents and visitors, it is an economic driver for all five counties and we need to protect its shorelines.” There will be several launch points in each of the five counties and numerous locations that volunteers can help by picking up and properly disposing of trash. The launch locations can be found online at www.norrislakeproject.com/upcoming-cleanups/ or call 865-457-4547 for location information. There will be boats available to shuttle volunteers to and from the cleanup sites that are not accessible by land and barges will be used to transfer the trash back to the shore. However, volunteers are welcome to bring their own boats. All volunteers are encouraged to wear appropriate shoes, preferably boots, bring gloves and bring a life jacket. “We conduct these cleanups to not only clean up the illegally dumped trash but to also raise public awareness,” said Julie Graham, Executive Director of the Middle East Tennessee Tourism Council. “We want to encourage boaters, campers and other users of the lake to dispose of their trash properly and eliminate the need for these cleanups.” The Norris Lake Project Team is a grassroots effort of individuals, organizations, businesses and agencies to preserve the water quality of Norris Lake, conserve the land surrounding the lake and encourage the stakeholders of the lake to do their part in keeping Norris Lake the cleanest and safest recreational asset in Anderson, Campbell, Claiborne, Grainger and Union Counties. If you are interested in volunteering, visit www.norrislakeproject.com to find a location near you, to register and get more information. Volunteers can also register the morning of the cleanup. Please note that minors must be accompanied by an adult and have a registration and release form signed by a parent. You can also call 865-457-4547 or email [email protected] for more information. The Norris Lake Project Team is a partnership with the Anderson County Tourism Council, Campbell County Chamber of Commerce, Union County Chamber of Commerce, Norris Lake Marina Association, Middle East Tennessee Tourism Council, Tennessee Valley Authority, Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Norris Dam State Park, Big Ridge State Park, Anderson County Litter Grant, Campbell County Litter Control, Highlands HOA, Norris Shores HOA and Lone Mountain HOA.

Volunteer times Campbell County Preview Page 19Pat's Place continuedDo you think you hurt Matt Housley? Well in many ways you did. If you believe for a minute he did not love CougarBasketball, then you are a world class level buffoon. You do not coach for the pittance you get as a coaching supplement, as itworks out to pennies on the hour that he spent working with those kids. He did that out of love and passion. Worse, you hurt hisfamily. His wife Jessica is one of the sweetest people you could ever meet (I guess the cat is out of the bag that I actually likeJessica, despite all the grief I have given her over the years). Volunteer Times Campbell County Preview Page 23Cougar Basketball Award Winners.By: John MuseThis season we are giving out 4 awards to these well deserving Cougar basketball stars. They are “Guard Duty” which is the best defensive player onthe team, “Post with the Most” for the person who controls the paint, “Outside Influence” for the guard on the go and finally, the Volunteer Times Playerof the Year. Guard Duty: Carter Wells The Volunteer Times presents Carter Wells with our “Guard Duty” award for the 2017-2018 season. The junior G/F was a key defensive cog in the Cougar rotation during the 2017-18 season, often matching up on the best offensive player for whatever team the Cougars were facing. Carter battled in the post and locked down the perimeter for the Cougars this year. Former Cougar head coach Matt Housley had this to say of Wells. “Carter was able to watch Landon Reece embrace his role as a primary defender throughout last season. He took the lessons that Landon taught to heart and he too embraced his role as a shutdown defensive guy for us as this past season wore on. I never would have believed Carter would win this award last summer, to be honest. Carter wasn't defending at the level he was capable of early on and he spent some time on the bench. He used that tough love to decide he wanted to be a better player and the rest of the year he embraced his team and his role, and he became a better player. He saw how important it was to play high level defense and embraced his role of guarding the other team’s best player, it even improved his offense as he became more aggressive on that end.” Congratulations to Carter, you were called upon for Guard Duty and you answered the call. Post with the Most: John Porter The Volunteer Times presents John Porter with our “Post with the Most” award for the 2017-2018 season. The Cougars super senior could play outside and inside, he was a three point threat and perhaps the Cougars top player driving the ball into the paint from the key area of the court. He was also a great passer and played the game with a high basketball I.Q. Coach Housley said this of the great Cougar senior. “John played a lot of roles in his career at CCHS. He was smaller as a younger player and really developed great footwork and ball handling skills. But he kept growing over the years and never lost those attributes. He played a whole lot on the perimeter his first three years on offense and this year he really developed his post game. He knew what it takes to get the ball into the post from the outside and that helped him learn to seal off his man and make the entry into the post easier for his guards. He demanded a double team due to his scoring ability there and that allowed him to make great passes back out to open teammates. He was a tough match up for opposing teams as they had to choose to put their best post on either he or Elijah. If they picked Elijah John could take them outside and beat them off the dribble. He really helped his team during his career at CCHS.” Congratulations John, you are the Post with the Most. Outside Influence: Evan Jackson The Volunteer Times presents Evan Jackson with our “Outside Influence” award for the 2017-2018 season. Evan was a sharp shooting senior star for the Cougars during his time on the Hill. Even joined the 1000 point club during his senior season and set the record for 3 pointers made in a game during this campaign. His ability to pull up from anywhere and drain three points greatly influenced the defense of Cougar opponents and freed up space on the inside for his post playing teammates. He is a 3 year All-District player. Coach Housley had this to say of Jackson. “Evan was a shooter when he arrived at CCHS. He is just one of those guys who can step into the gym and drain long range shots. In his career at CCHS he expanded his game each season and that's what made him so good. He learned defensive positioning and led the team in charges taken as a sophomore. His junior year he was the best screener on the team, that helped spring his teammates for shots or if the defense hedged, he was there to drain a 3. His senior year he got so much better at the mid- range game and driving the ball to the basket. The best compliment Evan could have gotten as a player was that opposing coaches always chose to face guard him to try and take him completely out of the game. This altered their entire game plan just to deal with Evan. Evan showed up every day and he worked hard. He won awards and honors and that never changed how he approached practice. He is a great and selfless young man I was fortunate to coach.” Congratulations Evan, your Outside Influence helped shape CCHS the last 4 seasons.

