4 Around Our Temple Happy Anniversary The opportunities are endless for you to create AnSnepivteemrsbaerires a meaningful Tashlich experience that resonates Sam Dubrinsky & Jamil Clayton with your Judaism. Charlie & Cheryl Collat Jr. Here’s an Idea! Scott & Judith Denson In Hebrew, Tashlich means “casting off,” a phrase we hear a great deal around Rena Cohen & Michael Getman Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur — you know, as in “casting off your sins.” In the Sam & Denise Goldstein Jewish tradition, we act out this phrase somewhat literally. Because sins aren’t tangible, though, we use small pieces of bread or other food to represent our Lucien & Jeanne Hagedorn sins. In this Rosh Hashanah afternoon ceremony known as Tashlich, we cast that Ken & Ilene Johnson sin-laden bread into a body of flowing water, like an ocean, river or stream, to be carried away with the current. With each item we cast into the water, we remember Erik Lizee & Michele Forman and name, aloud or to ourselves, an aspect of our behavior we want to “cast away.” Bobbi & James May Bob & Anita May The practice was inspired by the Prophet Micah 7:19, which reads, Allan & Joan Morris “God will take us back in love. God will cover up our iniquities. God will hurl Karli & Max Morris all our sins into the depths of the sea.” Aaron & Elisa Nelson Give your Tashlich experience a social justice twist by participating in our David & Christy Nelson Temple Emanu-El Food Drive (see below). We want each family to participate in Greg & Jamie Odrezin this most important and, this year in particular, tremendous need for food for others. Marshall & Susan Rathmell David & Ina Russakoff MAKE 5781 YOUR NEW YEAR OF GIVING Adam Sigman & Anna Erdreich Marty & Kate Solomon There are so many people who are in need of help especially through this Matthew Swerdlin & Zoey Glick unparalleled time. According to FRAC (Food Research & Action Center) ‘there has been an unprecedented risein unemployment and food insecurity’ due to the coronavirus pandemic. Alabama is listed in the group of states having the ‘highest food insecurity rates in the US.’ Please consider donating food to the many in need of our help. We will be accepting non-perishable food items from September 18th through October 2nd. Please make sure the items are within the date of expiration. Suggestions are: canned fruits and vegetables, individual servings of fruit, peanut butter, jelly, pouches of pasta, bags or boxes of pasta and rice etc. Please do not donate the huge bags of rice. Try to donate plastic rather than glass as it weighs less and broken glass can be dangerous. You may deliver the food any time Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM via the alley entrance. A Temple volunteer or employee can help unload and take the food inside for you. Thank you in advance for your donations!! 10-DAY CAMPAIGN Our 10 - day campaign raises money for Collat Jewish Family Services, Greater Birmingham Ministries and Family Promise from Erev Rosh Hashana through Yom Kippur. It provides these agencies with funds to assist their clients in the many needs they have. We have always been very generous in this campaign and the Tikkun Olam Committee is very grateful that we can help provide for our Jewish and non-Jewish neighbors. Our committee hopes you will help us make this the best year yet! L’Shana Tova Checks may be made out to Temple Emanu-El with 10-Day Campaign in the note or you may donate on our website, ourtemple.org.