Volunteer times Campbell county preview page 24Cougar Player of the Year: Elijah PhillipsThe Volunteer Times presents Elijah Phillips with our “Player of the Year”award for the 2017-2018 season. Elijah is a senior star on the court, thegridiron and everywhere he's picked to apply himself during his career. The University of the Cumberlands football signee has been the steadyingpresence in the middle for the Cougars for the past few years. Broadshouldered but a little shorter than many centers in the district, Elijah hasnever backed down and his opponents always felt it when they werebattling him for rebounds, trying to score in the paint or trying to stop himfrom getting position in the post. Former Cougar Coach Housley spokehighly of the young man and player he was able to coach. “We knew Elijahwas a good player for us, but even we coaches didn't realize how much he'dbeen doing until we had to play the first few games of the year without him.He did all the “basketball things” that a team needs in order to compete. Hejust has all the intangibles you look for in your team leader. His presence onthe court lifted the other 4 guys out there with him. He single-handedlychanged my mind on the mid-range jumper. Statistically it's the worst shotin high school basketball, but he was automatic from 12-16 feet. He hit thatshot so often it pulled the biggest guy on the opposing team out of the paintand allowed everyone else a chance to drive or crash the offensive glass.Elijah was so tough out there. He was the first guy to dive onto the floor forso many loose balls. He was willing to give up his body for his team. Whena team sees it's senior captain doing that, they follow his example. You'dwatch him battle in the post at times against 2 or 3 guys, and they wouldoften be taller than he was but they wouldn't be tougher and he'd comeaway with the ball. He had big offensive games where he scored around 30points. He had big defensive games where he'd shut down an opposing bigor out rebound them. His diversity, toughness, and leadership made him asvaluable to his team as any guy at any school in East Tennessee.”Congratulations Elijah, you are a great example of an athlete and youngman, you are The Volunteer Times Player of the Year. Lady cougar award winners by john museThis season we are giving out 4 awards to these well deserving Lady Cougar basketball stars. They are “Guard Duty” which is the bestdefensive player on the team, “Post with the Most” for the person who controls the paint, “Outside Influence” for the guard on the go andfinally, the Volunteer Times Player of the Year. So without further ado... Guard Duty: Haley Comer The Volunteer Times presents Haley Comer with our “Guard Duty” award for the 2017-2018 season. The tall junior forward often drew the best of the best across the district and just as often made their night much tougher than normal. When speaking to head Lady Cougar Brad Honeycutt, he had this to say of Comer's defensive prowess. “She takes so much pride in her defense. Everyone loves to play offense but not as many want to work that hard on the other end. Comer definitely does that for us. She always hustles, she's physical and she takes great pride in taking on the best player on the other team. She shut down some division 1 players this year for us. She guards people bigger than her and doesn't back down and she guards people smaller than her and is fast enough to match up. Her value in practice and on the court can't be overstated as it relates to our ultimate success.” Congratulations Haley Comer, for always being on Guard Duty.Post with the Most: Madison BradyThe Volunteer Times presents Madison Brady with our “Post withthe Most” award for the 2017-2018 season. The Lady Cougarssensational sophomore center battled across the district leavingdisparaged foes in her wake. Her post game was surprisingly goodas a freshman and she got even better down low as a sophomore.Coach Honeycutt noted her improvement and spoke on whatmakes Madison a special post. “She really just works very hard. When you're a post you have to be very active and Madison isthat, she is constantly battling for position and she's really learneda lot over the past year. She is relentless out there. She plays asuper physical game, and she's a kid that gets fouled on almostevery play. Many go uncalled and she's very good at keeping hercool in those situations and just going back to work next play. She's also a great free throw shooter. That makes her nearlyimpossible to stop. You can't foul her to stop her like you canmany bigs.” Congratulations Madison, you are the Post with theMost.

Volunteer Times Campbell County Preview Page 25 Outside Influence: Emily Ellison The Volunteer Times presents Emily Ellison with our “Outside Influence” award for the 2017-2018 season. Emily is a determined and dynamic sophomore guard. When you watch her play, the word “fearless” comes to mind. She isn't afraid to take the big shot or make a drive to the basket among the big post players. Coach Honeycutt knows he has a special player in his guard “Emily just has that high basketball I.Q. It shows up in games, she leads the team in charges taken for instance. It seems like she always makes the right pass or the right cut. She's able to use either her left or right hand and that helps her make plays that maybe some other kids couldn't. She's good at shooting the mid-range jumper and she led our team in made 3 pointers this season and was second to Haley Comer in 3-point percentage. She plays a lot of minutes for us at the guard spot and we need them all.” Congratulations Emily, you definitely have Outside Influence. Player of the Year: Skylar Boshears The Volunteer Times presents Skylar Boshears with our “Player of the Year” award for the 2017-2018 season. Skylar is a junior and she's already arguably the best Lady Cougar to ever wear the jersey. She has the size of a post player and the ball handling and shooting capability of a guard. She is the Lady Cougars press breaker, she is the shot taker, and she is the run maker. You will find sections of almost every game she plays where she simply dominates. Her jumper is silky smooth and she can create the shot on her own. She can get to the basket, use the glass and has next level ability to rise over people and sink shots. She transforms the Lady Cougars from a very good team to a District Champion level team. Coach Honeycutt sees the impact of Boshears on his program. “Skylar is so impacting on the game we play and on our team's success. When she's scoring big, we are usually playing very well but you can't always just look at that to see all she is doing. Her passing ability is very high level and she draws so much attention, that ability is key for our team. I can play her at point guard and know she's not going to turn the ball over. It's like it's stuck to her hand sometimes. She's too big for guards to handle, she's too fast for posts. She creates space for herself and for her teammates. Not only can she scored, she's improved so much on defense the past couple of years. She's a great post defender now, even when she's matched up with people bigger than her. She is one of only 3 or 4 division 1 players to ever play at Campbell County. If you didn't catch her this year, make sure you catch her next season.” Congratulations Skylar, you are the best of the best and The Volunteer Times Player of the Year. Failure I can live with. Not trying is what I can’t handle. --Sanya Richards-Ross

Volunteer Times Campbell County Preview Page 42 Jeremy’z Journey How many people stand between you and God By Jeremy Z. Young There are those among us who let other people stand between us (as individuals) and the one true and Living God. I don’t know if it’s intentional on our part, but it is definitely intentional on Satan’s part. By giving in to petty arguments or disagreements among us humans, we allow Satan, to tear down our personal relationship with God. How is your relationship with God? How close are you to Christ in your everyday life? “I believe in God, but I ain’t gonna sit down there with that bunch a’ hypocrites,” is one comment uttered a lot when you ask someone to come to church. “Me and Jesus are gonna have a long talk whenever I get there,” or, “Ole St. Peter and me’s gonna work that out.” In the first order, by definition, a Christian would be a hypocrite if they told you that they do not sin or uphold a lifestyle that elevates them above the rest of us God-created mortals. I know, I know: Watch out toes, I’m a steppin’. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God,” is a popular Bible verse – Romans 3:23. The Bible also says in 1 John 1:8, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” Verse 10 reads, “If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” The Bible does not say that when Jesus saves us that we will never sin again. It does not say that we will face no consequences for past or future sin we commit. It does say that he forgives us of our sins. Romans 3:24-26 reads, “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God: To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” 1 John 1:9 is probably my favorite verse that sums all of that up,” If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” We are all sinners, every single one of us. There is none of us who hasn’t and doesn’t do wrong things. If someone says they don’t, they are a liar and The Bible is clear on that. Anyone who says they are a Christian and turns around and says they have not sinned… that is a hypocrite. I’ve heard it said many times, and it is true: We are sinners, saved by grace. Does that make us “better” than anyone else? NO! It simply means that He who offered us grace and forgiveness is better than anything else we could ever hope for. We should be working alongside our friends and neighbors, showing each other the love, and grace, and mercy that Jesus Christ has shown each of us. We should have such great relations with God, and each other, that those who don’t know Christ’s love and mercy see it in us, and most importantly, they want it for themselves.Being a true follower of Christ doesn’t mean driving like the A young man once came to church with me upon repeatedIndy 500 between church and Shoney’s once a week.
